Machine learning in the context of noise is a challenging but practical setting to plenty of real-world applications. Most of the previous approaches in this area focus on the pairwise relation (casual or correlational relationship) with noise, such as learning with noisy labels. However, the group noise, which is parasitic on the coarse-grained accurate relation with the fine-grained uncertainty, is also universal and has not been well investigated. The challenge under this setting is how to discover true pairwise connections concealed by the group relation with its fine-grained noise. To overcome this issue, we propose a novel Max-Matching method for learning with group noise. Specifically, it utilizes a matching mechanism to evaluate the relation confidence of each object (cf. Figure 1) w.r.t. the target, meanwhile considering the Non-IID characteristics among objects in the group. Only the most confident object is considered to learn the model, so that the fine-grained noise is mostly dropped. The performance on a range of real-world datasets in the area of several learning paradigms demonstrates the effectiveness of Max-Matching. Copyright © 2021, The Authors. All rights reserved.

This study proposes different standalone models viz: Elman neural network (ENN), Boosted Tree algorithm (BTA), and f relevance vector machine (RVM) for modeling arsenic (As (mg/kg)) and zinc (Zn (mg/kg)) in marine sediments owing to anthropogenic activities. A heuristic algorithm based on the potential of RVM and a flower pollination algorithm (RVM-FPA) was developed to improve the prediction performance. Several evaluation indicators and graphical methods coupled with visualized cumulative probability function (CDF) were used to evaluate the accuracy of the models. Akaike (AIC) and Schwarz (SCI) information criteria based on Dickey-Fuller (ADF) and Philip Perron (PP) tests were introduced to check the reliability and stationarity of the data. The prediction performance in the verification phase indicated that RVM-M2 (PBAIS = -o.0465, MAE = 0.0335) and ENN-M2 (PBAIS = 0.0043, MAE = 0.0322) emerged as the best model for As (mg/kg) and Zn (mg/kg), respectively. In contrast with the standalone approaches, the simulated hybrid RVM-FPA proved merit and the most reliable, with a 5 % and 18 % predictive increase for As (mg/kg) and Zn (mg/kg), respectively. The study's findings validated the potential for estimating complex HMs through intelligent data-driven models and heuristic optimization. The study also generated valuable insights that can inform the decision-makers and stockholders for environmental management strategies. © 2024 Elsevier Ltd

Outlier detection is one of the main fields in machine learning and it has been growing rapidly due to its wide range of applications. In the last few years, deep learning-based methods have outperformed machine learning and handcrafted outlier detection techniques, and our method is no different. We present a new twist to generative models which leverages variational autoencoders as a source for uniform distributions which can be used to separate the inliers from the outliers. Both the generative and adversarial parts of the model are used to obtain three main losses (Reconstruction loss, KL-divergence, Discriminative loss) which in return are wrapped with a one-class SVM which is used to make the predictions. We evaluated our method against several datasets both for images and tabular data and it has shown great results for the zero-shot outlier detection problem and was able to easily generalize it for supervised outlier detection tasks on which the performance has increased. For comparison, we evaluated our method against several of the common outlier detection techniques such as DBSCAN-based outlier detection, GMM, K-means and one class SVM directly, and we have outperformed all of them on all datasets. © 2020 ACM.

