This paper proposes a novel bio-inspired termite queen algorithm (TQA) to solve optimization problems by simulating the division of labor in termite populations under a queen’s rule. TQA is benchmarked on a set of 23 functions to test its performance at solving global optimization problems, and applied to six real-world engineering design problems to verify its reliability and effectiveness. Comparative simulation studies with other algorithms are conducted, from whose results it is observed that TQA satisfactorily solves global optimization problems and engineering design problems.

Drawing support from an effective Medical Image Segmentation (MIS) is conducive to a substantial diagnostic basis for the physicians to identify the focus lesion in the patient body and give the subsequent clinical assessment of the patient status. Although various works have tried the challenging quantitative analysis problem, it is still difficult to conduct precise automatic segmentation, especially the soft tissue organs. In this decade, with the increased amount of available datasets, deep learning-based networks have achieved remarkable performance in image processing. Inspired by the state-of-the-art deep learning works, in this paper, we propose an end-to-end multi-layer network named RCGA-Net. It consists of an encoder-decoder backbone that integrates a coordinate attention mechanism based on space and channel and a global context extraction module to highlight more valuable information. To evaluate the performance of RCGA-Net, we apply it to different kinds of clinical and experimental MIS tasks to testify its generalization ability. Extensive experiments represent that our schema has taken the outperform or compatible results among the comparison methods group. Specifically, the numeric result of RCGA-Net on the pulmonary dataset has achieved a 99.12% optimum F1-score.

OBJECTIVE This umbrella review aims to determine if clear aligners promote cytotoxic and estrogenic effects. METHODOLOGY The review was conducted in conformity with the PRISMA statement. A systematic search was carried out in March of 2025 in 5 databases (Medline through PubMed, Web of Science (all databases), Cochrane Library, Embase, and Epistemonikos). All systematic reviews (SRs) that reported the cytotoxicity and/or estrogenicity of orthodontic aligners were included. The quality of the included studies was evaluated using AMSTAR-2 and the degree of overlap was analysed using CCA. RESULTS The literature search resulted in 394 articles. Screening by title and abstract, resulted in 13 articles for full reading, and 4 articles were included in the umbrella review. According to the AMSTAR-2, all reviews were of low quality. The degree of overlap among SRs is high. DISCUSSION The included SRs indicate that aligners do not have significant estrogenic/cytotoxic capacity and, even in cases of BPA leaching, this occurs at levels well below what is considered toxic. The low quality, high risk of bias, considerable overlap, and significant heterogeneity among the included studies impacts the obtained results. CONCLUSION It is not possible to affirm or refute the presence of estrogenic or cytotoxic effects or the leaching of monomers such as BPA. In the future, it is recommended that studies adopt a more detailed and prolonged analysis of BPA leaching and it is necessary to carry out clinical studies that evaluate the safety and biocompatibility of orthodontic aligners.

Over the past 25 years, multiple different data models have been introduced to standardize information management and facilitate data exchange and integration in the aviation domain. As a next step in the evolution of aviation data management, ontologies capturing the semantics (concepts, properties, and relationships) have been produced based on those models. In this paper, we describe a study comparing two recently released and independently-developed complex ontologies focused on Air Traffic Management (ATM) - the NASA ATM Ontology and an ontology derived from the ATM Information Reference Model. We develop a methodology for manually comparing two ontologies and identifying what we describe as exact, light, and mismatches between concepts in the two ontologies. We also describe a classification scheme that characterizes mismatches in terms of the general reason for the mismatch. This approach can be applied to improve existing ATM ontologies and foster interoperability, which will benefit aviation stakeholders.

Optimization algorithms appear in the core calculations of numerous Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning methods, as well as engineering and Business applications. Following recent works on the theoretical deficiencies of AI, a rigor context for the optimization problem of a black-box objective function is developed. The algorithm stems directly from the theory of probability, instead of a presumed inspiration, thus the convergence properties of the proposed methodology are inherently stable. In particular, the proposed optimizer utilizes an algorithmic implementation of the n-dimensional inverse transform sampling as a search strategy. No control parameters are required to be tuned, and the trade-off among exploration and exploitation is by definition satisfied. A theoretical proof is provided, concluding that only falling into the proposed framework, either directly or incidentally, any optimization algorithm converges in the fastest possible time. The numerical experiments, verify the theoretical results on the efficacy of the algorithm apropos reaching the optimum, as fast as possible. © 2019, CC BY.

