Recommendation systems offer the most similar point cases to a target query. Among those cases similar to the query, some may be similar and others dissimilar to each other. Offering only the most similar cases wrt. the query leads to the well known problem that the customers may have only a few number of choices. To address the problem of offering a diverse set of cases, several approaches have been proposed. In a different line of CBR research, the concept of generalized cases has been systematically studied, which can be applied to represent parameterizable products. First approaches to retrieving the most similar point cases from a case base of generalized cases have been proposed. However, until now no algorithm is known to retrieve a diverse set of point cases from a case base of generalized cases. This is the topic of this paper. We present a new branch and bound method to build a retrieval set of point cases such that its diversity is sufficient and each case in the retrieval set is a representative for a set of similar point cases. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2003.

In this paper we show how personalization techniques from the area of adaptive hypermedia can be achieved in the semantic web. Our approach is based on rule-based reasoning enabled by semantic web technologies. The personalization techniques are formalized as reasoning rules. The rules are able to reason over distributed information resources annotated with semantic web metadata formats. This leads towards the realization of an adaptive semantic web idea which provides personalized, adaptive access to information, services, or other, distributed resources. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2003.

A fundamental task in multi-agent systems is matchmaking, which is to retrieve and classify service descriptions of agents that (best) match a given service request. Several approaches to matchmaking have been proposed so far, which involve computation of distances between service offers and service requests that are both provided as aggregates of the same set of attributes which have atomic values. In this paper, we consider the problem of matchmaking in the setting where both service offers and requests are described in a richer language, which has complex types built from basic types using constructors such as sets, lists, or record aggregation. We investigate methods for computing distance values of complex objects, based on a generic combination of distance values of the object components, as well as domain-dependent distance functions. The methods have been implemented in Grappa, the Generic Request Architecture for Passive Provider Agents, which is a framework for developing open matchmaking facilities that can handle complex objects described in XML. Using Grappa, a large scale application has been built in the Human Resource Network project of the Office for Labor Exchange of the German government, in which job offerings have to be matched against a large database of unemployed persons and qualified candidates should be retrieved. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2001.

The recombination operator plays a very important role in genetic algorithms. We present binary coded genetic algorithms in which more than two parents are involved in the recombination operation. We propose two types of multi-parent recombination operators, the multi-cut (MX) and seed crossover (SX). Each of these operators is a natural generalization of two parents recombination operator. These operators are evaluated on the De Jong standard test functions. The results showed clearly that the multi-parent recombinations lead to better performance, although the performance improvement for different techniques were found to be dependent on problems.

A large number of studies on genetic algorithms (GAs) emphasize finding a globally optimal solution. Some other investigations have also been made for detecting multiple solutions. If a global optimal solution is very sensitive to noise or perturbations in the environment then there may be cases where it is not good to use this solution. We have proposed a new scheme, GA/RS/sup 3/, which extends the application of GAs to domains that require the discovery of robust solutions and a mathematical model for this scheme has been developed restricting their search space to one-dimensional. We analyze properties of GAs/RS/sup 3/ in multi-dimension search spaces. The effectiveness of the scheme is demonstrated by solving two-dimensional functions having broad and sharp peaks.

An ability of adjusting the AND/OR operators is discussed in this paper to overcome the drawback of fuzzy ID3. The fuzzy ID3 has a mechanism to construct fuzzy rules. However, the fuzzy ID3 has a couple of problems, i.e., a lack of representation and an adjusting problem. In our fuzzy ID3, AND/OR operators are formulated using t-norm and t-conorm connectives with parameters and each parameter is adjusted using the golden section method. By using the golden section method, the proposed fuzzy ID3 gives accurate fuzzy rules. If the t-conorm connective is selected as AND/OR operator in the adjusting stage, the decision tree has more flexible representation.

A Tanker Navigation Safety System

TNSS is a ship-board risk management system capable of route planning and decision support based upon a knowledge database. The objective of the project was to provide timely risk assessment information to a mariner or decision-maker in a system capable of integration with existing ECDIS or shipboard PC systems. The historical information was to include: accident location frequency and type ice wind visibility environmental sensitivity and other factors. The specifications of the TNSS prototype were expanded so that risk could be assessed for each track in a route plan by applying a predictive accident model patterned after the navigation and collision avoidance process.

Electronic Data Interchange: Does Its Adoption Change Purchasing Policies and Procedures?

Anecdotal evidence suggests that electronic data interchange (EDI) is being used increasingly by companies, particularly to facilitate purchasing transactions. As this trend continues, one of the issues facing managers is understanding what effect adoption of the new technology will have on the organization as a whole, and on the purchasing department in particular. The results of this study, based on a survey of 122 purchasing managers, indicate that the impact of EDI is moderated by the volume of transactions using EDI. Its adoption requires somewhat different skills and training for buyers, and it also changes some aspects of a firm's relationship with its suppliers. The Barclaycard Fraudwatch knowledge-based system identifies potentially fraudulent transactions on Visa and Mastercard credit cards. It makes use of two generic tasks, Select and Assess. Select reduces the number of transactions to be considered from about one million to about fifty thousand. Assess further processes these fifty thousand to arrive at a set of about four hundred accounts, which are output to fraud operations staff for further action. Of these four hundred, about fifteen will eventually turn out to be fraudulent. Fraudwatch was developed by Touche Ross and Barclays, using the KADS method for knowledge-based system development. It is fully embedded within the Barclaycard suite of business and cardholder programs running on IBM mainframes. Select is largely written in COBOL, Assess is written in knowledgeTool™, and the peripherals and communications are written in JCL. Fraudwatch runs daily in batch mode. It saves about thirty percent of pre-status fraud losses on the products to which it is applied. An initial implementation went live in November 1990. The system has undergone two cycles of knowledge maintenance, in order to adapt performance to organisational changes and changes in business objectives, and to enhance overall performance. Further systems and enhancements are planned during 1992 and 1993, which are intended to deploy Fraudwatch at earlier stages of transaction processing and to look at devolving processing. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 1992.

A key feature of the KADS method for knowledge-based system development is the concept of a library of reusable generic models of expertise which are used to bootstrap and guide the analysis process. These are accompanied by a set of generic design frameworks which can be used as a starting point for the design process. This paper describes how the analysis and design components relating to the KADS assessment model, originally used in the domain of credit card fraud detection (the Fraudwatch system), have been successfully reused in the domain of share application fraud detection (the TRAP system). © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 1992.
