Image registration is the process of bringing different images into a common coordinate system - a technique widely used in various applications of computer vision, such as remote sensing, image retrieval, and most commonly in medical imaging. Deep Learning based techniques have been applied successfully to tackle various complex medical image processing problems, including medical image registration. Over the years, several image registration techniques have been proposed using deep learning. Deformable image registration techniques such as Voxelmorph have been successful in capturing finer changes and providing smoother deformations. However, Voxelmorph, as well as ICNet and FIRE, do not explicitly encode global dependencies (i.e. the overall anatomical view of the supplied image) and therefore can not track large deformations. In order to tackle the aforementioned problems, this paper extends the Voxelmorph approach in three different ways. To improve the performance in case of small as well as large deformations, supervision of the model at different resolutions have been integrated using a multi-scale UNet. To support the network to learn and encode the minute structural co-relations of the given image-pairs, a self-constructing graph network (SCGNet) has been used as the latent of the multi-scale UNet - which can improve the learning process of the model and help the model to generalise better. And finally, to make the deformations inverse-consistent, cycle consistency loss has been employed. On the task of registration of brain MRIs, the proposed method achieved significant improvements over ANTs and VoxelMorph, obtaining a Dice score of 0.8013±0.0243 for intramodal and 0.6211±0.0309 for intermodal, while VoxelMorph achieved 0.7747±0.0260 and0.6071±0.0510, respectively. © 2022, The Authors. RPR-Net: A Point Cloud-based Rotation-aware Large Scale Place Recognition Network

Point cloud-based large scale place recognition is an important but challenging task for many applications such as Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM). Taking the task as a point cloud retrieval problem, previous methods have made delightful achievements. However, how to deal with catastrophic collapse caused by rotation problems is still under-explored. In this paper, to tackle the issue, we propose a novel Point Cloud-based Rotation-aware Large Scale Place Recognition Network (RPR-Net). In particular, to solve the problem, we propose to learn rotation-invariant features in three steps. First, we design three kinds of novel Rotation-Invariant Features (RIFs), which are low-level features that can hold the rotation-invariant property. Second, using these RIFs, we design an attentive module to learn rotation-invariant kernels. Third, we apply these kernels to previous point cloud features to generate new features, which is the well-known SO(3) mapping process. By doing so, high-level scene-specific rotation-invariant features can be learned. We call the above process an Attentive Rotation-Invariant Convolution (ARIConv). To achieve the place recognition goal, we build RPR-Net, which takes ARIConv as a basic unit to construct a dense network architecture. Then, powerful global descriptors used for retrieval-based place recognition can be sufficiently extracted from RPR-Net. Experimental results on prevalent datasets show that our method achieves comparable results to existing state-of-the-art place recognition models and significantly outperforms other rotation-invariant baseline models when solving rotation problems. Stable consumer electronic systems can assist traffic better. Good traffic consumer electronic systems require collaborative work between traffic algorithms and hardware. However, performance of popular traffic algorithms containing vehicle detection methods based on deep networks via learning data relation rather than learning differences in different lighting and occlusions is limited. In this paper, we present a dynamic Transformer network for vehicle detection (DTNet). DTNet utilizes a dynamic convolution to guide a deep network to dynamically generate weights to enhance adaptability of an obtained detector. Taking into relations of different information account, a mixed attention mechanism based channel attention and Transformer is exploited to strengthen relations of channels and pixels to extract more salient information for vehicle detection. To overcome the drawback of difference in an image account, a translation-variant convolution relies on spatial location information to refine obtained structural information for vehicle detection. Robust and Fast Measure of Information via Low-rank Representation