Cancer staging, grading and subtyping all represent important problems for precision diagnosis, treatment and mechanistic studies of cancer. The majority of the existing computational methods solve this problem via multi-classification of differential gene-expressions of cancer samples of specific classes (Stages, Grades and subtypes) vs. controls. However, the performance of such classification techniques is generally not satisfactory since the discerning power of differential expression patterns in such classifications is limited. We present here a multi-classification technique, based on co-expression patterns specific to individual subclasses in provided training data as co-expression patterns tend to be more conserved than differential expressions within each subclass. A challenge in implementing this strategy lies in how to effectively derive co-expression patterns in individual samples, which is solved through comparing co-expression patterns within a subclass and those in the subclass plus a new sample. Compared with the state-of-the-art gene expression-based classification methods, our method outperforms them in cancer staging, grading and subtyping of cancer samples from TCGA in almost all the measures used. In addition, the co-expressed genes computationally selected for classifications are biologically meaningful, which will prove important for diagnostic biomarker design, treatment plan selection and possibly mechanistic studies of cancer.

In this paper, we investigate a privacy preservation design in the distributed nonsmooth convex optimization with set constraints. To solve the distributed optimization problem while preserving the privacy, we use pseudo-subgradients involved with（non-integrable） set-valued functions. based on pseudo-subgradients, we propose distributed nonsmooth optimization algorithms with keeping subgradient information confidential. Then we prove the correctness and convergence of the distributed privacy preservation optimization algorithms to achieve the exact solution of the original optimization problem.

—Segmentation of abdominal organs has been a comprehensive, yet unresolved, research field for many years. In the last decade, intensive developments in deep learning (DL) have introduced new state-of-the-art segmentation systems. Despite outperforming the overall accuracy of existing systems, the effects of DL model properties and parameters on the performance is hard to interpret. This makes comparative analysis a necessary tool to achieve explainable studies and systems. Moreover, the performance of DL for emerging learning approaches such as cross-modality and multi-modal tasks have been rarely discussed. In order to expand the knowledge in these topics, CHAOS – Combined (CT-MR) Healthy Abdominal Organ Segmentation challenge has been organized in the IEEE International Symposium on Biomedical Imaging (ISBI), 2019, in Venice, Italy. Despite a large number of the previous abdomen related challenges, the majority of which are focused on tumor/lesion detection and/or classification with a single modality, CHAOS providesboth abdominal CT and MR data from healthy subjects. Five different and complementary tasks have been designed to analyze the capabilities of the current approaches from multiple perspectives. The results are investigated thoroughly, compared with manual annotations and interactive methods. The outcomes are reported in detail to reflect the latest advancements in the field. CHAOS challenge and data will be available online to provide a continuous benchmark resource for segmentation. Copyright © 2020, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Randomized neural network (RNN) is a highly feasible solution in the era of big data because it offers a simple and fast working principle in processing dynamic and evolving data streams. This paper proposes a novel RNN, namely recurrent type-2 random vector functional link network (RT2McRVFLN), which provides a highly scalable solution for data streams in a strictly online and integrated framework. It is built upon the psychologically inspired concept of metacognitive learning, which covers three basic components of human learning: what-to-learn, how-to-learn, and when-to-learn. The what-to-learn selects important samples on the fly with the use of online active learning scenario, which renders our algorithm an online semi-supervised algorithm. The how-to-learn process combines an open structure of evolving concept and a randomized learning algorithm of random vector functional link network (RVFLN). The efficacy of the RT2McRVFLN has been numerically validated through two real-world case studies and comparisons with its counterparts, which arrive at a conclusive finding that our algorithm delivers a tradeoff between accuracy and simplicity.
