This paper introduces and formally defines a fuzzy rough object-oriented database (OODB) model based on a formal framework using an algebraic type system and formally defined constraints. This generalized model incorporates both rough set and fuzzy set uncertainty, while remaining compliant with object-oriented database standards set forth by the Object Database Management Group. It therefore better models the uncertainty of real-world enterprises than conventional databases through the use of indiscernibility and fuzzy membership values, especially those enterprises built upon spatial data.

Processing noisy structured textual data using a fuzzy matching approach: Application to postal address errors

A multiparadigm approach is developed and demonstrated for exploiting knowledge about structure for the purpose of extracting information from noisy textual data. A motivating example of a potential application would be an address encoding system for a delivery service such as UPS, Federal Express or the United States Post Office. This approach combines aspects of database organization and clustering of records, fuzzy parsing, fuzzy retrieval, an aggregation algebra, and measures of both performance and accuracy. Fuzzy retrieval, in the form of set and fuzzy operators, is accomplished by considering each symbol of the input text to be imperfect and retrieving non-exact matching records from the database that hold for a particular threshold value. The set of low-level database operators constrains the cardinality and accuracy of retrievals. A hierarchical method of clustering the database is defined, whereby the records are partitioned in a manner such that similar records are in the same cluster. This clustering strategy is guaranteed to be mutually exclusive and a complete cover of the data records. Associated with these clusters is an algebra that combines clusters of data into one window of ranked data. A set of fuzzy measures is defined that are used to aggregate and rank sets of records. © Springer-Verlag 2000.

In this paper we present a method to compute the distribution of input vectors with a standard MLP architecture. By training the network on all data vectors with a target output of "1" and an additional set of random vectors with a zero target, the network is able to approximate the local density of seen input data for any point in the input space. While densities can be computed with high precision by a number of specialized algorithms, this fast and very easy implementable method allows easily to evaluate the outputs of a network used for function approximation or classification. If networks are queried with data outside the training set, the result usually will be unpredictable. But determining if the current point lies within the reliable area is a classification problem comparable to the main problem itself. By using three parallel networks of the same type and structure it is possible to evaluate the precision and validity of predictions as well with minimal additional effort: in addition to the network used for prediction we use one to predict the absolute error and another to determine the input density as an alert signal. © 1999 IEEE.

Presents one of the software packages that we are developing for teaching electricity and electronics, the first-year subject that is common to all engineering students. This package is developed with the aim of guiding the user in developing laboratory experiments and preparing students to perform real experiments in the laboratory. The package itself represents a library of templates which is needed to develop a laboratory experiment, including a more general set of templates related to the particular engineering field and a more specific set of templates related to the particular experiment. The package also includes a set of exemplary experiments developed for the above-mentioned first-year subject The package is now in the development stage, and in this paper we presents some of the ideas that are being used to solve the problems that were faced.

Introduces an algorithm for approximating a function by means of local models. We assume that the data arrives pattern-by-pattern. The shapes and locations of receptive fields are changed in an adaptive manner. With each pattern, not only are the model equations updated but also the regions for which each model contributes significantly to the forecast. This error-dependent step is based on competition: models with worse forecasts in the long term retire in favour of superior models. Areas with higher errors attract models, so there is a tendency to balance local errors. We assume that the distribution of input vectors is known, and therefore we use a fixed number of models, distributed randomly according to the known distribution during the initialisation phase. Although our algorithm was developed in the framework of continuous learning, an even better performance can be achieved by presenting the patterns repeatedly. The learning capabilities are demonstrated by means of an example. © 1999 IEEE.

In this paper we present an incremental construction algorithm for continuous learning tasks and one of its special features-simultaneous learning of the target function and a confidence value for the system predictions. The basis of the hybrid system is a radial basis function (RBF) network layer. The second layer consists of local models. The two layers are closely combined with a strong interaction. The number of RBF-neurons and the number of local models have not to be determined in advance. This is one of the main advantages of the algorithm. Another advantage emphasized in this paper is the ability to learn the training data distribution simultaneously to the learning of the target function. The learned data set distribution can be used as a confidence value for a given network prediction. The development of the described approach is embedded in a larger project that is primarily concerned with system identification tasks for industrial control such as steel processing. © 1999 IEEE.

Real-time wireless video transfer for mobile computing is an exciting new research area, with prototype systems becoming possible, due in particular to emerging video compression techniques and improved digital wireless products. This paper presents an overview of the technological issues associated with short-range (2-5 m) wireless video transfer for multiple (transmitter/receiver links) mobile users in varying environments, in particular the multi-access and video compression techniques. It also proposes a prototype system that could be used to evaluate aspects of the proposed system and compare them with newly developed technologies.

A previously formulated [A. Bouzerdoum, D. Filippidis, and V. Purl, 1998) forward-observer (FO) decision-making (DM) model is generalized using global mathematical analysis, optimized (physically and physiologically) and integrated using a computer algebra system (CAS) for application into live training and combat operation (CO). The global geometro-dynamical FO analysis includes: designing the phase-space manifold of the FO's action, the FO's DM system, CO dynamics as visualized by the FO, an integrated FO's DM-CO project, and the problem of chaos in the global DM-CO project. The FO's CAS contains active Mathematica notebooks for the evaluation and simulation of equations formulated in the global mathematical analysis. This includes three original packages: DM-CAS (applied for prediction of the fraction of casualties), CO simulation, and integrated DM-CO simulation.

In this paper, the problem of the objective evaluation of trainee performance from simulators, and the subsequent prediction of the trainee's competency, is solved in two ways: (i) using a linear factor structure and linear factor dynamics, in the case of large samples of trainees and simulator tests, and (ii) using a nonlinear Hopfield overlap-based structure and nonlinear overlap dynamics, in the case of small samples of trainees and simulator tests.

Data mining and knowledge representation processes are explored for use in pre-processing data for an evaluation system. The RAN (Royal Australian Navy) Bridge Simulator provides the evaluation environment. Both performance grading and biological measures are analysed and processed to provide a basic level of knowledge representation. These knowledge fragments can then be passed to an evaluation system.
