In the last years several drafts, recommendations and concepts for a graphical notation for Topic Maps have been published, but till today no graphical notation is generally approved and used in the Topic Maps community. In this paper we present GTMalpha as a conceptual new notation for a graphical representation of Topic Maps. Our objective is, to provide a practical usable notation, which allows a complete, consistent as well as easy to use graphical representation of any given topic map draft. GTMalpha provides a domain as well as a subject centric view and most important it considers the unique characteristics of the Topic Maps paradigm. This paper serves as a user oriented GTMalpha manual for ontology designers, domain experts as well as users.

The limited coverage of available Arabic language lexicons causes a serious challenge in Arabic cross language information retrieval. Translation in cross language information retrieval consists of assigning one of the semantic representation terms in the target language to the intended query. Despite the problem of the completeness of the dictionary, we also face the problem of which one of the translations proposed by the dictionary for each query term should be included in the query translations. In this paper, we describe the implementation and evaluation of an Arabic/English word translation disambiguation approach that is based on exploiting a large bilingual corpus and statistical co-occurrence to find the correct sense for the query translations terms. The correct word translations of the given query term are determined based on their cohesion with words in the training corpus and a special similarity score measure. The specific properties of the Arabic language that frequently hinder the correct match are taken into account.

Although data Warehousing is regarded as a mature technology now, the definition of a federated architecture for data Warehouse (DW) integration remains an open research question. This paper identifies requirements on a Federated DW System and proposes an architecture supporting the tightly coupled integration of heterogeneous data marts into a global, logical schema. In order to enable the processing of queries in the federation, our approach provides a Dimension Algebra (DA) and Fact Algebra (FA) to define the mappings between the global and local schemas. Moreover, we demonstrate how to apply DA and FA expressions for dimension and fact integration and explain the benefits of such an approach.

The challenge of supporting Ubiquitous Computing is to assist the user by helping their applications make better decisions with better information. Smart spaces and other information sources can provide this information, but it is unrealistic to expect all the information to be represented in the same way everywhere. This means that the goal of ubiquitous computing translates into a problem of information integration. This paper presents a new knowledge-driven approach to applying contextual information to user applications. The objective of the design is to use a semantic integration, represented in topic maps, to deliver knowledge found in available services to personalise and improve the functionality of an integrated application. A brief discussion of the different semantic technologies employed in the system is followed by a presentation of the architecture of the system and its novel combination of semantic technologies. Two Use Cases are discussed, one specifically related to Ubiquitous Environments. Finally, the work is related to other research in the areas of Semantic Mediation and Context Awareness.
