Phase spectrum based automatic ship detection in synthetic aperture radar images

This paper proposes an automatic ship detection approach in Synthetic Aperture Radar(SAR)Images using phase *** proposed method mainly contains two stages:Firstly,sea-land segmentation of SAR Images is one of the key stages for SAR image application such as sea-targets detection and recognition,which are easily detected only in sea *** order to eliminate the influence of land regions in SAR images,a novel land removing method is *** removing method employs a Harris corner detector to obtain some image patches belonging to land,and the probability density function(PDF)of land area can be estimated by these ***,an appropriate land segmentation threshold is accordingly ***,an automatic ship detector based on phase spectrum is *** proposed detector is free from various idealized assumptions and can accurately detect ships in SAR *** results demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed ship detection algorithm in diversified SAR images.

Porous materials have attracted considerable attention from researchers due to its many uses in molecular separation, heterogeneous catalysis, absorption technologies, and electronic improvements. These solid materials, often defined by their structural voids, are essential in several sectors. This research investigated the impact of carbon doping on the mechanical characteristics of nanoporous silicon matrices. The use of high-purity silicon doping is very beneficial in the semiconductor industry and is crucial for high-power devices and automotive applications. This study simulates a nanoporous silicon sample by molecular dynamics methods, adding carbon doping at different concentrations. The findings demonstrate that when the carbon doping concentration escalated from 1 % to 30 %, the mechanical resistance of the system decreased correspondingly. The ultimate tensile strength fell from 10.26 to 9.02 GPa. Furthermore, Young's modulus rose from 83.47 to 98.37 GPa. The decline in mechanical stability was associated with a drop in the model's total weight, which had considerable ramifications for industrial applications. Thus, incorporating C-doped nanoporous silicon into real applications not only lowered the weight of target materials but also improved their use. © 2025 The Author(s)

This paper considers the problem of constructing data aggregation trees in wireless sensor networks (WSNs)for a group of sensor nodes to send collected information to a single sink *** data aggregation tree contains the sink node,all the source nodes,and some other non-source *** goal of constructing such a data aggregation tree is to minimize the number of non-source nodes to be included in the tree so as to save *** prove that the data aggregation tree problem is NP-hard and then propose an approximation algorithm with a performance ratio of four and a greedy *** also give a distributed version of the approximation *** simulations are performed to study the performance of the proposed *** results show that the proposed algorithms can find a tree of a good approximation to the optimal tree and has a high degree of scalability.

Given that millions of images are uploaded to the social web in a single day, how to effectively retrieve such increasing amounts of unstructured data becomes crucial. While current social platforms find images on the base of user-contributed tags, the tags are known to be subjective and noisy, and consequently put the effectiveness of social image retrieval into question. Different from existing work which focuses on analyzing individual sources of information such as textual and visual separately, in this paper we propose to fuse the heterogeneous information. We investigate the state of the art weighting methods within a linear fusion framework. Image retrieval experiments on a present day benchmark with 46 visual concept queries show encouraging results. Compared to the best search results obtained by a single source of information, the Uniform method and the Coordinate Ascent method obtain relative performance gain of 3.9% and 5.7% in terms of mean average precision. This work provides some practical guidelines for fusing multiple sources of information for improving social image retrieval. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

MacroTrend: A Write-Efficient Cache Algorithm for NVM-Based Read Cache

The future storage systems are expected to contain a wide variety of storage media and layers due to the rapid development of NVM(non-volatile memory)*** NVM-based read caches,many kinds of NVM devices cannot stand frequent data updates due to limited write endurance or high energy consumption of ***,traditional cache algorithms have to update cached blocks frequently because it is difficult for them to predict long-term popularity according to such limited information about data blocks,such as only a single value or a queue that reflects frequency or *** this paper,we propose a new MacroTrend(macroscopic trend)prediction method to discover long-term hot blocks through blocks'macro trends illustrated by their access count *** then a new cache replacement algorithm is designed based on the MacroTrend prediction to greatly reduce the write amount while improving the hit *** conduct extensive experiments driven by a series of real-world traces and find that compared with LRU,MacroTrend can reduce the write amounts of NVM cache devices significantly with similar hit ratios,leading to longer NVM lifetime or less energy consumption.

