In this paper we present an algorithm for the Maximum Lifetime Broadcast (MLB) problem, i.e. the problem of extending network lifetime when a series of broadcast operations is executed. The algorithm, called DLMCA, is localized (it uses only 2-hop information) and supports asymmetric edge costs, i.e. those scenarios where the cost of sending a message from a node u to node v might be different from the cost of sending a message from v to u. Addressing asymmetry of edge costs is an important issue, as it arises in different scenarios, such as in heterogeneous networks or when overhearing costs are taken into consideration. According to our experiments, DLMCA outperformed alternative solutions to the problem. As far as we know, DLMCA is the first localized algorithm to the MLB problem with asymmetric edge costs.

Mobile agents have been proposed as a means to address two important issues in the design of Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN): the need for reprogramming the network and decreasing energy expenditure. However, few mobile agent systems have been developed for WSN so far. In this paper we describe MASPOT, a mobile agent system for Sun SPOT, a WSN platform developed by Sun Microsystems. MASPOT provides a solution to the issues above and extends the range of Sun SPOT applications. To the best of our knowledge, MASPOT is the only Java-based mobile agent system for WSN that currently supports code migration. We describe the system and present the results of an experiment to evaluate the amount of energy spent during agent migration. It showed that migration spends around 0.03% of the nodes battery energy. Additionally, MASPOT uses only around 1.5% of the available flash memory of Sun SPOT nodes.

Providing location privacy to users is one of the important issues that must be addressed in Vehicular Ad-Hoc Networks. Recent solutions address it by using cryptographic “mix-zones”, which are anonymizing regions where nodes change their temporary identities (pseudonym) without being tracked. However, existing solutions are vulnerable to internal attackers since within a mix-zone messages are encrypted using a group secret key. In this paper we improve location privacy of mix-zones via extensions to the CMIX protocol. By carrying out extensive simulations, we investigate and compare the effective location privacy provided by the proposed approach.

In order to provide upper-layer applications with continuous message delivery and updated information on membership changes - due to process failures, leaves and joins -, group communication protocols must exchange messages and continuously monitor all group members, which in certain load conditions may incur unacceptable message overhead to the underlying communication system. Therefore, the design of such protocols must deal with the trade-off between performance requirements such as speed (e.g., delivery latency) and cost (e.g., message overhead). However, when the behavior of the computing environment is unknown and can change over time, or when the application requirements can dynamically change, self-configuring is a basic issue that is usually ignored in existing implementations. In this paper we present the design, implementation and evaluation of a novel self-manageable group communication protocol based on the feedback control theory, which is capable of self-configuring its operation parameters at run-time from previously specified requirements such as resource consumption.

Service oriented Architecture (SOA) has been widely used in service computing applications and this fact has been encouraged the publication over the Web in a Web Service format. Whereas the number of Web services published on the Web is growing up, discovery techniques must be improved so as to retrieve more desirable services. Nowadays, the most commonly used technique is semantic filters based on ontological concepts. However, such mechanisms can leave out some important Web services of the matching process, because of their structural relationship not mentioned in an ontology. In order to overcome such problems, some authors have proposed a hybrid approach to combine traditional syntactic and semantic approaches. These proposals remain restricted especially with respect to complexity, precision and time of execution, thus making such solutions in most of cases unfeasible. In this paper, we combine semantic filters based on functional properties with a structural approach, analyzing each neighbor relationship in an ontology. The results showed a considerable improvement in terms of performance and a complexity reduction with respect to other existing techniques. Furthermore, we implement a tool called OWLS-S Discovery in order to simplify the use of our approach by developers.

Failure detectors are basic building blocks from which fault tolerance for distributed systems is constructed. The Quality of Service (QoS) of failure detectors refers to the speed and accuracy of detections and is defined from the applications and computing environment under consideration. Existing failure detection approaches for distributed systems do not support the automatic (re)configuration of failure detectors from QoS requirements. However, when the behavior of the computing environment is unknown and changes over time, or when the application itself changes, self-configuration is a basic issue that must be addressed - particularly for those applications requiring response time and high availability requirements. In this paper we present the design and implementation of a novel autonomic failure detector based on feedback control theory, which is capable of self-configuring its QoS parameters at runtime from previously specified QoS requirements. © IFIP International Federation for Information Processing 2010

Topology control is one of the main techniques that can be used to decrease energy spenditure in wireless sensor networks. Although it has been the subject of much research, less attention has been devoted to study the effects of overhearing on topology control, i.e., the effects of the cost implied by nodes hearing transmissions even if these transmissions were not intended to them. In this paper we describe a distributed (localized) algorithm for topology control in wireless sensor networks. Our approach differs from previous work mainly in the sense that it takes the effects of overhearing into consideration and that it might eliminate more communication links from a given connectivity graph, and thus possibly assign lower transmission power to some nodes. This is done by eliminating so-called k-redundant edges, instead of eliminating only tworedundant edges. We present the sketch of the proof of properties of the algorithm and simulation results.

The new requirements of modern real-time distributed supervision and control systems such as more flexibility, interoperability, and cost savings, have motivated the use of software-intensive solutions both in academia and industry. Following this trend we have presented, in a previous publication, the design rationale and implementation issues of a flexible and reusable software platform (ARCOS) that relies on the CORBA component model (CCM/CIAO), the DAIS (data acquisition from industrial systems) standard, and framework technologies. This paper builds on this previous publication by presenting a new assembly tool that allows for the visual component-based implementation of ARCOS-based systems and the automatic generation of the related CCM/CIAO/ARCOS artifacts. To demonstrate the power of such a tool, two example applications are presented.
