This paper aims to design an intelligent algorithm that tracks the maximum power from the photovoltaic system to drive a separately excited DC motor. Three algorithms were studied, namely: perturbation and observation, Sugino-based fuzzy logic control, and adaptive neural fuzzy inference system (ANFIS). The dynamic performance evaluation of the maximum power point tracking unit as well as the grid photovoltaic DC motor speed control was carried out using Matlab-SIMULINK. The proposed photovoltaic system was found feasible to generate the electricity needed to run the DC motor. The results of the simulation showed that the ANFIS-based controller is more robust than other algorithms in terms of obtaining a higher power rating, lower oscillations and reaching a steady state in a short time. © 2024 IEEE.

The goal of this paper is to review the first projects for building automatic computing machines during the first half of the 20th century. The presented timeline shows that 85 years ago - in October 1939 - the first breadboard proof-of-concept prototype of an electronic digital computer became operational. The credit for this revolutionary invention goes to John Vincent Atanasoff at Iowa State College. Using fresh insights and some nearly forgotten facts, we also review the origins of the IEEE Computer Society and the role of organized professional activities, as well as the customer demand for spreading new ideas and design solutions for the fast-growing computer industry. The paper recognizes and explains the contribution of John Vincent Atanasoff to the invention and early development of electronic digital computing and the design of the modern computers that changed the world. © 2024 IEEE.

When a knowledge Discovery from Data (KDD) (Fayyad, Piatetsky-Shapiro, & Smyth, 1996) process is being applied to get knowledge, several methods could be used (Gibert, et al., 2018). A simple and fast way to obtain preliminary insights from data before using KDD models is by generating a basic descriptive analysis. It is one of the most popular ways to describe experimental data and should be the beginning of all data projects. Nevertheless some of the main knowledge that can be extracted in a descriptive analysis is hidden due to underlying multivariate structures which could be elicited through multivariate analysis techniques. Moreover, the domain expert is key for a proper interpretation of descriptive results. At the same time, there is a lack of automatic reporting techniques that can report and help in the interpretation of complex patterns and the use of advanced multivariate techniques. This paper shows the tool developed to generate automatic interpretation of Multiple Correspondence Analysis (MCA) and Principal Components Analysis (PCA) by using RMarkdown. This tool generates a Word document which contains the automatic interpretation of the results, built on the basis of regular expressions ellaborating over the R analytical outputs (either numerical or graphical results). The proposal is being applied with some real data, like INSESS database on social vulnerabilities of the Catalan population. In conclusion, the developed tool contributes to facilitate the factorial methods results, avoiding the misinterpretation of the results and the involuntary skipping of conclusions due to the large amount of knowledge that can be extracted from a complete factorial analysis. Also, this software enables non-expert users to read multivariate analysis results in a friendly way. This paper presents a smart scheme for managing power in a grid-connected and island mode microgrid considering loads priority. The proposed system is developed to manage the energy usage between the hybrid resource and the energy storage system to lower electricity bill. This is achieved by supplying the loads with energy generated from the photovoltaic system and energy storage system besides reducing the energy exchange between the main network and the microgrid. The proposed methodology is based on the difference between the available renewable energy generation, the energy required for active loads, the energy storage system, the state of charge, and the electricity market price. The results show that the proposed controller can achieve lower operating cost and reduce power exchange between the main grid and the micro grid. © 2023 IEEE.

This study focuses on developing an intelligent decision support system (IDSS) that helps a human operator make data-driven decisions. To put IDSS in production, it is necessary to develop two additional components: one oriented to recognize the cluster of new data and the other a knowledge-based resulting from the interpretation of clusters and further association of actions to each cluster, constituting a knowledge base with the alerts and recommendations associated to every profile. Bootstrap-CURE technique is used to handle the initial component, whereas a meta-clustering framework is suggested for interpreting the clusters and providing recommendations. A detailed strategy is presented for handling a print job, examining patterns, and executing actions through IDSS, thus improving predictive accuracy and operational efficiency. Two distinct machine learning models were developed, one to detect the operational mode and another to choose the best meta-cluster for the type of printing jobs and detained steps are provided for implementing the recommendations. © 2024 The Authors.

