In the context of engineering education, to improve the practical engineering skills of engineering students, the teaching ideas and implementation methods of the curriculum are designed based on Outcome-based Education. A blended teaching approach was used to design the implementation process to achieve the curriculum objectives. In this paper, we explain the process of blended teaching from the two aspects of basic knowledge and competency training. Active learning of basic knowledge is implemented based on a three-step blended teaching model before, after, and during classes. It adopts the project-driven learning approach of the flipped classroom model and cultivates students' ability to solve complex engineering problems through collaborative group and intra-group mutual assessment. Based on the original objective assessment of the curriculum and under the current teaching model, we design a diversified evaluation approach to comprehensively assess the effectiveness of student competence achievement. Practice has shown that project-based inquiry-based teaching methods based on the flipped classroom model can promote learning outcomes for students and increase their interest in learning. It avoids the blind and aimless theoretical learning process of the student and improves the practical ability of the student. The methods and means of instruction of teachers have been further extended, and the ability of students to learn independently has been improved.

Engineering drawing is a compulsory technical foundation course for mechanical majors. Its main task is to cultivate students' ability to draw and read engineering drawings. The content of this course is complicated and abstract and not easy to understand, which makes it difficult for students to learn. Mind mapping is a visual thinking tool to systematize and organize abstract and complicated knowledge. Taking the application of mind mapping to various teaching processes of engineering drawing course, such as the construction of framework, the sorting out of fragmented knowledge, the solution of drawing geometry and sectional view, and the group project for important and difficult content as examples, we illustrate the importance of mind map in cultivating students' knowledge generalization ability, independent learning ability, enhancing students' logical thinking, creative thinking, divergent thinking, and stimulating students' interest in learning.

In recent years, with the continuous development of China's hydropower projects, Pelton turbines are gradually being valued, and the focus of development has shifted from plain areas to plateau areas. Environmental impacts such as high altitude, water temperature, and high sediment content in the plateau area have caused serious interference to equipment that originally worked in a stable environment, for example, the failure of the cooperation between the parts of the turbine and the mutual seizure, the increased wear of the nozzle needle, the decrease of the flow rate and the water outlet speed of the nozzle, and the decrease of the air pressure in the plateau environment lead to the change of the flow state of the nozzle. In view of the above problems, this paper puts forward the design scheme of impulse turbine test-bed, using the method of changing specific speed to determine the basic parameters of impulse turbine unit, so as to eliminate the influence of plateau environment on the normal operation of turbine, obtain the efficiency condition of model experiment under low ambient pressure, and improve the operation efficiency and reliability of turbine unit. © 2024 Institute of Physics Publishing. As mobile technology evolves from 5G to 6G, the demand for third-generation semiconductors such as SiC with higher power and frequency capabilities is increasing. Silicon Carbide power modules generate significant heat during operation, requiring large-area nano-silver sintering technology to improve module performance and reliability. However, in large-area sintering processes, low exhaust efficiency of solder paste by-products and uneven sintering pressure of the nano-silver paste result in poor sintering quality of the silver layer. This study aims to improve the sintering quality of interconnected silver layers by optimizing the sintering pressure distribution and adding rubber spacers to the sintering structure. ABAQUS was used to quantitatively analyze the effects of pressure methods and gasket material, diameter, and thickness on the stress distribution in the silver layer. Finally, based on the simulation results, an optimized sintering structure was proposed to unify the pressure and reduce the stress concentration in the silver layer, and verified experimentally by sintering tests. Compared with the traditional sintering structure, the application of a 2 mm thick fluoro rubber gasket with the same surface area as the silver layer in the optimized structure reduced the porosity to 2.15% and achieved a more dense sintered silver layer. © 2024 SPIE.

Investigation of the Conjugate Heat Transfer and Flow Field for a Flat Plate with Combined Film and Impingement Cooling

Film cooling combined with internal impingement cooling is one of the most effective technologies to protect the gas turbine vanes and blades from the hot gas. In this study, conjugate heat transfer CFD study was undertaken for a flat plate with combined film cooling and impingement cooling. An experiment on conjugate heat transfer of a flat plate with combined film and impingement cooling was performed to validate the code. Then the effects of several parameters including Biot number, blowing ratio, film hole shape and impingement hole diameter on the overall cooling effectiveness were numerically studied. The results show that for a specific combined cooling scheme and a given blowing ratio, the coolant potential can be reasonably allocated to the internal and the external cooling to achieve the overall cooling effectiveness. As the blowing ratio increases, the overall cooling effectiveness trends to reach a maximum value. For different film hole geometrical, the maximum values of the overall cooling effectiveness at high blowing ratio approximate to the same value. At a given mass flow rate of coolant, the increase of the impingement hole diameter leads to the reduction of the overall cooling effectiveness.

