Time Series forecasting (univariate and multivariate) is a problem of high complexity due the different patterns that have to be detected in the input, ranging from high to low frequencies ones. In this paper we propose a new model for timeseries prediction that utilizes convolutional layers for feature extraction, a recurrent encoder and a linear autoregressive component. We motivate the model and we test and compare it against a baseline of widely used existing architectures for univariate and multivariate timeseries. The proposed model appears to outperform the baselines in almost every case of the multivariate timeseries datasets, in some cases even with 50% improvement which shows the strengths of such a hybrid architecture in complex timeseries. Interactive Collaborative Exploration using Incomplete Contexts

A well-known knowledge acquisition method in the field of Formal Concept Analysis (FCA) is attribute exploration. It is used to reveal dependencies in a set of attributes with help of a domain expert. In most applications no single expert is capable (time- and knowledge-wise) of exploring the knowledge domain alone. However, there is up to now no theory that models the interaction of multiple experts for the task of attribute exploration with incomplete knowledge. To this end, we to develop a theoretical framework that allows multiple experts to explore domains together. We use a representation of incomplete knowledge as three-valued contexts. We then adapt the corresponding version of attribute exploration to fit the setting of multiple experts. We suggest formalizations for key components like expert knowledge, interaction and collaboration strategy. In particular, we define an order that allows to compare the results of different exploration strategies on the same task with respect to their information completeness. Furthermore we discuss other ways of comparing collaboration strategies and suggest avenues for future research. Copyright © 2019, The Authors. All rights reserved.

This paper explores a novel multi-modal alternating learning paradigm pursuing a reconciliation between the exploitation of uni-modal features and the exploration of cross-modal interactions. This is motivated by the fact that current paradigms of multi-modal learning tend to explore multi-modal features simultaneously. The resulting gradient prohibits further exploitation of the features in the weak modality, leading to modality competition, where the dominant modality overpowers the learning process. To address this issue, we study the modality-alternating learning paradigm to achieve reconcilement. Specifically, we propose a new method called ReconBoost to update a fixed modality each time. Herein, the learning objective is dynamically adjusted with a reconcilement regularization against competition with the historical models. By choosing a KL-based reconcilement, we show that the proposed method resembles Friedman's Gradient-Boosting (GB) algorithm, where the updated learner can correct errors made by others and help enhance the overall performance. The major difference with the classic GB is that we only preserve the newest model for each modality to avoid overfitting caused by ensembling strong learners. Furthermore, we propose a memory consolidation scheme and a global rectification scheme to make this strategy more effective. Experiments over six multi-modal benchmarks speak to the efficacy of the method. We release the code at https://***/huacong/ReconBoost.

Real-world data in emerging applications may suffer from highly-skewed class imbalanced distribution, however how to deal with this kind of problem appropriately through deep learning needs further investigation. In this paper, we mainly propose a novel cross-entropy based loss function, referred to as Additive Scale Loss (ASL), for deep representation learning and imbalanced classification. To deal with the class imbalanced problem, ASL aims at increasing the loss in case of misclassification, which can avoid the superimposed loss values caused by the large amount of easily classified data in the unbalanced database to dominate the loss value of misclassified data. Moreover, in real-world applications, one data source may be used for multiple scenarios, such as classification and embedding learning, however training two separable models to handle these problems is costly, especially in deep learning area. To tackle this issue, we present and integrate a discriminative inter-class separation term into ASL, and propose a discriminative ASL (D-ASL), which can not only improve the classification performance, but also obtain discriminative representations simultaneously. The discriminative inter-class separation term is general, and can be easily integrated to other loss functions, such as CE and FL, as the byproducts. Finally, a new deep convolutional neural network equipped with D-ASL and a fully-connected (FC) layer is proposed, which can classify the imbalanced image data and obtain the discriminative representations at the same time. Extensive experimental results verified the superior performance of our method.

Compared with univariate time series clustering, multivariate time series (MTS) clustering has become a challenging research topic on the data mining of time series. In this paper, a novel model-based approach Adaptive State Continuity-Based Sparse Inverse Covariance Clustering (ASCSICC) is proposed for MTS clustering. Specifically, the state continuity is introduced to make the traditional Gaussian mixture model (GMM) applicable to time series clustering. To prevent overfitting, the alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) is applied to optimize the parameter of GMM inverse covariance. In addition, the proposed approach simultaneously segments and clusters the time series. Technically, first, the adaptive state continuity is estimated based on the distance similarity of adjacent time series data. Then, a dynamic programming algorithm of cluster assignment by adaptive state continuity is taken as the E-step, and the ADMM for solving sparse inverse covariance is taken as the M-step. E-step and M-step are combined into an Expectation-Maximization (EM) algorithm to conduct the clustering process. Finally, we show the effectiveness of the proposed approach by comparing the ASC-SICC with several state-of-the-art approaches in experiments on two datasets from real applications.

Service selection using predictive models and monte-carlo tree search

This article proposes a method for automated service selection to improve treatment efficacy and reduce re-hospitalization costs. A predictive model is developed using the National Home and Hospice Care Survey (NHHCS) dataset to quantify the effect of care services on the risk of re-hospitalization. By taking the patient's characteristics and other selected services into account, the model is able to indicate the overall effectiveness of a combination of services for a specific NHHCS patient. The developed model is incorporated in Monte-Carlo Tree Search (MCTS) to determine optimal combinations of services that minimize the risk of emergency re-hospitalization. MCTS serves as a risk minimization algorithm in this case, using the predictive model for guidance during the search. Using this method on the NHHCS dataset, a significant reduction in risk of re-hospitalization is observed compared to the original selections made by clinicians. An 11.89 percentage points risk reduction is achieved on average. Higher reductions of roughly 40 percentage points on average are observed for NHHCS patients in the highest risk categories. These results seem to indicate that there is enormous potential for improving service selection in the near future. Copyright © 2020, The Authors. All rights reserved.

In this paper, we focus on examining the effects of Ad-context on the click-Through rate (CTR) for the online advertising. Many researches have shown that ad-context congruity is a key factor to CTR, but the features of ad-context are rarely introduced in CTR prediction algorithms. By leveraging data from various sources, and using text mining and sentiment analysis techniques, our proposed approach extracts three types of features (i.e. users, advertisements and ad-context features) to predict CTR. User features describe "Who" is browsing the webpage, advertisement features depict "How" an ad serving is, and ad-context features include "What" the product is, "Where" an ad displays, as well as the "Mood" of the context. Experiment results show that our proposed approach outperforms the benchmark models by introducing ad-context features. Novel ad-context features we proposed make good contributions to the prediction of CTR. The research highlights the power of ad-context in online advertising CTR prediction. Moreover it gives an insight into supporting effective advertising and improving users' satisfaction. © 2018 Universitat zu Koln. All rights reserved.

Incremental processing of noisy user utterances in the spoken language understanding task

The state-of-The-Art neural network architectures make it possible to create spoken language understanding systems with high quality and fast processing time. One major challenge for real-world applications is the high latency of these systems caused by triggered actions with high executions times. If an action can be separated into subactions, the reaction time of the systems can be improved through incremental processing of the user utterance and starting subactions while the utterance is still being uttered. In this work, we present a model-Agnostic method to achieve high quality in processing incrementally produced partial utterances. Based on clean and noisy versions of the ATIS dataset, we show how to create datasets with our method to create low-latency natural language understanding components. We get improvements of up to 47.91 absolute percentage points in the metric F1-score. Copyright © 2019, The Authors. All rights reserved.
