This paper presents our experiments on continuous audiovisual speech recognition. A number of bimodal systems using feature fusion or fusion within Hidden Markov Models are implemented. Experiments with different fusion techniques and their results are presented. Further the performance levels of the bimodal system and a unimodal speech recognizer under noisy conditions are compared.

Recently, research projects such as PADLR and SWAP have developed tools like Edutella or Bibster, which are targeted at establishing peer-topeer knowledge management systems. In such a system, it is necessary to obtain brief semantic descriptions of peers, so that routing algorithms or matchmaking processes can make decisions about which communities peers should belong to, or to which peers a given query should be forwarded. This paper provides a graph clustering technique on knowledge bases for that purpose. Using this clustering, we can show that our strategy requires up to 58% fewer queries than the baselines to yield full recall in a bibliographic peer-to-peer scenario.

Recently, several research projects such as PADLR and SWAP have developed tools like Edutella or Bibster, which have been targeted at establishing peer-to-peer knowledge management (P2PKM) systems. In such a system, it is necessary for participants to provide brief descriptions of themselves, so that routing algorithms or matchmaking processes can make decisions about which communities peers should belong to, or to which peer a given query should be forwarded. In this talk, I propose the use of graph clustering techniques on knowledge bases for that purpose. After a brief round-trip over an ontology-based P2P knowledge management scenario, I will demonstrate the automatic generation of self-descriptions of peers' knowledge bases through the use of graph clustering. Viewing the knowledge base of a peer as a graph consisting of concepts and instances, one can employ clustering techniques to partition it into clusters of similar entities. From each cluster, the centroid can then be selected as a representative. This yields a list of entities giving an aggregated self description of the peer.
Linked data use has expanded rapidly in recent years;however there is still a lack of support for casual users to create complex queries over this Web of data. Until this occurs, the real benefits of having such rich ...

The number of digital collections in the cultural heritage domain is increasing year on year. Improved quality of access to cultural collections, especially those collections which are not exhibited physically is a key objective of the digitisation process. Despite some successes in this area, many digitised collections struggle to attract users or to maintain their interest over a prolonged period. One of the key reasons for this is that users of these archives vary in expertise (from professional researchers to school children) and have different tasks and goals that they are trying to accomplish. This paper describes CULTURA, an FP7 funded project that is addressing this specific issue through its four-phase personalisation approach and accompanying suite of services. By employing such personalisation techniques, CULTURA is helping the exploration of, linking to, and collaboration around cultural heritage collections.

The common vision of pervasive computing environments requires a very large range of devices and software components to interoperate seamlessly. From the assumption that these devices and associated software permeate the fabric of everyday life, a massive increase looms in the number of software developers deploying functionality into pervasive computing environments. This poses a very large interoperability problem for which solutions reliant solely on interoperability standards will not scale. An interoperability problem of a similar scale is presented by the desire for a Semantic Web supporting autonomous machine communication over the WWW. Here, solutions based on service-oriented architectures and ontologies are being actively researched, and we examine how such an approach could be used to address pervasive computing's interoperability problem. The paper outlines the potential role that semantic techniques offer in solving some key challenges, including candidate service discovery, intelligent matching, service adaptation and service composition. In particular the paper addresses the resulting requirement of semantic interoperability outlining initial results in dynamic gateway generation. In addition the paper proposes a roadmap identifying the different scenarios in which semantic techniques will contribute to the engineering and operation of pervasive computing systems.

The management of dynamic spectrum access requires the coordination of administrative functions across multiple organizations, from regulators to secondary market operators and commons cooperatives. Policy-based management approaches to dynamic spectrum access must therefore support a wide range of organizational types and handle the relationships between policies authored separately within those organizations. A policy language for administering dynamic access to spectrum resources has been proposed by the DARPA XG initiative. This defines an expressive and extensible language for specifying policies that determine the correct behavior of RIF transceivers as spectrum usage opportunities occur. However, this language does not yet address the mapping of policies onto the complex organizational settings that are likely to emerge in the dynamic spectrum access domain. This paper defines how the DARPA XG policy language can be integrated with a meta-policy management scheme that provides the powerful organizational modeling and policy authoring authority control needed to manage the evolution of policies in these complex organizational settings. The benefits of this integration are illustrated through a case study based on the potential use of dynamic spectrum access licenses granted in Ireland for the DySpan 2007 conference, and the organizational conflicts that even this simple scenario can yield. The practical issues of administering a multi-organizational policy management system are examined through an analysis of the interactions between existing components that are being assembled to demonstrate sophisticated policy management of a cognitive radio system.