Newly emerging spatial applications such as the intelligent transportation system require high-performance access to databases. Although research prototypes and spatial extensions on top of commercial DBMSs have been built, the high-performance requirement is difficult to satisfy because most of them employ the traditional disk-based database architecture. With the steadily increasing memory capacity of computer systems, the main-memory database architecture becomes a feasible approach to meeting the requirement, and a few commercial products are developed recently. However, there has been little work on applying the main-memory database to the spatial domain. This paper presents Xmas-SX, a high-performance spatial storage system based on the main-memory database architecture. It provides the core subset of the OpenGIS geometry types, operators, and spatial indexes. Variable-length spatial data are efficiently managed by storing each of them as a sequence of fixed-size fragments. An experiment shows that, compared with a disk-based ODBMS with data fully cached, Xmas-SX shows only 6% better performance for the spatial range query. Before data fully cached, however, the performance gap is much bigger. For the update, Xmas-SX outperforms the ODBMS by more than ten times. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 1999.

Sometimes users of a music retrieval system are not able to explicitly state what they are looking for. They rather want to browse a collection in order to get an overview and to discover interesting content. A common approach for browsing a collection relies on a similarity-preserving projection of objects (tracks, albums or artists) onto the (typically two-dimensional) display space. Inevitably, this implicates the use of dimension reduction techniques that cannot always preserve neighborhood and thus introduce distortions of the similarity space. This paper describes ongoing work on MusicGalaxy - an interactive user-interface based on an adaptive non-linear multi-focus zoom lens that alleviates the impact of projection distortions. Furthermore, the interface allows manipulation of the neighborhoods as well as the projection by weighting different facets of music similarity. This way the visualization can be adapted to the user's way of exploring the collection. Apart from the current interface prototype, findings from early evaluations are presented. © 2010 Sebastian Stober et al.

The increased digitisation of cultural collections and their availability on the World Wide Web has made access to these valuable documents much easier than ever before. However, despite the increased availability of access to cultural archives, curators still struggle to instigate and enhance engagement with these resources. The CULTURA project is actively addressing this issue through the development of a metadata-driven personalisation environment for exploring cultural collections and instigating collaborations. This paper discusses the state of the art in this area and the various innovative approaches used in the CULTURA project, with a special focus on how the underlying metadata helps to facilitate its semantically rich environment. An evaluation of the CULTURA project with students is detailed, highlighting its relevance for those without domain expertise. This is vital as the system needs to adapt and support a full spectrum of users, from professional researchers to interested members of the public.© 2014 Inderscience Enterprises Ltd.

This paper describes an adaptable search user interface whose main focus group are young users. In order to address continuous and – compared to middle-age users – relatively fast changes in cognitive, fine motor skills and other abilities of young users, we developed a first prototype of an evolving search user interface (ESUI). This ESUI is able to handle changes in design requirements. It is adaptable towards individual user characteristics allowing a flexible modification of the SUI in terms of UI element properties like font size, but also UI element types and their properties. In this work, the goal of SUI adaptation is emotional support for children because positive attitudes towards the system keep them motivated. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2014.

Cross-lingual image captioning, with its ability to caption an unlabeled image in a target language other than English, is an emerging topic in the multimedia field. In order to save the precious human resource from re-writing reference sentences per target language, in this paper we make a brave attempt towards annotation-free evaluation of cross-lingual image captioning. Depending on whether we assume the availability of English references, two scenarios are investigated. For the first scenario with the references available, we propose two metrics, i.e., WMDRel and CLinRel. WMDRel measures the semantic relevance between a model-generated caption and machine translation of an English reference using their Word Mover's Distance. By projecting both captions into a deep visual feature space, CLinRel is a visual-oriented cross-lingual relevance measure. As for the second scenario, which has zero reference and is thus more challenging, we propose CMedRel to compute a cross-media relevance between the generated caption and the image content, in the same visual feature space as used by CLinRel. We have conducted a number of experiments to evaluate the effectiveness of the three proposed metrics. The combination of WMDRel, CLinRel and CMedRel has a Spearman's rank correlation of 0.952 with the sum of BLEU-4, METEOR, ROUGE-L and CIDEr, four standard metrics computed using references in the target language. CMedRel alone has a Spearman's rank correlation of 0.786 with the standard metrics. The promising results show high potential of the new metrics for evaluation with no need of references in the target language. © 2021 ACM.
