Variable projection algorithms with sparse constraint for separable nonlinear models

Separable nonlinear models are widely used in various fields such as time series analysis, system modeling, and machine learning, due to their flexible structures and ability to capture nonlinear behavior of data. However, identifying the parameters of these models is challenging, especially when sparse models with better interpretability are desired by practitioners. Previous theoretical and practical studies have shown that variable projection (VP) is an efficient method for identifying separable nonlinear models, but these are based on $L_2$ penalty of model parameters, which cannot be directly extended to deal with sparse constraint. Based on the exploration of the structural characteristics of separable models, this paper proposes gradient-based and trust-region-based variable projection algorithms, which mainly solve two key problems: how to eliminate linear parameters under sparse constraint;and how to deal with the coupling relationship between linear and nonlinear parameters in the model. Finally, numerical experiments on synthetic data and real time series data are conducted to verify the effectiveness of the proposed algorithms.

Preserving details and avoiding high computational costs are the two main challenges for the High-Resolution Salient Object Detection (HRSOD) task. In this paper, we propose a two-stage HRSOD model from the perspective of evolution and succession, including an evolution stage with Low-resolution Location Model (LrLM) and a succession stage with High-resolution Refinement Model (HrRM). The evolution stage achieves detail-preserving salient objects localization on the low-resolution image through the evolution mechanisms on supervision and feature;the succession stage utilizes the shallow high-resolution features to complement and enhance the features inherited from the first stage in a lightweight manner and generate the final high-resolution saliency prediction. Besides, a new metric named Boundary-Detail-aware Mean Absolute Error (MAEBD) is designed to evaluate the ability to detect details in high-resolution scenes. Extensive experiments on five datasets demonstrate that our network achieves superior performance at real-time speed (49 FPS) compared to state-of-the-art methods. The fair and objective assessment of performances and competitions is a common pursuit and challenge in human society. The application of computer vision technology offers hope for this purpose, but it still faces obstacles such as occlusion and motion blur. To address these hindrances, our DanceFix proposes a bidirectional spatial-temporal context optical flow correction (BOFC) method. This approach leverages the consistency and complementarity of motion information between two modalities: optical flow, which excels at pixel capture, and lightweight skeleton data. It enables the extraction of pixel-level motion changes and the correction of abnormal skeleton data. Furthermore, we propose a part-level dance dataset (Dancer Parts) and part-level motion feature extraction based on task decoupling (PETD). This aims to decouple complex whole-body parts tracking into fine-grained limb-level motion extraction, enhancing the confidence of temporal information and the accuracy of correction for abnormal data. Finally, we present the DNV dataset, which simulates fully neat group dance scenes and provides reliable labels and validation methods for the newly introduced group dance neatness assessment (GDNA). To the best of our knowledge, this is the first work to develop quantitative criteria for assessing limb and joint neatness in group dance. We conduct experiments on DNV and video-based public JHMDB datasets. Our method effectively corrects abnormal skeleton points, flexibly embeds, and improves the accuracy of existing pose estimation algorithms. On -additive polycyclic codes and their Gray images

In this paper, we first generalize the polycyclic codes over finite fields to polycyclic codes over the mixed alphabet $$\mathbb {Z}_2\mathbb {Z}_4$$ , and we show that these codes can be identified as $$\mathbb {Z}_4[x]$$ -submodules of $$\mathcal {R}_{\alpha ,\beta }$$ with $$\mathcal {R}_{\alpha ,\beta }=\mathbb {Z}_2[x]/\langle t_1(x)\rangle \times \mathbb {Z}_4[x]/\langle t_2(x)\rangle $$ , where $$t_1(x)$$ and $$t_2(x)$$ are monic polynomials over $$\mathbb {Z}_2$$ and $$\mathbb {Z}_4$$ , respectively. Then we provide the generator polynomials and minimal generating sets for this family of codes based on the strong Gröbner basis. In particular, under the proper defined inner product, we study the dual of $$\mathbb {Z}_2\mathbb {Z}_4$$ -additive polycyclic codes. Finally, we focus on the characterization of the $$\mathbb {Z}_2\mathbb {Z}_4$$ -MDSS and MDSR codes, and as examples, we also present some (almost) optimal binary codes derived from the $$\mathbb {Z}_2\mathbb {Z}_4$$ -additive polycyclic codes.

