Lexical simplification has attracted much attention in many languages, which is the process of replacing complex words in a given sentence with simpler alternatives of equivalent meaning. Although the richness of vocabulary in Chinese makes the text very difficult to read for children and non-native speakers, there is no research work for the Chinese lexical simplification (CLS) task. To circumvent difficulties in acquiring annotations, we manually create the first benchmark dataset for CLS, which can be used for evaluating the lexical simplification systems automatically. To acquire a more thorough comparison, we present five different types of methods as baselines to generate substitute candidates for the complex word that includes synonym-based approach, word embedding-based approach, BERT-based approach, sememe-based approach, and a hybrid approach. Finally, we design the experimental evaluation of these baselines and discuss their advantages and disadvantages. To our best knowledge, this is the first study for CLS task. © 2014 IEEE.

Steganography is an art to hide information in the carriers to prevent from being detected, while steganalysis is the opposite art to detect the presence of the hidden information. With the development of deep learning, several state-of-the-art steganography and steganalysis based on deep learning techniques have been proposed to improve hiding or detection capabilities. Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) based steganography directly uses the minimax game between the generator and discriminator, to automatically generate steganography algorithms resisting being detected by powerful steganalysis. The steganography without embedding (SWE) based on GANs, where the generated cover images themselves are stego ones carrying secret information has shown its state-of-the-art steganography performance. However, SWE based on GANs has serious weaknesses, such as low information recovery accuracy, low steganography capacity and poor natural showing. To solve these problems, this paper proposes a new SWE based on adversarial training, with carefully designed generator, discriminator and extractor, as well as their loss functions and optimized training mode. The proposed method can achieve a very high information recovery accuracy (100% in some cases), and at the same time improve the steganography capacity and image quality. © 2020 ACM.

Exploring linguistic features and user engagement in Chinese online mental health counseling

With the popularity of online mental health platforms, more individuals are seeking help and receiving social support by openly discussing their problems. Therefore, it's crucial to gain a deeper understanding of which problem disclosures and social support on these platforms can attract more user attention and engagement. Previous research has primarily focused on social media forums. Our work concentrates on the professional mental health platform, intending to understand the linguistic features present in posts that promote user engagement and interaction. We employ text mining and deep learning techniques to analyze posts consisting of 22,250 questions from help-seekers and 78,328 answers providing social support extracted from the Chinese online mental health counseling platform. Initially, we analyze the high-frequency words and topics of the questions and answers to gain insights into the primary focal points and the range of topics covered in these posts. The results indicate that work-related issues are the most concerning and troublesome for help-seekers, and the topics that users follow are approximately 8 types, including growth, family, in-love, marriage, emotions, human-relations, behavioral-therapy and career. Subsequently, we analyze the language usage in question-and-answer posts with different engagement from three aspects: vocabulary categories, linguistic style matching, and language modeling, aiming to identify which linguistic features can attract more user attention and engagement. The results reveal that high-engagement answer posts exhibit a higher degree of linguistic style matching with the corresponding questions, and the use of vocabulary categories also influences the attention and engagement of the posts. With the rapid increase in the amount of website data, it has been a more difficult task for users to get the infor-mation they are interested in. Personalized recommendation is an important bridge to find the information which users really need on the website. Many recent studies have introduced additional attribute information about users and/or items to the rating matrix for alleviating the problem of data sparsity. In order to make full use of the attribute information and scoring matrix, deep learning based recommendation methods are proposed, especially the autoencoder model has attracted much attention because of its strong ability to learn hidden features. However, most of the existing autoencoder- based models require that the dimension of the input layer is equal to the dimension of the output layer, which may increase model complexity and certain information loss when using attribute information. In addition, as users' awareness of privacy protection increases, user attribute information is difficult to obtain. To address the above problems, in this paper, we propose a hybrid personalized recommendation model, which uses a semi-autoencoder to jointly embed the item's score vector and internal graph features (short for Co-Agpre). Specifically, we regard the user-item historical interaction matrix as a bipartite graph, and the Laplacian of the user-item co-occurrence graph is utilized to obtain the graph features of the item for solving the problem of sparse attributes. Then a semi-autoencoder is introduced to learn the hidden features of the item and perform rating prediction. The proposed model can flexibly use information from different sources to reduce the complexity of the model. Experiments on two real-world datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed Co-Agpre compared with state-of-the-art methods.

For the high density of users and accompanying network service requirements in the cellular system, Device-to-Device (D2D) communication is a promising technology to cope with the increasing wireless traffic demands by reusing spectrum resources. In practice, the wireless signal is easy to be eavesdropped in D2D communications underlaying cellular networks, hence, ensuring a secure communication for cellular user equipments (CUEs) is an urgent and meaningful problem. In this paper, we propose a joint subcarrier and power allocation scheme for maximizing the sum data rate of D2D pairs, meanwhile protecting the CUEs against eavesdropping. Specifically, in the proposed scheme, we first quantify the security performance with the secrecy data rate, and obtain the closed-form expression for the optimal power allocation of CUEs and D2D pairs by tightening the quality of service (QoS) and secrecy rate requirement constraints of CUEs. Based on the obtained power allocation solution, by searching the optimal mapping relationship between CUEs and D2D pairs, we develop a subcarrier assignment strategy with the Hungarian algorithm to solve it, which can further enhance the sum data rate of D2D pairs. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed scheme can significantly yield better performance than other schemes.

