Entity search and exploration can enrich search user interfaces by presenting relevant information instantly and offering relevant exploration pointers to users. Previous research has demonstrated that large knowledge Graphs allow exploitation and recommendation of explicit links between the entities and other information to improve information access and ranking. However, less attention has been devoted to user interfaces for effectively presenting results, recommending related entities and explaining relations between entities. We introduce a system called SEED which is designed to support entity search and exploration in large knowledge Graphs. We demonstrate SEED using a dataset of hundreds of thousands of movie related entities from the DBpedia knowledge Graph. The system utilizes a graph embedding model for ranking entities and their relations, recommending related entities, and explaining their interrelations. Copyright is held by the author/owner(s).

Developing an integration management system for business continuity, records and knowledge (IMS of BRK) is beneficial to the collaboration, optimization and innovation of business continuity management system (BCMS), records management system (RMS) and knowledge management system (KMS) for organization. Comprehensive research and development requirements along with a cogent framework, however, have not been proposed for integrating three of them, which were proposed independently. Based on situational analysis of cross boundaries integration feasibilities in terms of common understandings, general principles and best practice frameworks from relevant national and international standards, this paper proposes integration thinking to combine the advantages of the three paradigms to sustainable competitive advantages;supported by international best practices, the authors propose an integration route covering five levels of integration framework, two integration approaches and three integration controls for dynamic accumulation, sharing and exchange of evidence, memory and knowledge in digital world and global competition. © 2010 IEEE.

This paper discusses our recent studies on Embodied Conversational Agent (ECA) design strategies to encourage credible and trustworthy dialogue. We approach the problem from two specific directions: the embodiment that the character. wears. during its interchange with the user, and the method of interaction used by the ECA to engage the user. Our results indicate that while users generally prefer to interact with a youthful character matching their ethnicity, no significant preferences were indicated for character gender. For interaction, our results indicated that a character that portrayed trusting nonverbal behaviors was rated as being significantly more credible than a character portraying no nonverbal behavior, or one that portrayed non-trusting behaviors. Other interesting results from this work are also discussed. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2003.

A common application of virtual machines (VM) is to use and then throw away, basically treating a VM like a completely isolated and disposable entity. The disadvantage of this approach is that if there is no malicious activity, the user has to re-do all of the work in her actual workspace since there is no easy way to commit (i.e., merge) only the benign updates within the VM back to the host environment. In this work, we develop a VM commitment system called Secom to automatically eliminate malicious state changes when merging the contents of an OS-level VM to the host. Secom consists of three steps: grouping state changes into clusters, distinguishing between benign and malicious clusters, and committing benign clusters. Secom has three novel features. First, instead of relying on a huge volume of log data, it leverages OS-level information flow and malware behavior information to recognize malicious changes. As a result, the approach imposes a smaller performance overhead. Second, different from existing intrusion detection and recovery systems that detect compromised OS objects one by one, Secom classifies objects into clusters and then identifies malicious objects on a cluster by cluster basis. Third, to reduce the false positive rate when identifying malicious clusters, it simultaneously considers two malware behaviors that are of different types and the origin of the processes that exhibit these behaviors, rather than considers a single behavior alone as done by existing malware detection methods. We have successfully implemented Secom on the Feather-weight Virtual Machine (FVM) system, a Windows-based OS-level virtualization system. Experiments show that the prototype can effectively eliminate malicious state changes while committing a VM with small performance degradation. In this paper, we consider skyline queries in a mobile and distributed environment, where data objects are distributed in some sites （database servers） which are interconnected through a high-speed wired network, and queries are issued by mobile units （laptop, cell phone, etc.） which access the data objects of database servers by wireless channels. The inherent properties of mobile computing environment such as mobility, limited wireless bandwidth, frequent disconnection, make skyline queries more complicated. We show how to efficiently perform distributed skyline queries in a mobile environment and propose a skyline query processing approach, called efficient distributed skyline based on mobile computing （EDS-MC）. In EDS-MC, a distributed skyline query is decomposed into five processing phases and each phase is elaborately designed in order to reduce the network communication, network delay and query response time. We conduct extensive experiments in a simulated mobile database system, and the experimental results demonstrate the superiority of EDS-MC over other skyline query processing techniques on mobile computing.

