Heart disorders are one of the most problematic issues of human health. There are currently many efforts to reduce the time for first assistance based on electronic systems that continuously records the electric heart activity for further inspection and anomalies detection. The most popular are portable monitoring systems based on the Electrocardiogram (ECG) signal. However, an efficient detection of heart problems still being a big challenge mainly due to the difficulty of accessing some specific cardiac problems and signal variations between different patients. A different technique for heart diagnosing is based on spatial recording of electrical heart activity, commonly known as Vectorcardiogram (VCG). VCG is pointed by several authors as a more efficient tool than ECG for heart inspection and problem detection. This research explores the possibility of using VCG signals in a portable device for constant heart monitoring and injuries detection. It is presented a portable solution with VCG recording and digital signal processing for automatic diagnosis. This paper covers the aspects of the VCG signal and its ability to be converted into a 12-lead ECG signal. It is also presented a system for automatic diagnosis based on VCG which is based on a multichannel portable hardware platform to support noise cancellation, parameter extraction and decision making algorithms. © 2013 IEEE.

AEMOS is a simulator which aims to support the development of agent-based electronic markets capable of dealing with the natural semantic heterogeneity existent in this kind of environment. AEMOS simulates a marketplace which provides ontology matching services, enhanced with the exploitation of emergent social networks, enabling an efficient and transparent communication between agents, even when they use different ontologies. The system recommends possible alignments between the agent's ontologies, and lets them negotiate and decide which alignment should be used to translate the exchanged messages. In this paper we propose a new ontology alignment negotiation process, which promotes the reutilization and combination of already existent alignments, as well as the involvement of the business agents in the alignment composition process. With this new model, we aim to achieve a higher adequacy of the used alignments, as well as a more accurate and trustful evaluation of the alignments. © 2013 DIME UNIVERSITÀ DI GENOVA.

This article aims to apply the concepts associated with artificial neural networks (ANN) in the control of an autonomous robot system that is intended to be used in competitions of robots. The robot was tested in several arbitrary paths in order to verify its effectiveness. The results show that the robot performed the tasks with success. Moreover, in the case of arbitrary paths the ANN control outperforms other methodologies, such as fuzzy logic control (FLC).

This paper presents a step count algorithm designed to work in real-time using low computational power. This proposal is our first step for the development of an indoor navigation system, based on Pedestrian Dead Reckoning (PDR). We present two approaches to solve this problem and compare them based in their error on step counting, as well as, the capability of their use in a real time system. © 2013 Authors.

Traditional vertically integrated power utilities around the world have evolved from monopoly structures to open markets that promote competition among suppliers and provide consumers with a choice of services. Market forces drive the price of electricity and reduce the net cost through increased competition. Electricity can be traded in both organized markets or using forward bilateral contracts. This article focuses on bilateral contracts and describes some important features of an agent-based system for bilateral trading in competitive markets. Special attention is devoted to the negotiation process, demand response in bilateral contracting, and risk management. The article also presents a case study on forward bilateral contracting: a retailer agent and a customer agent negotiate a 24h-rate tariff.

The intensive use of distributed generation based on renewable resources increases the complexity of power systems management, particularly the short-term scheduling. Demand response, storage units and electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles also pose new challenges to the short-term scheduling. However, these distributed energy resources can contribute significantly to turn the shortterm scheduling more efficient and effective improving the power system reliability. This paper proposes a short-term scheduling methodology based on two distinct time horizons: hour-ahead scheduling, and real-time scheduling considering the point of view of one aggregator agent. In each scheduling process, it is necessary to update the generation and consumption operation, and the storage and electric vehicles status. Besides the new operation condition, more accurate forecast values of wind generation and consumption are available, for the resulting of short-term and very short-term methods. In this paper, the aggregator has the main goal of maximizing his profits while, fulfilling the established contracts with the aggregated and external players.

This paper proposes a wind speed forecasting model that contributes to the development and implementation of adequate methodologies for Energy Resource Management in a distribution power network, with intensive use of wind based power generation. The proposed forecasting methodology aims to support the operation in the scope of the intraday resources scheduling model, namely with a time horizon of 10 minutes. A case study using a real database from the meteorological station installed in the GECAD renewable energy lab was used. A new wind speed forecasting model has been implemented and it estimated accuracy was evaluated and compared with a previous developed forecasting model. Using as input attributes the information of the wind speed concerning the previous 3 hours enables to obtain results with high accuracy for the wind shortterm forecasting.

In an idea generation meeting, the facilitator role is essential to obtain good results. The emotional context of the meeting partially determines the (un)success of the meeting, so the facilitator needs to obtain and process this information. Thus, the facilitator role is to assist the participants to reach their goals, i.e., to generate ideas with quality. Nowadays there are several systems that help people with disabilities on their quotidian tasks. The visual impairment is a problem that affects several people in their tasks and movements. In this work we propose an architecture capable of processing information from the environment and suggesting actions to the user with visual impairments, to avoid a possible obstacle. This architecture intends to improve the support given to the user in their daily movements. The idea is to use speculative computation to predict the users' intentions and even to justify the reactive or proactive users' behaviors. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2013.

Electric power networks, namely distribution networks, have been suffering several changes during the last years due to changes in the power systems operation, towards the implementation of smart grids. Several approaches to the operation of the resources have been introduced, as the case of demand response, making use of the new capabilities of the smart grids. In the initial levels of the smart grids implementation reduced amounts of data are generated, namely consumption data. The methodology proposed in the present paper makes use of demand response consumers' performance evaluation methods to determine the expected consumption for a given consumer. Then, potential commercial losses are identified using monthly historic consumption data. Real consumption data is used in the case study to demonstrate the application of the proposed method.
