Examination of an independently actuated multi-air pad mattress for preventing pressure ulcers

This study examined the structure of an independently actuated multi-air pad mattress for preventing pressure ulcers, owing to lower body pressure, in specific locations of the body where pressure sores can occur. The contributions of this study are as follows: 1) The parameters were derived and simulations were performed to design air pad units of different sizes with similar heights. 2) The mattress was manufactured by examining the bending of the folding bed, with 36 air pads and three different sizes. 3) Each air pad was independently controlled to inflate, contract, and retain to reduce the pressure on specific body positions. 4) Finally, using the fabricated prototype, the proposed designs were experimentally verified. © ICROS 2021.

This study proposes a conversational social robot with a drawing journal activity that can express children's subjective and honest thoughts and emotions through drawing. The robot leads to conversation during the drawing activity and can detect the child's emotion by analyzing the children's utterance explaining the picture they drew. The children's emotions were classified as one of four emotions which are anger, happiness, sadness and neutral through a BERT-based emotion detecting model. The suitability and readiness of the proposed conversational robot with a drawing activity were then validated by the group of experts in the field of child education.

This study investigates the impact of active listening and mirroring behaviors on intimacy and trust in human-robot interaction. Based on the principles of effective human communication, active listening and mirroring were adapted for robotic systems to enhance relationship dynamics like intimacy, negative attitudes, and trust. The experimental setup involved a social robot to exhibit non-verbal cues that aligned with active listening and mirroring during interactions in the cooking scenario. The participants experienced two conditions: active listening and active listening with mirroring. The results indicated that the combination of active listening with mirroring significantly enhances intimacy and perceived trust compared to active listening only, while there is no significant difference in reducing negative attitudes. These findings suggest that incorporating non-verbal cues can substantially improve engagement in human-robot interactions, making robots more relatable and trustworthy companions.

The edge grinding process refers to the process of polishing the edge of the wafer during the wafer manufacturing process. Visual inspection and rule-based vision inspection are used to detect defective conditions after the process. In the case of visual inspection, the detection rate of defects are different depending on the skill level of the operator, so the defect classification results may be inconsistent. When the rule-based method is used, defects may not be detected or may be over-detected. To solve this problem, this paper is proposed a method to develop an automated system for the grinding process through vision inspection using deep learning. The proposed method is expected to strengthen responses to low productivity and quality problems and improve the competitiveness of the semiconductor industry. Recently, the demand for automation equipment is increasing due to the growth of semiconductor wafer factories, and the methodology proposed in this paper is expected to make a positive contribution to this trend.

This paper provides a practical solution for robot manipulators that include nonlinearities and uncertainties. The proposed controller consists of three parts: the time-delay estimation (TDE) term to generate the estimated value of complex robot dynamics effectively;a Fuzzy inference system (FIS) term to compensate for the discrepancy between the actual model and its estimate;the equivalent control term to assign the equation of motion. Compared with existing TDE-based control approaches, the new contribution lies in the FIS, which improves tracking accuracy and eliminates inappropriate control input chattering by using the sigmoid membership functions and simple rules. In addition to that, since the FIS in the proposed method has a simple structure and does not require a lot of rules designed by heuristic procedures, the practical implementation is as simple as the previous TDE-based method without the FIS. The merit of the proposed technique has been verified with simulations. © 2021 ICROS.

Nano Aerial Vehicles have become widely used for a variety of complex missions due to their mobility and the ability to access hard-to-reach areas. In most cases, these tasks require the vehicles to land on ground targets or perch on platforms mounted on diverse surfaces. Considering the surface the vehicle will reach, controlling perching is obviously a challenging task. Besides, the reliability of target position and direction estimation has a significant impact on perching performance. In this paper, a multi-sensor-based target pose estimation for autonomous precision perching of nano drones is proposed. First, the perching target, a cube cage containing a small marker inside a larger one, is designed to enhance pose estimation capability at a wide range of distances. Second, we constructed a nano drone with an upward monocular camera and a 5-direction multi-ranger deck. Next, the flying vehicle's pose toward the perching target is calculated, followed by a Kalman filter for filtering and estimating the missing data. Finally, we introduced an algorithm to merge the pose data from multiple sensors when drones approach close to the target. Real measurements are conducted on the testbed. The experimental results demonstrated the utility and potential of the adopted approach with millimeter-level precision. © 2022 ICROS.

Auditory attention decoding (AAD) has been developed to detect the attended speech using electroencephalography. Recently, a real-time AAD method using linear decoder model has been introduced lead to expand the application of AAD in terms of auditory brain computer interface. However, people focus on sounds of varying volumes in everyday conversation, so the question of whether AAD is possible in various sound stimuli arises. The present study aimed to investigate the effect of the difference in volume between two competing speech in a dichotic listening paradigm for online AAD. Most comfortable level (MCL) and dichotic speech recognition threshold (SRT) were evaluated. And the 'Sound level for Speech intelligibility (SI) of 90%' and 'Sound Level for SI 50%' were also calculated. In online AAD task, four different sound level (MCL, MCL-20dBA, Sound level for SI of 90% and SI 50%) were introduced as attended speech, while the sound level of ignored speeches was fixed at the MCL. There was no difference in AAD performance based on the four sound levels conditions. In addition, volume difference was not significantly correlated with the individual decoder accuracy. This preliminary study identified that lowering attended speech volume to SRT level had no effect on AAD. © ICA *** rights reserved

With the development of industry and technology in modern society, many industries and houses require a sufficient electricity supply. As demand for electricity increases, rapid detection of the type and location of electrical faults within the power system is critical to ensure the reliable operation of power systems. Since the traditional fault detection method has low accuracy and takes much time to detect the fault type and location, we propose a new electrical fault detection model based on machine learning algorithms. MATLAB Simulink collects the line current and bus voltage data during power system fault events. We consider two machine learning algorithms, Random Forest and K-Nearest Neighbor (K-NN) algorithms, as electrical fault detection and classification models. The data collected from the power system simulation is processed in various ways and then applied to the machine learning algorithms. As a result, we verify that the learning model based on the Random Forest algorithms, using the peak-to-peak value of the line current and bus voltage as training data, shows the best performance for detecting and predicting electrical faults.

This paper proposes an assistant robot arm with gravity compensation using spring and electric actuator for indirect live-line works. To design this robot arm, which is equipped with a gravity compensation that can compensate for the necessary torque required to support the smart stick during indirect live line work and the required torque in the horizontal, vertical, tilt direction that varies depending on the operator's working space is analyzed. The robot arm is designed and manufactured. Finally simulation and experiment results are presented to show the effectiveness of robot arm.

Scuba diving is a common aquatic leisure sport that many individuals enjoy in the sea. With the increasing number of people participating, there is a corresponding rise in related incidents and accidents. Typically, such events are caused by inadequate user proficiency with equipment, sudden onset of physical symptoms, failure to respond to external obstacles, and equipment malfunctions. As interest in scuba diving grows, the development of diver safety equipment that enhances convenience and usability through the interaction between divers and equipment is crucial, not only to assist underwater activities but also to preemptively prevent accidents. This paper explores the analysis of divers' physiological conditions and diver equipment evaluation criteria. Building upon this, it proposes a HRI(Human-robot Interaction) evaluation system to facilitate the research and development of safety equipment for secure scuba diving operations.