Additive manufacturing (AM) has been continuously developed for more than 30 years. Different novel AM techniques, including electric-assisted, magnetic-assisted, robot-assisted, and UAV-assisted AM technologies have been created with various objectives. In this paper, we propose a new strategy for fabricating complex and/or multifunctional components of low-melting-point alloys (LMPA) using extrusion additive manufacturing (EAM). The main idea is using two nozzles in EAM, one for extruding polymers (e.g., PLA, PVA) while another for extruding LMPA. By using the proposed EAM system, there are three novel aspects of this study. First, the proposed system can achieve composite parts (polymer & LMPA) fabrication with improved mechanical properties. Second, the proposed system can be used to fabricate 3D products with LMPA wire inside acting as electrical wire. This achieves electrical wire inside a product without assembly, unlike conventional method which needs further step to insert the wires. Third, complex pure LMPA parts can be fabricated by dissolving the polymer after manufacturing, achieving complex LMPA parts fabrication using EAM (a low-cost AM technique, compared with traditional metal AM). © 2023 Computers and Industrial Engineering. Multi-sensor fusion for 3D object detection is a crucial development in autonomous vehicle technology. Current research primarily explores the combination of monocular cameras with LiDARs. However, there is a notable gap in the integration of stereo cameras with LiDARs. A significant drawback of the fusion between monocular cameras and LiDARs is its vulnerability to sensor failures, which can completely disable the system. This paper presents a novel end-to-end framework called SLBEVFusion, which leverages the effective combination of stereo cameras and LiDARs for 3D object detection. The framework utilizes the rich semantic and depth data from stereo images along with spatial data from LiDAR point clouds to improve detection accuracy. Moreover, it addresses sensor failures by isolating the data streams of each sensor and implementing straightforward feature fusion in Bird's Eye View (BEV) space. Comprehensive testing on the challenging KITTI dataset demonstrates that our approach significantly enhances performance in 3D object detection by merging stereo cameras with LiDARs. © 2024, The Authors. Reinforcement learning (RL) has gained wide attention, but its implementation in autonomous vehicles is still limited by insufficient sample efficiency and heavy training costs. The training efficiency of RL agents is influenced by the dimension of the state space, which can be partitioned to reduce the complexity of sampling and computation. This study proposes a hierarchical clustering-based state grouping reinforcement learning (HCSG-RL) method for the switching decision of autonomous vehicles. First, we partition the base state space into groups and generate a hierarchical tree of state space groups. Then, we train multiple sub-agents for each node in the hierarchical tree. Finally, we add these trained-well sub-model into master policy. This method allows us to fully explore all state spaces and improve the training efficiency of individual agents, which handles the 'long-tail' issue and the curse of dimensionality issue. We conduct experiments in a simulation environment and results show that the proposed method has 16-72% reward improvement compared to the tree model in different road length. © 2023 IEEE.

In this paper, a synchronous heat sink assisted laser welding method is first used to weld SUS301L stainless steel with 0.6mm thickness through an independently designed experimental platform, and the dynamic characteristics of molten pool in heat sink + laser welding (Heat sink + LW) together with those in the process of laser welding (LW) are observed by a high-speed camera. Different image processing steps are applied to extract the longitudinal characteristic length of weld pool and the dynamic characteristics of plume on the upper surface of keyhole. Then, the effect of heat sink parameters on the characteristic length of molten pool is studied. In addition, based on the experimental observation, a simulation model of Heat sink + LW is established. The simulation results illustrate that heat sink will form a rapid cooling zone at the tail of weld pool, which leads to the disappearance of weld comet characteristics, and improves the temperature field at the tail of weld pool. With the increase of heat sink strength, the weld temperature gradient decreases. When the heat sink is 200ml and the distance is 5mm, the temperature gradient decreases by 305 [[EQUATION]] . Meanwhile, the relationship between grain refinement and cooling rate shows that heat sink also helps to refine the microstructure of the fusion zone and promote the transformation from columnar dendrite to equiaxed dendrite. Furthermore, the heat sink increases the constitutional supercooling (CS) during solidification by reducing the temperature gradient of the melt pool, and subsequently creates an environment conducive to particle nucleation, growth and survival. This new understanding provides an opportunity to make better use of heat sink to control grain structure, and in turn to improve the mechanical properties of the welds, which is also verified by the test results of the properties of the welds.
