Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS) have emerged as a transformative technology for shaping the propagation environment in next-generation mobile communication systems, creating the need for efficient optimization strategies. In this context, this paper introduces a gradient-based algorithm for jointly optimizing beamforming and reflection design in RIS-assisted multi-user (MU) multiple-input single-output (MISO) systems. The proposed approach addresses the sum-rate capacity maximization problem while significantly reducing computational complexity. To achieve this, the optimization problem is reformulated by using eigenvalue minimization, thereby reducing computational burden. This reformulation reduces computational demands without compromising the sum-rate performance. The proposed algorithm incorporates both steepest descent and the damped quasi-Newton Broyden–Fletcher–Goldfarb–Shanno (BFGS) approximation, enabling flexible trade-offs between computational efficiency and convergence rate. Simulation results confirm the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm in enhancing the sum-rate capacity. © 2025, The Authors. All rights reserved.

This paper presents a new adaptive algorithm for joint beamforming and antenna selection in mobile communication systems. Such an algorithm is of particular interest for massive multiple-input multiple-output (mMIMO) antenna systems along with limited number of available radio-frequency chains. The proposed algorithm is based on introducing an 0-norm constraint to an established adaptive-projection beamforming optimization scheme. In doing so, a real-time beamforming optimization can be carried out, resulting in a beamforming vector that tends to be sparse. The higher-magnitude elements of such a vector point out to the antenna-array elements that have the largest contribution to the output signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR). Consequently, an effective antenna selection can be achieved directly by considering the magnitude of the beamforming coefficients. Simulation results confirm the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm in enhancing the output SINR. © 2022 Elsevier Inc.

Despite the growing availability of high-capacity computational platforms, implementation complexity still has been a great concern for the real-world deployment of neural networks. This concern is not exclusively due to the huge costs of state-of-the-art network architectures, but also due to the recent push towards edge intelligence and the use of neural networks in embedded applications. In this context, network compression techniques have been gaining interest due to their ability for reducing deployment costs while keeping inference accuracy at satisfactory levels. The present paper is dedicated to the development of a novel compression scheme for neural networks. To this end, a new form of 0-norm-based regularization is firstly developed, which is capable of inducing strong sparseness in the network during training. Then, targeting the smaller weights of the trained network with pruning techniques, smaller yet highly effective networks can be obtained. The proposed compression scheme also involves the use of 2-norm regularization to avoid overfitting as well as fine tuning to improve the performance of the pruned network. Experimental results are presented aiming to show the effectiveness of the proposed scheme as well as to make comparisons with competing approaches. Copyright © 2021, The Authors. The Elo algorithm, renowned for its simplicity, is widely used for rating in sports tournaments and other applications. However, despite its widespread use, a detailed understanding of the convergence characteristics of the Elo algorithm is still lacking. Aiming to fill this gap, this paper presents a comprehensive (stochastic) analysis of the Elo algorithm, considering round-robin tournaments. Specifically, analytical expressions are derived describing the evolution of the skills and performance metrics. Then, taking into account the relationship between the behavior of the algorithm and the step-size value, which is a hyperparameter that can be controlled, design guidelines and discussions about the performance of the algorithm are provided. Experimental results are shown confirming the accuracy of the analysis and illustrating the applicability of the theoretical findings using real-world data obtained from SuperLega, the Italian volleyball league. © 2022, CC BY-NC-ND.

This paper presents a novel reduced-rank approach for implementing Volterra filters with reduced complexity. Such an approach is based on the application of the singular value decomposition to a new form of coefficient matrix obtained by exploiting the representation based on diagonal coordinates of the Volterra kernels. The result is a parallel structure of extended Hammerstein models in which each branch is related to one of the singular values of the coefficient matrix. Then, removing the branches related to the smallest singular values, an effective reduced-complexity Volterra implementation is obtained. Simulation results are presented to confirm the effectiveness of the proposed approach. © 2016 IEEE.

This paper presents a new blind beamforming algorithm for antenna arrays of direct-sequence code-division multiple-access (DSSS-CDMA) systems. The aim of such an algorithm is to enhance the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) of the received signal by using only the signals available at the CDMA correlators. In this context, a novel formulation for the optimization problem usually considered for developing this type of beamforming algorithm is first introduced. Then, the gradient method is used to solve such optimization problem in real time, resulting in the proposed beamforming algorithm. As compared with the other algorithms available in the open literature, the proposed one leads to a better tradeoff between the amplification of the signal of interest and attenuation of the interferences, which in turn improves the SINR of the received signal. Numerical simulation results are presented aiming to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm. © 2014 IEEE.

This paper presents a simplified method for determination of filter functions with simultaneous magnitude and phase specifications. For such, the approximation functions that attend magnitude requirements are cascaded with second-order equalizing steps, improving phase linearity. The equalizing steps are obtained through an optimization process in which convergence is achieved in all cases, from a new proposed strategy for determining initial conditions. Several examples are presented, confirming the validity of the proposed strategy and indicating that the best solution in terms of the total order of the system should be obtained from the study of each particular case. The equalization program used in this work is available for download. © 2013 IEEE.

This paper is devoted to the analysis of the convergence and stability of adaptive Hammerstein filters using the normalized least-mean-square (NLMS) algorithm. Such an analysis provides a new perspective on the update process of Hammerstein filters by focusing on the simultaneous update of the two cascaded structures (nonlinearity and linear filter) composing these filters. In this context, it is shown that the impact of the simultaneous update, which is often overlooked in the open literature, is of fundamental importance for choosing the adaptive algorithm parameters and, thus, to ensure the algorithm stability and obtain faster convergence. Simulation results confirm the effectiveness of the design guidelines obtained using the proposed analysis approach. © 2013 University of Trieste and University of Zagreb.