The matrix-based Rényi’s entropy allows us to directly quantify information measures from given data, without explicit estimation of the underlying probability distribution. This intriguing property makes it widely applied in statistical inference and machine learning tasks. However, this information theoretical quantity is not robust against noise in the data, and is computationally prohibitive in large-scale applications. To address these issues, we propose a novel measure of information, termed low-rank matrix-based Rényi’s entropy, based on low-rank representations of infinitely divisible kernel matrices. The proposed entropy functional inherits the specialty of of the original definition to directly quantify information from data, but enjoys additional advantages including robustness and effective calculation. Specifically, our low-rank variant is more sensitive to informative perturbations induced by changes in underlying distributions, while being insensitive to uninformative ones caused by noises. Moreover, low-rank Rényi’s entropy can be efficiently approximated by random projection and Lanczos iteration techniques, reducing the overall complexity from O(n3) to O(n2s) or even O(ns2), where n is the number of data samples and s n. We conduct large-scale experiments to evaluate the effectiveness of this new information measure, demonstrating superior results compared to matrix-based Rényi’s entropy in terms of both performance and computational efficiency. Streamlines in the Two-Dimensional Spreading of a Thin Fluid Film: Blowing and Suction Velocity Proportional to the Height

The two-dimensional spreading under gravity of a thin fluid film with suction (fluid leak-off) or blowing (fluid injection) at the base is considered. The thin fluid film approximation is imposed. The height of the thin film satisfies a nonlinear diffusion equation with a source/sink term. The Lie point symmetries of the nonlinear diffusion equation are derived and exist, which provided the fluid velocity at the base, v_n satisfies a first order linear partial differential equation. The general form has algebraic time dependence while a special case has exponential time dependence. The solution in which v_n is proportional to the height of the thin film is studied. The width of the base always increases with time even for suction while the height decreases with time for sufficiently weak blowing. The streamlines of the fluid flow inside the thin film are plotted by first solving a cubic equation. For sufficiently weak blowing there is a dividing streamline, emanating from the stagnation point on the centre line which separates the fluid flow into two regions, a lower region consisting of rising fluid and dominated by fluid injection at the base and an upper region consisting of descending fluid and dominated by spreading due to gravity. For sufficiently strong blowing the lower region expands to completely fill the whole thin film.

Automated SSIM Regression for Detection and Quantification of Motion Artefacts in Brain MR Images

Motion artefacts in magnetic resonance brain images can have a strong impact on diagnostic confidence. The assessment of MR image quality is fundamental before proceeding with the clinical diagnosis. Motion artefacts can alter the delineation of structures such as the brain, lesions or tumours and may require a repeat scan. Otherwise, an inaccurate (e.g. correct pathology but wrong severity) or incorrect diagnosis (e.g. wrong pathology) may occur."Image quality assessment" as a fast, automated step right after scanning can assist in deciding if the acquired images are diagnostically sufficient. An automated image quality assessment based on the structural similarity index (SSIM) regression through a residual neural network is proposed in this work. Additionally, a classification into different groups - by subdividing with SSIM ranges - is evaluated. Importantly, this method predicts SSIM values of an input image in the absence of a reference ground truth image. The networks were able to detect motion artefacts, and the best performance for the regression and classification task has always been achieved with ResNet-18 with contrast augmentation. The mean and standard deviation of residuals' distribution were µ = −0.0009 and σ = 0.0139, respectively. Whilst for the classification task in 3, 5 and 10 classes, the best accuracies were 97, 95 and 89%, respectively. The results show that the proposed method could be a tool for supporting neuro-radiologists and radiographers in evaluating image quality quickly. Copyright © 2022, The Authors. All rights reserved.

