Forest carbon sinks, a critical component of the global carbon cycle, constitute nearly half of the total terrestrial carbon pool. This study employed correlation analysis and factor effect analysis to quantify the influences of various factors on the volume of Chinese fir stands. A novel modeling framework was developed using the stacking ensemble learning and LSTM (LongShort-TermMemory) models. This framework incorporated diverse base learners, including XGBoost, Adaboost, KNN, and DT, which are intelligently ensemble via GBDT as a meta learner. The model was further optimized by comparing activation functions and optimizers, with ReLU selected as the activation function and Adam as the optimizer. Model accuracy was evaluated using RMSE, MAE, and R2 metrics, significantly enhancing its learning ability and generalization performance. The findings are as follows: (1) Stand stocking showed strong positive correlations with depression, age group, average diameter at breast height (ADBH), average tree height (ATH), slope, and elevation. Conversely, it exhibited significant negative correlations with origin, stand density, and slope position. In investigating Chinese fir growth on slopes, no significant growth differences were observed between downslopes and midslopes;however, both differed significantly from upper slopes. (2) The stacking ensemble learning method constructed here surpassed all existing single models in terms of estimation and assessment indices, demonstrating superior comprehensive performance. (3) Among the LSTM models, Adam-LSTM performed the best (R2=0.844), followed by Sigmoid-LSTM (R2=0.656), while the RMSprop-LSTM model performed the worst (R2=0.618). Combined with artificial intelligence methods, our optimized carbon stock estimation model can help to improve the ability of forest land management and provide a theoretical basis for the scientific management of forest areas. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

Clustering traditionally aims to reveal a natural grouping structure within unlabeled data. However, this structure may not always align with users’ preferences. In this paper, we propose a personalized clustering method that explicitly performs targeted representation learning by interacting with users via modicum task information (e.g., must-link or cannot-link pairs) to guide the clustering direction. We query users with the most informative pairs, i.e., those pairs most hard to cluster and those most easy to miscluster, to facilitate the representation learning in terms of the clustering preference. Moreover, by exploiting attention mechanism, the targeted representation is learned and augmented. By leveraging the targeted representation and constrained contrastive loss as well, personalized clustering is obtained. Theoretically, we verify that the risk of personalized clustering is tightly bounded, guaranteeing that active queries to users do mitigate the clustering risk. Experimentally, extensive results show that our method performs well across different clustering tasks and datasets, even when only a limited number of queries are available. Large-scale pre-trained models such as GPT and BERT have demonstrated remarkable performance in information extraction tasks. However, their black-box nature poses challenges for reliability and interpretability. In contrast, rule- based extraction methods have better interpretability, but typically require domain experts to manually establish rules, limiting their generalization ability. In industry, there is often a demand for reliable knowledge extraction to reduce the time spent on manual verification of each piece of knowledge. In this paper, we explore the idea of combining GPT and symbolic-based methods to automatically discover reliable extraction patterns in text with a particular writing style. This method leverages the characteristics of high information density and similar writing patterns in text with a specific writing style to generate verifiable and reliable patterns. We conduct experiments on two datasets with a specific writing style to demonstrate its effectiveness, validating the idea of combining large models for reliable information extraction pattern discovery in the tested datasets.

As a data-driven science, machine learning requires vast amounts of training data and computational resources. However, for highly privacy-sensitive data, it is crucial to protect the privacy of the data during both the training and utilization of machine learning models. In this paper, we propose a privacy-preserving machine learning approach using autoencoders and differential privacy mechanisms to safeguard data privacy while minimizing the impact on data availability. Specifically, we augment logistic regression and ResNet18 models with different architectures of autoencoders to perform data encryption? without compromising the machine learning tasks. Additionally, we employ differential privacy mechanisms to introduce gradient perturbations in the encoding part of the autoencoder, enhancing the algorithm’s security and further protecting data privacy. We also design the cosine similarity between the encoded and original data as a metric for evaluating data privacy, considering model performance, privacy budget, and data privacy collectively to balance data availability and privacy. Extensive experiments conducted on MNIST, CIFAR-10, PathMNIST, and BloodMNIST datasets demonstrate that for simple logistic regression models handling easily classifiable datasets, employing simple autoencoder structures can enhance classification accuracy, with significant performance impact after adding differential privacy. For ResNet18, utilizing convolutional autoencoders for data encryption generally has minimal impact on model classification performance and can even improve accuracy in most cases. Adding differential privacy has minor effects on model classification performance. Selecting appropriate model structures and privacy budgets for different usage scenarios can ensure both data availability and privacy. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.