AN EFFICIENT NULLSPACE-PRESERVING SADDLE SEARCH METHOD FOR PHASE TRANSITIONS INVOLVING TRANSLATIONAL INVARIANCE

In this work, we propose an efficient nullspace-preserving saddle search (NPSS) method for a class of phase transitions involving translational invariance, where the critical states are often degenerate. The NPSS method includes two stages, escaping from the basin and searching for the index-1 generalized saddle point. The NPSS method climbs upward from the generalized local minimum in segments to overcome the challenges of degeneracy. In each segment, an effective ascent direction is ensured by keeping this direction orthogonal to the nullspace of the initial state in this segment. This method can escape the basin quickly and converge to the transition states. We apply the NPSS method to the phase transitions between crystals, and between crystal and quasicrystal, based on the Landau-Brazovskii and Lifshitz-Petrich free energy functionals. Nonreciprocity with Structured Light Using Optical Pumping in Hot Atoms

Nonreciprocal transmission of structured light has possible applications in high-capacity optical communication and high-dimensional signal processing. Here, we demonstrate the magnet-free and cavity-free optical nonreciprocity of an orbital-angular-momentum (OAM) beam using optical-pumping technology with the assistance of the Doppler effect in hot atoms. By using optical pumping to induce a direction-dependent population transfer of the ground-state atoms, we realize optical nonreciprocity for the signal laser that is carrying OAM. Interestingly, an isolation ratio close to 30 dB and maximum transmission over 0.86 can be achieved simultaneously without the use of an optical cavity. Due to the unique amplitude and helical phase profile of the structured light, our proposal may open an avenue for exploring the singularity characteristics of optical nonreciprocity using structured light.

Aiming at the problem that reprojection error (RE) cannot reflect the camera calibration accuracy intuitively, this paper proposes a method to verify the camera calibration results in world coordinate system. Firstly, the checkerboard calibration target is photographed with the camera under test, and the internal parameters and distortion parameters of the camera are calculated by using the pinhole model and the Kannala-Brandt (KB) fisheye model, respectively. Then, the same camera is used to shoot two targets in the field of view (FOV), and the pixel coordinates of the two target points are detected from the image. Thirdly, the inverse projection model is used to calculate the distance between the two objects and the angle between the camera and the two objects, and the real distance and angle are compared. The experimental results show that the average distance errors of the pinhole model and the KB fisheye model are 0.34% and 0.35%, respectively, and the angle errors are 0.40% and 0.12%, respectively, which proves that the verification method can effectively characterize the calibration accuracy of the camera.

This work presents a high isolation UWB-MIMO antenna with a bandwidth up to 8.6 GHz based on a Minkowski fractal structure. The proposed antenna is fed by microstrip and comprises two orthogonal monopole antennas, which delivers a decent isolation effect. Moreover, the ground is designed as two separated blocks with an I-shaped branch for improving the isolation degree between the units. The resultant isolation degree of this antenna is greater than 25 dB. Besides, the electromagnetic interference in the partial frequency band (such as Wi-Max band (3.45–4.45 GHz), WLAN band (5.1– 5.8 GHz), and X-band (7.25–7.75 GHz)) is further prevented through etching a split-ring resonator (SRR) and C-slot on the unit. The antenna reflection coefficient of the UWB-MIMO antenna at the notch is 3.5 dB, which indicates that the antenna has a conspicuousness anti-interference effect. Through the above judicious design, the proposed UWB-MIMO antenna possesses a relative bandwidth of 113% (up to 8.6 GHz). The envelope correlation coefficient between antenna units is less than 0.005, and the antenna radiation efficiency is up to 80%. Improved Uniform Linear Array Fitting Scheme with Increased Lower Bound on Uniform Degrees of Freedom for DOA Estimation

Recently, uniform linear array (ULA) fitting (UF) principle is proposed for sparse array (SA) design using pseudo-polynomial equations. Typically, it is verified that the designed SAs via UF enjoy a lower bound on uniform degrees of freedom (uDOF), which is approximately 0.5N2 with N sensors. Herein, an improved UF (IUF) scheme is proposed to significantly increase the lower bound on uDOF, which is realized by introducing two sub-ULAs, with name of adjoint transfer arrays (ATAs), on both sides of a transfer sub-ULA. The ATAs together with the transfer sub-ULA serve as a new layer to construct an adjoint transfer layer (ATL) that has improved aperture in comparison with traditional transfer layer to improve the lower bound on uDOF, which is derived in detail. Furthermore, two novel SAs are developed based on the ATL to verify the effectiveness of the proposed IUF scheme to increase the uDOF. Compact Broadband Rectifier With Wide Input Power Range Based on Adaptive Input Power Distribution

This paper presents a novel compact rectifier array with both broadband and wide input power range characteristics. The rectifier array consists of two rectifier units operating at low-power and high-power levels, respectively, and an adaptive input power distribution network (AIPDN) enabling automatic distribution of radio frequency (RF) energy at different power levels. In addition, a matching inductance is introduced to counteract the capacitance of the diode. As a result, the high RF-DC power conversion efficiency (PCE) is achieved in both broadband and wide input power range. For demonstration, a prototype of the presented rectifier array is fabricated and measured. The measured results are in good accordance with the simulated results. With an input power range of 8 – 25 dBm and a bandwidth of 1.82 – 2.75 GHz (fractional bandwidth of 40.7%), the PCE is greater than 50%. At 2.4 GHz, the input power ranges from -5.5 to 27.5 dBm with PCE greater than 50%. Besides, a peak PCE of 72.1% is obtained at an input power of 25 dBm. This work can lay the foundation for the development of a new RF energy harvest systems with wide frequency band and dynamic input power. © 2022, CC BY.
