Next generation integral safety systems are expected to provide better protection against traffic accidents by interlinking sensors and actuators of active and passive safety. A series of advanced functions will be used to mitigate collisions and if they cannot be avoided they will at least reduce their severity. We explore the interplay between key technology areas towards a holistic approach in the design and decision support of integral safety systems. First, we refer to the main problems in the design of effective systems and the associated software engineering challenges. Recent advances in sensor data analytics are then explored and their integration with decision support for vehicle control is examined. Finally, we envision that rigorous design techniques based on models for human-machine interaction are essential for achieving adequate performance and robustness of integral safety systems. © 2013 IFAC.

Change management (CM) is the major challenge of the strategic management particularly due to dynamics of knowledge assets (i.e. Temporal knowledge transformation) and also inadequate or insufficient use of knowledge, competencies and human creativities. In this context, CM needs to utilize knowledge management (KM) to guarantee successful implementation of the change and also to sustain long-term organizational advantages (e.g. Time to market and Return on Investment). Such co-operation needs to comprehensively consider internal factors to organizational success as well as external (e.g. Customers). Moreover measuring and evaluating the co-operation foreground the essence of integrating feedback loop into the framework to empower CM and assure the success of KM activities. In this paper, a formerly developed model, IQMP, is customized and adapted to support CM. The IQMP provides a comprehensive framework to deploy Performance Quality Indicators (PQIs) and a knowledge based analysis of feedback. Finally the paper discusses conception and potential application of the inherited model, Dynamic knowledge Assets management (DKAM).

Managers of enterprises concern with a major challenge for optimal management of human resources based on availability of domain experts and highly qualified personnel. The process of allocating right people to the right positions in a right time is a key to success. To achieve this goal, managers need to deploy evaluation tools integrated with the gap analysis method. This paper presents the concept and implementation details of an in-house developed software tool for competence evaluation of domain specific competencies and selection of professionals. A generic mathematical representation of competences in this project makes the software tool applied in a wide variety of organizations. A standard competence model has been first defined in this project with 5 main competence categories and related sub-categories including over 70 competence questionnaires in different managerial and employee levels. Test and evaluation of the software have been carried out by initializing the lab data of over 50 candidates with student groups involved in the project at the institute of knowledge based systems and knowledge management, University of Siegen. The paper reflects the conception and the outcomes of the implementation of the software tool. The ultimate objective of this interdisciplinary project is to fill the gap in the selection process by means of an efficient and practical competency evaluation tool. The generic software tool is aimed to be used as a component in research and industrial projects of the institute.

In this paper we propose a novel part-based method for the extraction of text touching graphic components. The Speeded Up Robust Features (SURF) are used to localize the text components and distinguish them from graphics. We introduce several post-processing steps to finally detect the text. We have tested our method on a publicly available data set of architectural floor plans and on real geographical maps. On floor plans we have located more than 95% of the text components which were not identified as text beforehand because they were touching graphic components. © 2012 IEEE.

This paper presents an automatic system for analyzing and labeling architectural floor plans. In order to detect the locations of the rooms, the proposed systems extracts both, structural and semantic information from given floor plans. Furthermore, OCR is applied on the text layer to retrieve the meaningful room labeling. Finally, a novel post-processing is proposed to split rooms into several sub-regions if several semantic rooms share the same physical room. Our fully automatic system is evaluated on a publicly available dataset of architectural floor plans. In our experiments, we could clearly outperform other state-of-the-art approaches for room detection. © 2012 IEEE.

In this paper we propose KOIOS++, which automatically processes natural language queries provided by handwritten input. The system integrates several recent achievements in the area of handwriting recognition, natural language processing, information retrieval, and human computer interaction. It uses a knowledge base described by the resource description framework (RDF). Our generic approach first generates a lexicon as background information for the handwritten text recognition. After recognizing a handwritten query, several output hypotheses are sent to a natural language processing system in order to generate a structured query (SPARQL query). Subsequently, the query is applied to the given knowledge base and a result graph visualizes the retrieved information. At all stages, the user can easily adjust the intermediate results if there is any undesired outcome. The system is implemented as a web-service and therefore works for handwritten input on digital paper as well as on input on Pen-enabled interactive surfaces. Furthermore, we build on the generic RDF-representation of semantic knowledge which is also used by the linked open data (LOD) initiative. As such, our system works well in various scenarios. We have implemented prototypes for querying company knowledge bases, the DBPedia1, the DBLP computer science bibliography2, and a knowledge base of the DAS 2012. © 2012 IEEE.

At present, product lifecycle data is provided, used, and archived only for very specific purposes. Textual data generated in product use can be very comprehensive and contain valuable information beyond its original purpose, e.g. for product development or improvement. This kind of information, however, is not fed back systematically, as its evaluation is currently not possible due to a lack of suitable methods and tools in product development. The paper in hand presents a concept designed to support product developers by introducing maintenance, service, and customer data, which has undergone restructuring into textual form in the product use phase, into product development. To process the restructured textual data, customized text mining methods are generated as a part of knowledge management in product development. These methods aim at identifying products, product generations, and failure descriptions, as well as the relationships among them. The knowledge gained through text mining is visualized in the work environment familiar to the product developer, and implements utilitarian visualization methods. Visualization is integrated into existing IT systems and provides knowledge required for product improvement or development in a target-oriented way. This extension to knowledge-based product development facilitates more efficient improvement of current and future products. © 2012 ACM.