Older adults have diversified needs often associated with particular aging scenarios. People started to use aging scenarios to provide better Smart Eldercare services and develop innovative solutions. The problem is how to manage these scenarios effectively. To our best knowledge, this study is the first to develop a model to provide a structured framework of aging scenarios for research and teaching of eldercare services. Labeling aging scenarios can facilitate their collection, classification, and consolidation within this model. This study uses the automatic labeling approach to manage and utilize aging scenarios. Under each class, there are labels with different numbers and smaller granularity to reflect the requirements in each scenario case. Since a scenario case often involves more than one label, properly labeling it becomes a multi-label text classification problem. We extend the multi-label text classification model LSAN for labeling aging scenario cases. For evaluation purposes, we collected 938 scenario cases as the dataset. Experimental results show that our proposed method can achieve an average accuracy of 61.66%, better than other classical methods. © 2022, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Vehicle re-identification (reID) aims at identifying vehicles across different non-overlapping cameras views. The existing methods heavily relied on well-labeled datasets for ideal performance, which inevitably causes fateful drop due to the severe domain bias between the training domain and the real-world scenes;worse still, these approaches required full annotations, which is labor-consuming. To tackle these challenges, we propose a novel progressive adaptation learning method for vehicle reID, named PAL, which infers from the abundant data without annotations. For PAL, a data adaptation module is employed for source domain, which generates the images with similar data distribution to unlabeled target domain as "pseudo target samples". These pseudo samples are combined with the unlabeled samples that are selected by a dynamic sampling strategy to make training faster. We further proposed a weighted label smoothing (WLS) loss, which considers the similarity between samples with different clusters to balance the confidence of pseudo labels. To the best of our knowledge, this paper is the first to apply IoT technologies to transform the popular Mahjong game into a Digital Mahjong System (DMS) for digitally performing cognitive assessments. People have started exploring digital cognitive assessment tools for better objectivity and simplification. However, most of these tools are not friendly for older adults. This paper aims to address this issue by integrating IoT technologies with Mahjong to make cognitive assessment simpler and more engaging for older adults. DMS has the following features: 1) integrating motion tracking devices into Mahjong tiles and transferring them into Digital Mahjong Tiles (DMTs), which can precisely capture their moving trajectory during the assessment, 2) using a Near Field Communication reader to configure DMT’s primary data, 3) supporting Over-The-Air Device Firmware Update that can be done remotely via Bluetooth, and 4) developing a charging base that can charge 16 DMTs simultaneously using Qi wireless charging standard. With further testing, the DMS has the potential to become a digital platform to implement and test various cognitive assessment tools integrating Mahjong elements. © 2022, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Recent developments in unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and mobile edge computing (MEC) have provided users with flexible and resilient computing services. However, meeting the computing-intensive and latency-sensitive demands of users poses a significant challenge due to the limited resources of UAVs. To address this challenge, we present a multi-objective optimization approach for multi-UAV-assisted MEC systems. First, we formulate a multi-objective optimization problem aiming at minimizing the total task completion delay, reducing the total UAV energy consumption, and maximizing the total amount of offloaded tasks by jointly optimizing task offloading, computation resource allocation, and UAV trajectory control. Since the problem is a mixed-integer non-linear programming (MINLP) and NP-hard problem which is challenging, we propose a joint task offloading, computation resource allocation, and UAV trajectory control (JTORATC) approach to solve the problem. However, since the decision variables of task offloading, computation resource allocation, and UAV trajectory control are coupled with each other, the original problem is split into three sub-problems, i.e., task offloading, computation resource allocation, and UAV trajectory control, which are solved individually to obtain the corresponding decisions. Moreover, the sub-problem of task offloading is solved by using distributed splitting and threshold rounding methods, the sub-problem of computation resource allocation is solved by adopting the Karush-Kuhn-Tucker (KKT) method, and the sub-problem of UAV trajectory control is solved by employing the successive convex approximation (SCA) method. Block-Structured Optimization for Subgraph Detection in Interdependent Networks

We propose a generalized framework for block-structured nonconvex optimization, which can be applied to structured subgraph detection in interdependent networks, such as multi-layer networks, temporal networks, networks of networks, and many others. Specifically, we design an effective, efficient, and parallelizable projection algorithm, namely Graph Block-structured Gradient Projection (GBGP), to optimize a general non-linear function subject to graph-structured constraints. We prove that our algorithm: 1) runs in nearly-linear time on the network size;2) enjoys a theoretical approximation guarantee. Moreover, we demonstrate how our framework can be applied to two very practical applications and conduct comprehensive experiments to show the effectiveness and efficiency of our proposed algorithm.
