Market Value of Innovation: An Empirical Analysis on China's Stock Market

Studies on market value of innovation investment have been based on US and European database. However, few re-searchers investigate Chinese stock market about the market value of firm's expected R&D performance. In this paper, we use constructed panel dataset from three representative stock markets in China: Main Board Market, Small and Media-sized Enterprise Board Market and Growth Enterprise Market and then use intangible assets increment as innovation indicator to examine the innovation investment-firm performance association in both manufacturing and service industries by a dataset over an 11-year period covering 1455 firms to evaluate the differences in their relative contribution to market performance. By comparing the results of these three stock markets, we find out the effect of R&D investment and increasing R&D input to market value is insignificant in all three stock markets, resulting from the weak protection for minority investors and loose regulation of information disclosure. Different constructions of intangible assets of listed firms on MBM and GEM account for market's relatively low efficiency to reflect real value of R&D investment. On industry-level, we conclude that R&D investment in both service and manufacturing sector contributes positively to market performance of firms and R&D investment in service industry shows stronger and more significant linkage to market value than manufacturing industry.

At the early stage of software lifecycle, the complexity measurement of UML class diagrams plays an important role in software development, testing and maintenance, and provides guidance for developing high quality software. In order to study which one is better, simple or complex metrics, this paper analyzes and compares four typical metrics of UML class diagrams from experimental software engineering view points. Understandability, analyzability and maintainability were classified and predicted for 27 class diagrams related to a banking system by means of algorithm C5.0 within the famous toolkit Weka. Results suggest that the performance of simple metrics is not inferior to that of complex metrics, in some cases even better than that of complex metrics.

A survey about the information needs of elderly people could find out the information required to address the needs of the aged in a community. Analyzing data collected from 600 elderly people through field investigation with a questionnaire in a rural community in central China, the results show that the preferred information format of the majority of aged people is audio and/or visual information product, especially audio product. Most of the aged people stated that they were in need of healthy and medical non-educational audio information products. The survey maybe lead to improved and expanded information services for respondents who are short of such services, including Public broadcasting services, extending the audiovisual collection, loaning audiovisuals, religious faith audiovisuals and others providing needed information to them. In summary, this paper assembles views on what the elderly people currently need to be helped by both practitioners and researchers in the elderly people services domain.

Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) are made up of tiny sensor nodes which sense the data and communicate to the base station via other nodes. These sensor nodes are inexpensive portable devices with limited processing power and energy resources which make them in need of smart clustering protocols. Many clustering and routing protocols were proposed in the literature to serve large networks of such tiny devices. In this paper, we have implemented and analyzed different clustering protocols, namely LEACH, LEACH-C, LEACH-1R, and HEED using MATLAB environment. These clustering protocols are compared in different terms such as residual energy, data delivery to the base station, maximum number of rounds and the number of live nodes. Experimental results showed a better performance of the LEACH protocols when compared to the different versions of HEED. Moreover, LEACH-1R proved to be efficient in terms of network lifetime.

Misdiagnosis of epilepsy, even by experienced clinicians, can cause exposure of patients to medical procedures and treatments with potential complications. Moreover, diagnostic delays (for 7 to 10 years on average) impose economic burden at individual and population levels. In this paper, a seizure classification framework of epileptic and non-epileptic events from multi-channel EEG data is proposed. In contrast to relevant studies found in the literature, in this study, the non-epileptic class consists of two types of paroxysmal episodes of loss of consciousness, namely the psychogenic non-epileptic seizure (PNES) and the vasovagal syncope (VVS). EEG signals are represented in the spectral-spatial-temporal domain. A tensor-based approach is employed to extract signature features to feed the classification models. TUCKER decomposition is applied to learn the essence of original, high-dimensional domain of feature space and extract a multilinear discriminative subspace. The classification models were evaluated on EEG epochs from 11 subjects in an inter-subject cross-validation setting and achieved an accuracy of 96%.

