The KES conference series has been established for almost a decade, and it cont- ues each year to attract participants from all geographical areas of the world, including Europe, the Americas, Australasia and the Paci?c Rim. The KES conferences cover a wide range of intelligent systems topics. The broad focus of the conference series is the theory and applications of intelligent systems. From a pure research ?eld, intel- gent systems have advanced to the point where their abilities have been incorporated into many business and engineering application areas. KES 2005 provided a valuable mechanism for delegates to obtain an extensive view of the latest research into a range of intelligent-systems algorithms, tools and techniques. The conference also gave de- gates the chance to come into contact with those applying intelligent systems in diverse commercial areas. The combination of theory and practice represented a unique opp- tunity to gain an appreciation of the full spectrum of leading-edge intelligent-systems activity. The papers for KES 2005 were either submitted to invited sessions, chaired and organized by respected experts in their ?elds, or to a general session, managed by an extensive International Program Committee, or to the intelligent Information Hiding and Multimedia Signal Processing (IIHMSP) Workshop, managed by an International Workshop Technical Committee.

This paper describes a vision system for extracting and recognising partially occluded 2D visual landmarks. The system is developed based on the traditional template matching approach and a memory feedback modulation (MFM) mechanism. It identifies the obscured portions and selectively enhances non-occluded areas of the landmark, while simultaneously suppressing background clutters of the bottom-up edge processed input images. The architecture has been tested with a large number of real images with varying levels of landmark concealment and further evaluated using a vision-based navigating robot in the laboratory environment. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2005.

Though the retinal image changes drastically with the movement of our head or eyes, our perceptual world is stable. It is called visual stability or position constancy. When we observe a virtual-reality environment through a head-mounted display with moving our head, the perceptual world is stabilized by the appropriate visual-motor gain without significant system delay. It is known that when the gain is changed the visual stability adaptively changes. We aimed to know the generality and specificity of this adaptation to stabilize the perceptual world: What is limitation for the ability of our adaptive visual-motor system? We found that the visual-motor adaptation occurred irrespective of the amount of visual information or active/passive movement. Even though the eye for adapting and that for test were different, the adaptation was intact. When the retinal location (left or right hemi-field) for test was different from that for adaptation, the adaptation still occurred, but it was less than in the case of same retinal location. Thus, the visual-motor adaptation for visual stability is concerned with relatively higher information processing, at least after the fusion of binocular sources, but is specific to or modulated by the retinal location.

MT19937 is a kind of Mersenne Twister, which is a pseudo-random number generator. This study presents new designs for a MT19937 circuit suitable for custom computing machinery for high-performance scientific simulations. Our designs can generate multiple random numbers per cycle (multi-port design). The estimated throughput of a 52-port design was 262 Gbps, which is 115 times higher than the software on a Pentium 4 (2.53 GHz) processor. Multi-port designs were proven to be more cost-effective than using multiple single-port designs. The initialization circuit can be included without performance loss in exchange for a slight increase of logic scale. WWW image retrieval systems can retrieve the corresponding images to the query keyword from WWW, however every system cannot retrieve suitable images with high precision. In this paper, a new WWW image retrieval system using the image knowledge database is proposed. This system can show more suitable images by filtering retrieval results of the conventional system. If the query keyword is not registered in the database, the user must select the suitable ones from image data retrieved by the conventional system, and then features of selected images are registered into the database as the supervised data. If the query keyword is the registered one, more similar images to the supervised data in the database can be indicated in the top order. The experimental results show that the average precision of this system becomes 11.6 % better than the conventional system.
