While the analysis of online social networks is a prominent research topic, offline real-world networks are still not covered extensively. However, their analysis can provide important insights into human behavior. In this paper, we analyze influence factors for link prediction in human contact networks. Specifically, we consider the prediction of new links, and extend it to the analysis of recurring links. Furthermore, we consider the impact of stronger ties for the prediction. The results and insights of the analysis are a first step onto predictability applications for human contact networks.

Efficiently locating learning content and web services for adaptive and personalized online courses is a demanding research area. This paper identifies the key challenges that need to be addressed. An approach is then presented that empowers educators to locate relevant learning resources and services through domain expertise and semantics that are meaningful to them. This approach utilizes the existing SARA, SABer and Adaptive Engine systems, in order to support an application that educators can effectively engage with to form adaptive courses. A compelling case study in the Technology Enhanced Learning domain is detailed, as well as an overview of the architecture that the AMAS project uses for supporting such a scenario.

Although data Warehousing is regarded as a mature technology now, the definition of a federated architecture for data Warehouse (DW) integration remains an open research question. This paper identifies requirements on a Federated DW System and proposes an architecture supporting the tightly coupled integration of heterogeneous data marts into a global, logical schema. In order to enable the processing of queries in the federation, our approach provides a Dimension Algebra (DA) and Fact Algebra (FA) to define the mappings between the global and local schemas. Moreover, we demonstrate how to apply DA and FA expressions for dimension and fact integration and explain the benefits of such an approach.

In order to support a software development team in its day-to-day operations, different data sources can be exploited. In this paper, we focus on CVS logs and communication profiles between developers provided by RFID-proximity information. We provide a novel approach for combining the data sources into a graph, and apply the page rank algorithm for capturing interesting knowledge about resource and developer profiles. Additionally, we discuss the application in the software developer setting, and also for project management. The proposed approach is evaluated in the context of a real-world developer setting.

Personalization is increasingly vital especially for enterprises to be able to reach their customers. The key challenge in supporting personalization is the need for rich metadata, such as metadata about structural relationships, subject/concept relations between documents and cognitive metadata about documents (e.g. difficulty of a document). Manual annotation of large knowledge bases with such rich metadata is not scalable. As well as, automatic mining of cognitive metadata is challenging since it is very difficult to understand underlying intellectual knowledge about document automatically. On the other hand, the Web content is increasing becoming multilingual since growing amount of data generated on the Web is non-English. Current metadata extraction systems are generally based on English content and this requires to be revolutionized in order to adapt to the changing dynamics of the Web. To alleviate these problems, we introduce a novel automatic metadata extraction framework, which is based on a novel fuzzy based method for automatic cognitive metadata generation and uses different document parsing algorithms to extract rich metadata from multilingual enterprise content using the newly developed DocBook, Resource Type and Topic ontologies. Since the metadata generation process is based upon DocBook structured enterprise content, our framework is focused on enterprise documents and content which is loosely based on the DocBook type of formatting. DocBook is a common documentation formatting to formally produce corporate data and it is adopted by many enterprises. The proposed framework is illustrated and evaluated on English, German and French versions of the Symantec Norton 360 knowledge bases. The user study showed that the proposed fuzzy-based method generates reasonably accurate values with an average precision of 89.39% on the metadata values of document difficulty, document interactivity level and document interactivity type. Modern management practice is increasingly focused on human resource management as enterprises attempt to become more agile in response to ever changing customer requirements, competitive environments and technological innovation. This typically involves moving to flatter organizational structures with the devolution of decision-making authority to increasingly self-managed teams. It also requires flexible and complex flows of communication within and between teams. Collaborative and workflow IT system must therefore become increasingly flexible to support the frequent changes in communication flows that come from agile work practices based around project and team-centered working. However, such IT systems are still largely managed using techniques designed for centralized IT administration. In this paper we show how a recent innovation in community-based policy-based management allows the IT administration to be de-centralized in a way that reflects and is highly responsive to the needs of devolved decision-making in agile organization.

Autonomic systems are needed to self-manage the increasing complexity of pervasive communications access and the ubiquitous computing services it offers to humans. Policy based governance is the means by which humans will impose their will upon how autonomic systems manage themselves. Ultimately, these systems mediate information and services between people, in a rich tapestry of human associations formed though personal, commercial, and civic relationships. Therefore, if policies are to accurately reflect the wishes of their human authors, the process of authoring or engineering them must closely reflect the intricacies and fluidity of human relationships. We see this as the route to providing intuitive use of policy systems and thus to autonomic systems in empowering their users. We have previously presented a scheme for community-based management that addressed the dynamic organizational aspects of human relations in policy authoring. In this paper we review developments with this approach and describe its integration with a trust management system designed to flexibly regulate access to resources according to the trust relationships between participants. This approach promises to enable autonomic organisations, with structures that automatically adapt to the collective needs of the users.