CogDL: A Toolkit for Deep Learning on Graphs

Deep learning on graphs has attracted tremendous attention from the graph learning community in recent years. It has been widely adopted in various real-world applications from diverse domains, such as social and information networks, biological graphs, and molecular graphs. In this paper, we present CogDL-an extensive toolkit for deep learning on graphs-that allows researchers and developers to easily conduct experiments and build applications. In CogDL, we propose a unified design for the training loop of graph neural network (GNN) models, making it unique among existing graph learning libraries. By utilizing this unified trainer, we can optimize the GNN training loop with several training techniques such as distributed training and mixed precision training. Moreover, we develop efficient sparse operators for CogDL, enabling it to become the most competitive graph library for efficiency. Additionally, another important CogDL feature is its focus on ease of use with the goal of facilitating open, robust, and reproducible graph learning research. We leverage CogDL to report and maintain benchmark results on the fundamental graph tasks such as node classification and graph classification, which can be reproduced and directly used by the community. Finally, we demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of CogDL for real-world applications in AMiner-a large-scale academic mining and search system. The emergence of novel the dummy data injection attack (DDIA) poses a severe threat to the secure and stable operation of power systems. These attacks are particularly perilous due to the minimal Euclidean spatial separation between the injected malicious data and legitimate data, rendering their precise detection challenging using conventional distance-based methods. Furthermore, existing research predominantly focuses on various machine learning techniques, often analyzing the temporal data sequences post-attack or relying solely on Euclidean spatial characteristics. Unfortunately, this approach tends to overlook the inherent topological correlations within the non-Euclidean spatial attributes of power grid data, consequently leading to diminished accuracy in attack localization. To address this issue, this study takes a comprehensive approach. Initially, it examines the underlying principles of these new DDIAs on power systems. Here, an intricate mathematical model of the DDIA is designed, accounting for incomplete topological knowledge and alternating current (AC) state estimation from an attacker's perspective. This model aims to mitigate the vulnerabilities associated with direct current (DC) flow-based attack data generation methods that can be readily detected. Subsequently, by integrating a priori knowledge of grid topology and considering the temporal correlations within measurement data and the topology-dependent attributes of the power grid, this study introduces temporal and spatial attention matrices. These matrices adaptively capture the spatio-temporal correlations within the attacks. Leveraging gated stacked causal convolution and graph wavelet sparse convolution, the study jointly extracts spatio-temporal DDIA features. This methodology significantly enhances the dynamic correlation mining capability while improving computational efficiency in the neighborhood. Computational Pathology (CPATH) offers the possibility for highly accurate and low-cost automated pathological diagnosis. However, the high time cost of model inference is one of the main issues limiting the application of CPATH methods. Due to the large size of Whole-Slide Image (WSI), commonly used CPATH methods divided a WSI into a large number of image patches at relatively high magnification, then predicted each image patch individually, which is time-consuming. In this paper, we propose a novel Uncertainty-based Model Acceleration (UMA) method for reducing the time cost of model inference, thereby relieving the deployment burden of CPATH applications. Enlightened by the slide-viewing process of pathologists, only a few high-uncertain regions are regarded as “suspicious” regions that need to be predicted at high magnification, and most of the regions in WSI are predicted at low magnification, thereby reducing the times of image patch extraction and prediction. Meanwhile, uncertainty estimation ensures prediction accuracy at low magnification. We take two fundamental CPATH classification tasks (i.e., cancer region detection and subtyping) as examples. Extensive experiments on two large-scale renal cell carcinoma classification datasets demonstrate that our UMA can significantly reduce the time cost of model inference while maintaining competitive classification performance.

A Deep Learning Model for Forecasting Global Monthly Mean Sea Surface Temperature Anomalies

Sea surface temperature (SST) variability plays a key role in the global weather and climate system, with phenomena such as El Niño-Southern Oscillation regarded as a major source of interannual climate variability at the global scale. The ability to be able to make long-range forecasts of sea surface temperature anomalies, especially those associated with extreme marine heatwave events, has potentially significant economic and societal benefits. We have developed a deep learning time series prediction model (Unet-LSTM) based on more than 70 years (1950-2021) of ECMWF ERA5 monthly mean sea surface temperature and 2-metre air temperature data. The Unet-LSTM model is able to learn the underlying physics driving the temporal evolution of the 2-dimensional global sea surface temperatures. The model accurately predicts sea surface temperatures over a 24 month period with a root mean square error remaining below 0.75◦C for all predicted months. We have also investigated the ability of the model to predict sea surface temperature anomalies in the Niño3.4 region, as well as a number of marine heatwave hot spots over the past decade. Model predictions of the Niño3.4 index allow us to capture the strong 2010-11 La Niña, 2009-10 El Nino and the 2015-16 extreme El Niño up to 24 months in advance. It also shows long lead prediction skills for the northeast Pacific marine heatwave, the Blob. However, the prediction of the marine heatwaves in the southeast Indian Ocean, the Ningaloo Niño, shows limited skill.