The introduction of large language models in recent years transformed the use of artificial intelligence in our daily life, making it available to common users and allowing them to interact with natural language processing machines. However, the common and general knowledge of large language models is not reliable when it comes to the quality of the response and its veracity. The proposed work integrates the use of retrieval-augmented generation with large language models with a multi-agent system framework to enable the creation of trees of knowledge where multiple agents have domain specific knowledge. The proposed agent-based solution was tested in a realistic case study where multiple knowledge domains are distributed amongst six different agents. The case study evaluates the capacity of agents to delegate questions according to its topics and the capacity of correctly replying to questions. The results are promising, demonstrating the ability of large language models to assess and process information that wasn’t used in its training process. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

Cancers have emerged as a significant concern due to their impact on public health and society. The examination and interpretation of tissue sections stained with Hematoxylin and Eosin (H&E) play a crucial role in disease assessment, particularly in cases like gastric cancer. Microsatellite instability (MSI) is suggested to contribute to the carcinogenesis of specific gastrointestinal tumors. However, due to the nonspecific morphology observed in H&E-stained tissue sections, MSI determination often requires costly evaluations through various molecular studies and immunohistochemistry methods in specialized molecular pathology laboratories. Despite the high cost, international guidelines recommend MSI testing for gastrointestinal cancers. Thus, there is a pressing need for a new diagnostic modality with lower costs and widespread applicability for MSI detection. This study aims to detect MSI directly from H&E histology slides in gastric cancer, providing a cost-effective alternative. The performance of well-known deep convolutional neural networks (DCNNs) and a proposed architecture are compared. Medical image datasets are typically smaller than benchmark datasets like ImageNet, necessitating the use of off-the-shelf DCNN architectures developed for large datasets through techniques such as transfer learning. Designing an architecture proportional to a custom dataset can be tedious and may not yield desirable results. In this work, we propose an automatic method to extract a lightweight and efficient architecture from a given heavy architecture (e.g., well-known off-the-shelf DCNNs) proportional to a specific dataset. To predict MSI instability, we extracted the MicroNet architecture from the Xception network using the proposed method and compared its performance with other well-known architectures. The Inclined Geosynchronous Orbit (IGSO) satellite has garnered significant attention for its extensive coverage and high-latitude capabilities. Traditionally, tracking methods rely on Two Line Element (TLE) data for satellite position prediction. To decrease reliance on external TLE data and avoid the complex orbit prediction algorithms, this paper conducts an in-depth analysis of the orbital characteristics of IGSO satellites and the accuracy of TLE-based predictions. A tracking method that employs curve fitting is proposed. Experiment results indicate that the tracking accuracy of this method surpasses 0.1°. © 2025 IEEE.

This paper proposes a demand response-based energy management model for energy communities, considering the respective members’ data privacy. Through forecasting and clustering algorithms, this model can identify demand response opportunities for the next day, rank and select the participants for the event and monitor and evaluate the respective event. The paper’s novelty lies in increasing the energy community members' active participation by allowing them to submit one or more proposals to participate in a demand response event. In this way, a member can, on the one hand, have more freedom to choose how to participate and, on the other hand, have more opportunities to contribute to the DR event with their energy flexibility. This model was tested with real data from an energy community with 50 buildings, which can provide flexibility through reductions and shifting. The results showed that the model’s efficiency could increase by considering the multiple proposals per member. Moreover, it was verified that with just one event, it is possible to reduce the CO2 emissions and the energy cost by 50% and 73%, respectively, as well increasing the energy community sustainability by 10%. © 2023 IEEE.

The integration of renewable energy sources into the power grid has led to the need for efficient energy management systems that consider the presence of energy storage systems and controllable loads. In this paper, the authors propose a mixed-integer linear programming optimization model for energy management that takes into account the operation of shift electric appliances and battery storage systems. The proposed model aims to minimize the overall electricity cost while ensuring that the energy demand of the system is met, the battery state of charge is maintained within safe operating limits, and the shift electric appliance met with the user requirements. The authors consider the operational constraints of shifting electric appliances, which can be scheduled to operate during periods of low electricity prices. Additionally, they account for the energy storage system, which can be charged during periods of excess renewable energy production and discharged during periods of high demand. Four different scenarios are tested to prove the value of the model. © 2023 IEEE.
