When deploying collaborative applications such as instant messaging in ubiquitous computing environments significant enhancements can be afforded by offering additional context information, such as location information. However, such environments exert key challenges such as increased diversity of ownership and ad hoc, intermittent network connectivity that suits more decentralized computing architectures. This paper examines how a migration to a more decentralized collaborative architecture can be achieved together with a decentralization of the management of collaborative activities

The paper presents a general architecture for a P2P data sharing facility within a multi-agent framework, where peers as autonomous high-level nodal agents cooperate with each other to solve global tasks. A node may have several lower level local agents including local databases and partial global ontologies. In addition there are also minder agents coordinating the activities of the peers that offer the same type of service, thus providing fault-tolerance. The ability of this architecture in data and task sharing has been demonstrated by considering query processing and directory update strategies.

Drawing on the experiences and context of others who have already used a particular resource can greatly facilitate that resource's reuse. Such reuse is essential when the resources in question are digital learning assets, services and models which are expensive both in terms of time and monetary expenditure to develop and use. When these resources are deployed in personalised settings, where each user may be delivered a tailored sequence of resources that uniquely suits their particular needs, gathering and federating a rich view of how these resources are being used becomes important. In this article we describe an approach to facilitating the federating of contextual usage data, which is compiled over the life cycle of a resource. Given that this data is likely to come from a range of different sources, our approach will need to be able to cope with the high level of heterogeneity expected in terms of its structure, syntax and semantics. We describe how such data may be used to support users in assessing the value of learning resources and facilitating their appropriate reuse.
A well-known knowledge acquisition method in the field of Formal Concept Analysis (FCA) is attribute exploration. It is used to reveal dependencies in a set of attributes with help of a domain expert. In most applicat...

StarCraft is a Real-Time Strategy game, which has a large state-space, is played in real-time, and commonly features two opposing players, capable of acting simultaneously. One of the aspects of the game is building walls. In this paper, we present an algorithm that can be used for wall building for an agent playing the game of StarCraft: Brood War.
A recent trend in Natural Language Processing is the exponential growth in Language Model (LM) size, which prevents research groups without a necessary hardware infrastructure from taking part in the development proce...

This paper describes the collaborative participation of Trinity College Dublin and Dublin City University in the Log Analysis for Digital Societies (LADS) task of LogCLEF 2009 track. An analysis of multilingual search logs was carried out with the objectives of investigating how users from different linguistic or cultural backgrounds behave in search, and how the discovery of patterns in user actions could be used for community identification. Our findings suggest that there is scope for further investigation of how search logs can be exploited to personalise and improve cross-language search as well as improve the TEL search system.
Surprising a user with unexpected and fortunate recommendations is a key challenge for recommender systems. Motivated by the concept of bisociations, we propose ways to create an environment where such serendipitous r...

In recent years, healthcare institutions have had problems accessing and maintaining the large amounts of data they deal with. This paper identifies current approaches and technologies which relate to patient administration systems. It argues that, in the near future, WWW-based multimedia patient administration systems would become the norm for healthcare institutions. The development and acceptance of web-based multimedia patient administration systems is likely to aggravate the problem of healthcare institutions being flooded with large amounts of clinical data. A large amount of clinical procedures relating to patient management are repetitive and Workflow Management Systems (WFMS) can automate these repeated activities. We believe that the introduction of WFMS would enable healthcare institutions to face this challenge of transforming large amounts of medical data into contextually relevant clinical information. The central contention of this paper is that there is a dynamic connection between healthcare, workflow and internet technologies, which is being ignored. This paper further establishes that it is possible to build a virtual electronic health record database based on the client server architecture using current internet and object-oriented (OO) technologies.
