Traffic congestion is a very serious problem in large cities. With the number of vehicles increasing rapidly, especially in cities whose economy is booming, the situation is getting even worse. In this paper, by leveraging the techniques of Vehicular Ad hoc Networks (VANETs) we present a dynamic navigation protocol called VAN for individual vehicles to find the shortest-time paths toward their given destinations. Specifically, a vehicle initiates a number of queries, which are routed by VANETs along different paths toward its destination. During query forwarding, the real-time road traffic information in each road segment is aggregated from multiple participating vehicles and returned to the source after the query reaches the destination. This information enables the source to calculate the shortest-time path. We also propose two forwarding optimization methods to reduce communication costs and an error handling mechanism to deal with abnormal circumstances. To evaluate its performance, we use the real traffic data of Beijing, including 2,308 road segments at two different times. Our simulation results demonstrate that our protocol, on average, could save around 30% driving time, compared to traveling along the shortest distance paths. ©2010 IEEE.

The PUMA project fosters the Open Access movement und aims at a better support of the researcher's publication work. PUMA stands for an integrated solution, where the upload of a publication results automatically in an update of both the personal and institutional homepage, the creation of an entry in a social bookmarking systems like BibSonomy, an entry in the academic reporting system of the university, and its publication in the institutional repository. The requirements of OLAP applications increase rapidly by dramatically increased data volume, users, query volume and query complexity. The requirement for shortening update period in data warehouse is another crucial factor for a scalable OLAP application. In this paper, we propose a scalable OLAP prototype to support the query processing with increasing data volume by distributing the whole fact tuples to multiple servers to construct a set of sibling cubes which can be merged together to obtain the whole cube. We employ a light weight distribution policy with fully duplicated dimension tables in each sibling server on the observation of very low proportion of space cost for dimension tables. OLAP query with distributed aggregate functions can be transformed into queries to be performed parallel in sibling servers. For non-distributed computing aggregate functions, such as median, the optimized median aggregate computing algorithm is proposed to reduce transmission volume between servers while computing the global median values. We also present a three-level framework in data warehouse to meet the requirement of shorter update period in "operational business intelligence". An asynchronous tunnel model is proposed to reduce update latency by pre-fetching updated tuples to OLAP processing server. Finally, we set up prototype system ParaCube to evaluate performance in SN (shared-nothing) system and multi-core platforms. © 2010 IEEE.

Many of management systems for business continuity, records and knowledge (BRK) are standalone. Connections and networks of business continuity management systems (BCMS), records management systems (RMS) and knowledge management systems (KMS) are expected to study for facing challenges from evidence-based collaborations in a networked working environment, in terms of control of documented information for business efficiency;guarantee of evidentiality and quality of documented information for organizational effectiveness;and sharing, protecting and increasing values of records as business and knowledge assets for knowledge economy. Based on review of ideas of integration management thinking, best practice frameworks of business continuity management, records management and knowledge management, management models of BCMS, RMS and KMS, an architecture framework towards comprehensive integration management of BRK is proposed by vertical integration design and crosswise integration operations. Case studies demonstrate that such architecture framework has implications to enhance controls of efficiency, effectiveness, and economy of organizational resources and assets adaptable to complex global competition;to improve quality assurance of documented information for supporting evidence-based governance adaptable to dynamic changing of information and communication technologies;to consistent accumulation, sharing and exchanging evidence, memory and knowledge along e-business processes to promote collaboration, optimization and innovation of BCMS, RMS and KMS.

In update intensive main memory database applications, huge volume of log records is generated, to maintain the ACID properties of the database system, the log records should be persistent efficiently. Delegating logging of one main memory database to another main memory database is proposed. The scheme is elaborated in detail in terms of architecture, logging & safeness levels, checkpointing, and recovery. Strict durability and relax durability are provided. When some form of non-volatile memory is used to temporarily holding log records, not only logging efficiency is improved, but also the scheme could guarantee full ACID of the system. We also propose using parallel logging to speedup log persistence by writing logs to multiple disks in parallel. Since interconnection network techniques progress by leaps and bounds, the scheme eliminates the concern about whether the system's overall performance may be slowed down by bandwidth and latency limitations. Experiment results demonstrate the feasibility of the proposal.

With the wide use of web services over the world, an effective and efficient search engine becomes necessary. In this paper, we analyzed the limitation of search method using traditional UDDI, and make it in LR-sryle and take advantage of approximate string matching. Motivated by the feature of WSDL files which define the interfaces of web services, we make operations defined in WSDL files which compose web services as the base units for searching and organize all information of operations and corresponding components as documents, which will facilitate IRStyle keyword searching. In order to improve the precision of searching, we enable users to specify weights in their queries. By defining our ranking function, we sort all the results and present top n ones to users. We also build inverted indexes on operations and corresponding documents to improve query efficiency. In addition, we carry out simple semantic analysis on WSDL files. to acquire better accuracy. At last, not only have we tested the efficiency of query after introducing approximate string matching, but also have we verified the effectiveness of the query results.

Web applications become more and more important, and the corresponding security problems have been concerned about. This paper presents TASA, an ASP static analyzer, which employs a path-sensitive, inter-procedural and context-sensitive data flow analysis, mainly concerning the taint propagation and sanitization. This paper also discusses some techniques used in TASA, such as sanitization routines modeling, ASP specific features, alias analysis and path-related routines modeling, to prune false positives. Experiments on four open source applications show that TASA has a rate of false positive of 4.98% and it can avoid certain false warnings owing to the proposed approaches. © 2010 IEEE.

In this paper, we address the interference and power constrained broadcast/multicast routing problem (D-IPCB/M) in wireless ad hoc networks using directional antenna as a starting point, which jointly considers low-interference and energy-efficiency issues. Then we study the delay-bounded interference and power constrained broadcast/multicast routing problem (DB-D-IPCB/M). An approximation algorithm and a heuristic algorithm with low time complexity are proposed for the D-IPCB/M and DB-D-IPCB/M problem, respectively. Finally, we explore and investigate the multi-constrained subgraph optimization (MCSO) problem. We prove its NP-hard and propose an approximation scheme with theoretical performance guarantee for this class of optimization problems. This is a general result originated from the study of D-IPCB/M and DB-D-IPCB/M problems, which can be applicable to solve different optimization problems such as the multi-constrained broadcast/multicast routing problems. Broadcast/multicast message by using the routing trees found by our algorithms tends to not only have less channel collisions but also save energy to extend network lifetime. The theoretical results are evaluated by simulation studies. © 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Numerous algorithms on geometric networks has been studied, and most of them were based on 2-dimensional networks. But 2-dimensional geometric routing algorithms cannot be directly adapted to the 3-dimensional networks. In this paper, we propose routing algorithms based on the iteration of specific angles on the networks of Delaunay Triangulation in 3D space, and prove the certainty of data transmission of our routing algorithms. In the algorithms, the messages only need to carry information of O(1) nodes and each node just keeps 1-hop neighbors' information.

Video has become popular in our daily life for both professional and consumer applications. Both low level video processing and high level semantic video analysis are critically computational tasks in application domains. Most of current video computing tools are developed for specific analytic tasks, they are lack higher level interoperability with database and treat database merely as a relational data storage engine rather than an analytic platform, which causes inefficient data access and massive amount of data movement. In this paper, we study how to support video data management over relational database, and present our initial solutions of video data storage mechanism, video data access method and efficient video analytics. We also illustrate our ongoing prototype system HybVideo that developed in a novel architecture. It integrates above solutions to tackle the major challenges of providing a platform for both storage and analysis of video data.