Efficient collaboration between engineers and radiologists is important for image reconstruction algorithm development and image quality evaluation in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Here, we develop CloudBrain-ReconAI, an online cloud computing platform, for algorithm deployment, fast and blind reader study. This platform supports online image reconstruction using state-of-the-art artificial intelligence and compressed sensing algorithms with applications for fast imaging (Cartesian and non-Cartesian sampling) and high-resolution diffusion imaging. Through visiting the website, radiologists can easily score and mark images. Then, automatic statistical analysis will be provided. 3D reconstruction is a long-standing research topic in the photogrammetric and computer vision communities;although a plethora of open-source and commercial solutions for 3D reconstruction have been released in the last few years, several open challenges and limitations still exist. Undoubtedly, deep learning algorithms have demonstrated great potential in several remote sensing tasks, including image-based 3D reconstruction. State-of-the-art monocular and stereo algorithms leverage deep learning techniques and achieve increased performance in depth estimation and 3D reconstruction. However, one of the limitations of such methods is that they highly rely on large training sets that are often tedious to obtain;even when available, they typically refer to indoor, close-range scenarios and low-resolution images. Especially while considering UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) scenarios, such data are not available and domain adaptation is not a trivial challenge. To fill this gap, the UAV-based multi-sensor dataset for geospatial research (UseGeo - https://***/home) is introduced in this paper. It contains both image and LiDAR data and aims to support relevant research in photogrammetry and computer vision with a useful training set for both stereo and monocular 3D reconstruction algorithms. In this regard, the dataset provides ground truth data for both point clouds and depth maps. In addition, UseGeo can be also a valuable dataset for other tasks such as feature extraction and matching, aerial triangulation, or image and LiDAR co-registration. The paper introduces the UseGeo dataset and validates some state-of-the-art algorithms to assess their usability for both monocular and multi-view 3D reconstruction. © 2024 The Authors

Identifying arrhythmia substrates and quantifying their heterogeneity has great potential to provide critical guidance for radio frequency ablation. However, quantitative analysis of heterogeneity on cardiac optical coherence tomography (OCT) images is lacking. In this paper, we conduct the first study on quantifying cardiac tissue heterogeneity from human OCT images. Our proposed method applies a dropout-based Monte Carlo sampling technique to measure the model uncertainty. The heterogeneity information is extracted by decoupling the intra/inter-tissue heterogeneity and tissue boundary uncertainty from the uncertainty measurement. We empirically demonstrate that our model can highlight the subtle features from OCT images, and the heterogeneity information extracted is positively correlated with the tissue heterogeneity information from corresponding histology images. © Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2020.

As Queer Human-computer Interaction (HCI) becomes an established part of the larger field, both in terms of research on and with queer populations and in terms of employing queering theories and methods, the role of queer researchers has become a timely topic of discussion. However, these discussions have largely centered around member-researcher status and positionality when working with queer populations. Based on insights gathered at multiple ACM events over the past two years, we identified two pressing issues: (1) we need to better support queer people doing HCI research not specific to queer populations, and (2) we need to identify how to best support member-researchers in leading Queer HCI while including collaborators beyond the queer community. This Special Interest group (SIG) aims to directly address these challenges by convening a broad community of queer researchers and allies, working not only on explicitly-queer topics but across a broad range of HCI topics. © 2021 Owner/Author.

Objective: Monitoring the depth of anesthesia (DoA) plays an important role for administering the drug injection during a surgery, i.e., preventing undesired awareness and inordinate anesthetic depth. Although the bispectral index (BIS) monitor is the golden standard system for the DoA monitoring, it is still not affordable for the developing countries. Alternatively, a low-cost electroencephalogram (EEG) headband can be used. The objective of this paper is to present a new algorithm for estimating the BIS values using a single frontal EEG channel. Method: In the first step, the EEG signal is filtered for the elimination of artifacts and is split into its sub-bands. In the second step, several linear and nonlinear features are extracted from each sub-band and fed to a random forest regression model in order to estimate the BIS. The performance of the proposed algorithm is assessed using EEG data recorded from twenty-four subjects during the general anesthesia and is validated in terms of correlation coefficient (CC) and absolute error (AE) between the reference and estimated BIS values. Results: The proposed algorithm achieved the mean CC of 0.83 and AE of 6.5 for intra subject variability and mean CC of 0.87 and AE of 5.5 for inter subject variability. Significance: Given the similar results for both intra and inter subject variability, the proposed algorithm has the potential to be used in the real-world scenario.