Named entity recognition aims to identify meaningful words or phrases from text. Traditional NER methods depend heavily on training datasets to learn entity features, which often leads to poor performance in recognizing low-resource entities. Large language models offer a promising solution in low-resource scenarios, but they struggle with entity boundary recognition and often suffer from hallucination issues due to their reliance on general-purpose corpora. In this paper, we propose a novel approach that enhances LLMs' performance in NER by integrating a boundary regularity extraction algorithm and an explanatory path extraction method. The boundary regularity algorithm leverages ChatGPT's summarization capabilities to articulate entity boundaries in natural language, improving boundary detection accuracy. The explanatory path method constructs logical reasoning steps from text to entity recognition, guiding LLMs to generate more accurate predictions and mitigating hallucination problems. Extensive experiments on three public datasets demonstrate that our method outperforms current mainstream LLMs in accurately recognizing entities from unstructured text. These findings validate the effectiveness of our approach and its potential to address key challenges in NER. © 2024 IEEE.

Recent works have shown the remarkable superiority of transformer models in reinforcement learning (RL), where the decision-making problem is formulated as sequential generation. Transformer-based agents could emerge with self-improvement in online environments by providing task contexts, such as multiple trajectories, called in-context RL. However, due to the quadratic computation complexity of attention in transformers, current in-context RL methods suffer from huge computational costs as the task horizon increases. In contrast, the Mamba model is renowned for its efficient ability to process long-term dependencies, which provides an opportunity for in-context RL to solve tasks that require long-term memory. To this end, we first implement Decision Mamba (DM) by replacing the backbone of Decision Transformer (DT). Then, we propose a Decision Mamba-Hybrid (DM-H) with the merits of transformers and Mamba in high-quality prediction and long-term memory. Specifically, DM-H first generates high-value sub-goals from long-term memory through the Mamba model. Then, we use sub-goals to prompt the transformer, establishing high-quality predictions. Experimental results demonstrate that DM-H achieves state-of-the-art in long and short-term tasks, such as D4RL, Grid World, and Tmaze benchmarks. Regarding efficiency, the online testing of DM-H in the long-term task is 28× times faster than the transformer-based baselines. © 2024 Neural information processing systems foundation. A distributed Kalman filter based fault detection scheme incorporating weighted average consensus algorithm for large-scale interconnected systems ⁎

Stimulated by the increasing demands for system safety and process reliability in complex industrial processes, this paper investigates a weighted average consensus algorithm based distributed fault detection scheme for large-scale interconnected systems, using a sensor network where each node is equipped with a Kalman filter (KF). To reduce the communication and computation efforts, the proposed distributed fault detection scheme is splitted into two phases: distributed offline training and online fault detection. To this end, the Expectation-Maximization (EM) algorithm is firstly addressed to identify the unknown measurement matrices and covariance matrices of noise vectors. It is followed by an average consensus algorithm so that the identical Kalman filters can be designed in parallel at all sensor nodes. On this basis, distributed residual generators and test statistics are constructed for fault detection purpose using the average consensus algorithm. Considering that there exist some special conditions, such as the occurrence of node failures, a variation of the distributed Kalman filter based fault detection scheme is proposed by dynamically adjusting the consensus weight. Finally, the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed scheme are demonstrated through a case study on the waste water treatment plants (WWTPs).