The search for exotic particles is one of the most challenging topics for physicists. This work aims to resolve the Big data problem in the exotic particle area using the Apache Spark environment with the MLlib library. For this purpose, we analyze and discuss the performance of the following methods: Logistic Regression (LR), Decision Tree (DT), Random Forest (RF), and Gradient Boosted Tree (GBT). The results are very encouraging and prove that these proposed methods run efficiently with an Accuracy exceeding (83%). While the Gradient Boosted Tree (GBT) reaches a high AUC score 85%, better than Decision Tree (DT) and Random Forest. In this manuscript, we attempt to solve a big data problem using the "HEPMASS" dataset. Our data includes 10.5 million examples collected from the UCI website for the experimental phase. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

In document-center XML dataset, an element may contain so many text that users have to spend enough time to judge the elements returned by XML search engine are valuable or not. Query-orient XML summarization system aim to provide users a brief and readable substitution of the original retrieved elements according to the user's query, which can relieve user's reading burden effectively. In this work, we extract sentences from the results of XML search engine, and combine them as a summary. Experiments on the IEEE-CS datasets used in INEX show that, the query-oriented XML summary generated by our method is reasonable. © 2011 IEEE.

A double-layer data-driven framework for the automated vision inspection of the rail surface cracks is proposed in this paper. Based on images of rails, the proposed framework is capable to detect the location of cracks firstly and next automatically obtain the boundary of cracks via a feature-based linear iterative crack aggregation (FLICA). Extended Haar-like features are applied to develop significant features for identifying cracks in images. Built on extended Haar-like features, a cascading classifier ensemble integrating three single cascading classifiers with a major voting scheme is proposed to decide the presence of cracks in the image. Each single cascading classifier is composed of a sequence of stage classifiers trained by the LogitBoost algorithm. A scalable sliding window carrying the cascading classifier ensemble is applied to scan images of rail tracks, which is identified by the Otsu’s method, and detect cracks. After completing the crack registration in the first layer, the FLICA is developed to discover boundaries of cracks. The effectiveness of the proposed data-driven framework for identifying rail surface cracks is validated with the rail images provided by the China Railway Corporation and Hong Kong Mass Transit Railway (MRT). Six benchmarking methods, the Otsu’s method, mean shift, the visual detection system, the geometrical approach, fully convolutional networks and the U-net, are utilized to prove advantages of the proposed framework. Results of the validation and comparative analyses demonstrate that the proposed framework is most effective in the rail surface crack detection. © 2018, Curran Associates Inc. All rights reserved.

Biomedical relation extraction seeks to automatically extract biomedical relations from biomedical text, which plays an important role in biomedical studies. However, constructing high-quality biomedical annotation data is not only time-consuming but also requires a high level of knowledge in the biomedical field. To alleviate this problem, Semi-supervised Biomedical Relation Extraction aims to extract relation facts from the limited labeled data and the more readily available unlabeled samples. Existing works can be roughly categorized as self-training methods and self-ensembling methods. The former aims to generate pseudo labels, which may lead to the gradual drift problem. The latter aims to encourage the output of one model to be consistent with the other model, where the acquisition of the model is tedious. To alleviate these issues, we propose a novel Uncertainty-Guided Mutual Consistency Training framework(UG-MCT) for semi-supervised Biomedical relation extraction. Specifically, our framework consists of two models with the same structure, which differ only when updating their weights, and then an intersecting pseudo-label mechanism is designed to convert the prediction discrepancies of the two models into mutual consistency training loss, thus promoting the consistency of model predictions. In addition, we utilize uncertainty as guided information to assist the model in focusing on the confident pseudo labels and mitigate the noise of inaccurate pseudo labeling during training. Thus, our model is very simple and efficient while mitigating the noise introduced by pseudo-labels. UG-MCT is evaluated on multiple datasets in different settings and the experimental results demonstrate that our method is highly effective in semi-supervised biomedical relation extraction compared to the state-of-the-art. © 2022 IEEE.

Coreference resolution aims at linking all mentions that refer to the same entity, which are widely adopted in many biomedical and bioinformatics tasks, such as biomedical knowledge graph construction and metabolic pathway integration. Many recent studies focus on improving neural model structures. However, we argue that a practical method that integrates commonsense knowledge can further improve coreference resolution performance, because commonsense delivers extra prior knowledge for reasoning and can enhance related representations, rather than naive mention-context occurrence modeling. In this work, we propose an effective method to integrate external commonsense knowledge into a neural coreference resolution model. Specially, a gated attention mechanism is employed in our method to leverage commonsense according to different contexts. By using ConceptNet as the knowledge base in three span-ranking backbone models, the models can yield significant performance gains on used datasets. We also achieve improvements in tasks of long-term mention detection and cross-sentence coreferences after incorporating knowledge. © 2022 IEEE.