Over years, virtual backbone has attracted lots of attentions as a promising approach to deal with the broadcasting storm problem in wireless networks. One popular way to construct a quality virtual backbone is to solve the minimum connected dominating set problem. However, a virtual backbone computed in this way is not resilient against topology change since the induced graph by the connected dominating set is one-vertex-connected. As a result, the minimum k-connected m-dominating set problem is introduced to construct a fault-tolerant virtual backbone. Currently, the best known approximation algorithm for the problem in unit disk graph assumes k ≤ 3 and m ≥ 1 and its performance ratio is 280 when k = m = 3. In this paper, we use a classical result from graph theory, Tutte decomposition, to design a new approximation algorithm for the problem in unit disk graph for k ≤ 3 and m ≥ 3. In particular, the algorithm features with much simpler structure and much smaller performance ratio, e.g. nearly 66 when k = m = 3. We also conduct simulation to evaluate the performance of our algorithm.

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted gaps in health surveillance systems, disease prevention, and treatment globally. Among the many factors that might have led to these gaps is the issue of the financing of national health systems, especially in low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs), as well as a robust global system for pandemic preparedness. We aimed to provide a comparative assessment of global health spending at the onset of the pandemic;characterise the amount of development assistance for pandemic preparedness and response disbursed in the first 2 years of the COVID-19 pandemic;and examine expectations for future health spending and put into context the expected need for investment in pandemic preparedness. Methods: In this analysis of global health spending between 1990 and 2021, and prediction from 2021 to 2026, we estimated four sources of health spending: development assistance for health (DAH), government spending, out-of-pocket spending, and prepaid private spending across 204 countries and territories. We used the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD)'s Creditor Reporting System (CRS) and the WHO Global Health Expenditure database (GHED) to estimate spending. We estimated development assistance for general health, COVID-19 response, and pandemic preparedness and response using a keyword search. Health spending estimates were combined with estimates of resources needed for pandemic prevention and preparedness to analyse future health spending patterns, relative to need. Findings: In 2019, at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, US$9·2 trillion (95% uncertainty interval [UI] 9·1–9·3) was spent on health worldwide. We found great disparities in the amount of resources devoted to health, with high-income countries spending $7·3 trillion (95% UI 7·2–7·4) in 2019;293·7 times the $24·8 billion (95% UI 24·3–25·3) spent by low-income countries in 2019. Image segmentation problem is a fundamental task and process in computer vision and image processing applications. It is well known that the performance of image segmentation is mainly influenced by two factors: the segmentation approaches and the feature presentation. As for image segmentation methods, clustering algorithm is one of the most popular approaches. However, most current clustering-based segmentation methods exist some problems, such as the number of regions of image have to be given prior, the different initial cluster centers will produce different segmentation results and so on. In this paper, we present a novel image segmentation approach based on DP clustering algorithm. Compared with the current methods, our method has several improved advantages as follows: 1) This algorithm could directly give the cluster number of the image based on the decision graph; 2) The cluster centers could be identified correctly; 3) We could simply achieve the hierarchical segmentation according to the applications requirement. A lot of experiments demonstrate the validity of this novel segmentation algorithm.

This paper calculates the carbon emissions from energy consumption of 30 provinces in China through 2000-2010, and research correlation of factors such as regional economic gap and regional characteristics of carbon emissions in the process of regional economic coordinated development. The LMDI decomposition model is used to decompose the growth rate of China's carbon emissions into 4 types of driving factors, i.e. GDP, industrial pollutants emission intensity, industrial structure and imbalance of regional economic development, to analyze influence of scale effect, technical effect, industrial structure effect and regional spatial structure effect on carbon emissions in the process of China's regional economic development. The results show that: The scale effect is determinants of carbon emissions increasing. The technical effect is the most important force to inhibit the increment of carbon emissions. Industrial structure effect and regional spatial structure effect on carbon emissions are not yet stable, but have a certain pull impact on increasing carbon emissions. © (2014) Trans Tech Publications, Switzerland.

Due to the rapid growth of social net services (SNSs), research into SNSs continuance usage has recently emerged as an important issue in information systems adaption. This study develops an integrated model based on the expectation-confirmation model (ECM), the technology acceptance model (TAM), and the theory of planned behavior (TPB), and apply them into the context of older adults' continuance intention toward SNSs. The hypothesized model is validated empirically using a sample collected from 250 older adults who had prior experience with SNSs and was tested against the proposed research model using structure equation modeling. Analysis results demonstrate that satisfaction has the most significant effect on older adults' continuance intention, followed by perceived usefulness, attitude, subject norm and perceived behavioral control. The results of these findings for SNSs practitioners are discussed at the end of this work. © 2014 IEEE.
