A wideband black-box model is proposed to represent the transient response of an inductive voltage transformer used in 15-kV class distribution systems in Brazil. The proposed model is used to evaluate the surge transfer characteristics of the voltage transformer considering different loads for the application of a step-like impulse voltage at primary side. The model is built as a Norton-type equivalent circuit that is valid from 10 Hz to 10 MHz. It is demonstrated that the model is able to accurately reproduce the transient waveforms measured at the transformer secondary side for the application of impulse voltages at the primary side in all tested cases. © 2023 IEEE.

This work evaluates the influence of considering correlation expressions between peak current and current front time of negative first return strokes on the assessment of the lightning performance of transmission lines in terms of backflashover occurrence. The analyses were performed considering computational simulations with the Hybrid Electromagnetic model and the integration method for transmission lines of voltage level of 230 kV and 500 kV. The results confirmed the estimation of higher critical currents when assuming the correlation expressions in relation to the use of the median current front time, though this difference does not impact significantly the resulting lightning performance. The larger differences occurred for those cases with probability of backflashover of the order of 1 % and lower. Also, the results indicated that the use of correlation expressions may lead to critical currents larger than 200 kA, which extrapolates significantly the available data of measured negative first stroke currents in instrumented towers. For these cases, truncating the analyses to a 200-kA critical current would lead to results in terms of backflashover probability compatible to those considering the median current front time. © 2023 IEEE.

This work proposes a calculation procedure of the Monte Carlo method applied for assessing the lightning performance of transmission lines (TLs) based on the traditional and well-known concept of critical current, defined as the minimum lightning peak current that leads TLs insulators to flashover, and in the novel concept here presented and designated as the anti-critical current, considered as the maximum lightning peak current that does not lead TLs insulators to flashover. The proposed procedure provided a significant reduction of the number of ATP simulations demanded by the Monte Carlo method since it just calls the ATP simulation if the following condition is achieved: Ianti-C © 2024 IEEE, © VDE VERLAG GMBH ∙ Berlin ∙ Offenbach.

A discussion on the choice of current wavefront parameters to be applied on calculation procedures for the assessment of the lightning performance of transmission lines in terms of backflashover is presented, considering computational simulations with the CIGRE concave waveform and two distinct approaches: (i) the correlation among peak current, front time and maximum steepness, and (ii) front time assumed as an independent and constant parameter equal to the median value. The results considering simulations with 138 kV and 500 kV TLs indicate that adopting concave current waveforms with front time equal to the median Td30 leads to critical peak currents and probability of backflashover very similar to those obtained when the correlation among front time parameters is taking into account, mainly for those conditions of interest to the lightning performance assessment. The larger differences occurred for those cases with probability of backflashover of the order of 1% and lower. On the other hand, the resulting critical maximum steepness diverge in most of cases for those expected by the correlation expressions, but this behaviour did not impact the calculated lightning performance. © 2024 IEEE, © VDE VERLAG GMBH ∙ Berlin ∙ Offenbach.

In this paper, a study is performed to identify the influence of an insulating layer surrounding an overhead cable on the transient overvoltages induced by nearby lightning strikes. The study is performed considering or neglecting the presence of an insulating layer for different load conditions. It is shown that including an insulating layer might be important to accurately characterize the tail of the resulting transient overvoltages whenever mismatched loads are considered at the line ends. On the other hand, calculated peak voltages are nearly unaffected by the presence of the insulating layer.

The effectiveness of using surge arresters (TLSA) under different conditions for improving the lightning performance of transmission lines is assessed. These conditions comprise using TLSA only in critical towers, using less devices (leaving one or two-phases unprotected) and the transfer of overvoltage to unprotected adjacent towers, under different values of tower-footing impedance. In the analyses, lightning overvoltages across insulator of a typical 138-kV transmission line were calculated by using HEM model and flashover occurrence was assessed by using the disruptive effect model (DE), in each simulated condition. The numerical results indicate the operation of TLSA protects the own insulator string and contributes to diminish the backflashover risk at the unprotected insulators, though depending on tower-footing impedance, this risk remains high. Also, the risk of flashover at the unprotected adjacent towers due to the operation of surge arresters at stricken tower was found to be significant, depending on the ratio of tower-footing impedance of stricken and adjacent towers, notably when this impedance is high at the protected tower and low in the adjacent one.

lightning measurements performed recently at Morro do Cachimbo Station, Brazil, are considered in the discussion in order to consolidate previous findings regarding the main propagation features of negative and positive leaders. The stepping mechanism of negative leaders was observed at the station for the first time. Common and unusual propagation features of such leaders were presented. Regarding positive leaders, it was demonstrated that sustained positive upward connecting leaders in negative downward lightning initiates after a 4-A continuous current threshold is exceeded. It was also shown that propagating continuously is a common feature of positive upward leaders in general. Based on these findings, a model of positive upward connecting leaders was presented and discussed.

The impact of the distribution of lightning strikes along the span on the backflashover rate of transmission lines was investigated, by using advanced methodologies and a 138-kV line as reference. The results, obtained using an attractive radius given by Love's expression and distinct conditions of tower-footing grounding impedance and span lengths, indicated a larger span factor in relation to the traditional 0.6-factor. Factors about 0.81 for a 400-m span and 0.84 for a 600-m span length cases were found, suggesting that using the 0.6-factor would underestimate the backflashover rate.
