I've been increasingly intrigued by electronic music, sparked in large part by covering an exhibition of designer theremins for IEEE Spectrum in 2013, followed by watching documentaries such as 2014's I Dream of Wires, which traces the history of the modular synthesizer. One notable cohort in the modern electronic music scene are the circuit benders. These folks modify all sorts of audio-enabled equipment, including children's toys and digital keyboards, to produce sounds definitely not intended by the designers. So when I came across the Casio SK-5 keyboard I'd received for my 14th Christmas lurking in my parents' attic, I pounced. Released in 1987, and aimed at younger players, the Casio SK-5 was never intended to be used by serious musicians. The keyboard had only 32 "minikeys" sized for smaller fingers, and it could play just four notes simultaneously. The SK-5 could mimic a number of instruments, but its killer feature was that you could create your own instrument sounds through sampling audio (at a whopping 8-bit resolution).

Deficiencies of applying the traditional least squares support vector machine (LS-SVM) to time series online prediction were specified. According to the kernel function matrix's property and using the recursive calculation of block matrix, a new time series online prediction algorithm based on improved LS-SVM was proposed. The historical training results were fully utilized and the computing speed of LS-SVM was enhanced. Then, the improved algorithm was applied to timc series online prediction. Based on the operational data provided by the Northwest power Grid of China, the method was used in the transient stability prediction of electric powersystem. The results show that, compared with the calculation time of the traditional LS-SVM(75 1 600 ms), that of the proposed method in different time windows is 40-60 ms, proposed method is above 0.8. So the improved method is online prediction. and the prediction accuracy(normalized root mean squared error) of the better than the traditional LS-SVM and more suitable for time series online prediction.

In the unilateral open electricity market in China, the balance account is created as "regulator" between the bidding price of generation and retail price of electricity. Currently, the management of the balance account has serious defects. This might lead to the huge deficit and endanger the operation of market. Based on the incentive compatible principle, we propose a new method to manage the balance account through reward-penalty in the paper. The optimal bidding strategy for the power suppliers considering the new management method is also provided. The test results indicate that the proposed bidding strategy can mitigate the market power of the generation, reduce the market clearing price significantly, keep the fund of the balance account fluctuating within a certain range and further ensure the stability and sustainability of power market operation.

An asynchronous parallel method based on equivalence is proposed for transient stability simulation of powersystem. In the method, the system is partitioned into several interconnected subsystems by geographical location, and the subsystems are equivalent each other at each integration step. Each subsystem utilizes equivalent information from other subsystems to calculate independently. At each integration step, a subsystem only needs the predictive equivalence and correctional equivalence once. Additionally, asynchronous parallel technology based on the MPI on the PC-Cluster platform is designed to speed up the convergence. Several cases demonstrate that the proposed method has fast calculation speed and efficiency, as well as the simulation precision accepted for engineering application. For some large scale real system, the real-time or even super-real-time simulation will be realized.
