Background: The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted gaps in health surveillance systems, disease prevention, and treatment globally. Among the many factors that might have led to these gaps is the issue of the financing of national health systems, especially in low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs), as well as a robust global system for pandemic preparedness. We aimed to provide a comparative assessment of global health spending at the onset of the pandemic;characterise the amount of development assistance for pandemic preparedness and response disbursed in the first 2 years of the COVID-19 pandemic;and examine expectations for future health spending and put into context the expected need for investment in pandemic preparedness. Methods: In this analysis of global health spending between 1990 and 2021, and prediction from 2021 to 2026, we estimated four sources of health spending: development assistance for health (DAH), government spending, out-of-pocket spending, and prepaid private spending across 204 countries and territories. We used the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD)'s Creditor Reporting system (CRS) and the WHO Global Health Expenditure Database (GHED) to estimate spending. We estimated development assistance for general health, COVID-19 response, and pandemic preparedness and response using a keyword search. Health spending estimates were combined with estimates of resources needed for pandemic prevention and preparedness to analyse future health spending patterns, relative to need. Findings: In 2019, at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, US$9·2 trillion (95% uncertainty interval [UI] 9·1–9·3) was spent on health worldwide. We found great disparities in the amount of resources devoted to health, with high-income countries spending $7·3 trillion (95% UI 7·2–7·4) in 2019;293·7 times the $24·8 billion (95% UI 24·3–25·3) spent by low-income countries in 2019. Chronic care manages long-term, progressive conditions, while acute care addresses short-term conditions. Chronic conditions increasingly strain health systems, which are often unprepared for these demands. This study examines the burden of conditions requiring acute versus chronic care, including sequelae. Conditions and sequelae from the Global Burden of Diseases Study 2019 were classified into acute or chronic care categories. Data were analysed by age, sex, and socio-demographic index, presenting total numbers and contributions to burden metrics such as Disability-Adjusted Life Years (DALYs), Years Lived with Disability (YLD), and Years of Life Lost (YLL). Approximately 68% of DALYs were attributed to chronic care, while 27% were due to acute care. Chronic care needs increased with age, representing 86% of YLDs and 71% of YLLs, and accounting for 93% of YLDs from sequelae. These findings highlight that chronic care needs far exceed acute care needs globally, necessitating health systems to adapt accordingly. © 2025. The Author(s).

Mobile devices equipped with geo-location modules facilitate researches on the nature of human mobility. While valuable contributions have been made to discover trajectory patterns from movement history, there are still not a comparative amount of works specialized in analyzing how trajectory patterns change over time. In this paper, we facilitate this problem in a systematic and quantified manner as identifying potential change points of user trajectory patterns extracted from successive time intervals. Specifically, we present a unified, information-based measure to quantify pattern changes between two intervals, and perform a Bayesian analysis on a sequence of aggregate measures for each individual interval to detect the actual change points. Experimenting on a three-month long dataset in real campus WiFi networks, we show that our approach is effective to identify trajectory pattern changes in practice with a discussion on the impact of internal parameters of proposed model on detection performance. Furthermore, we also inspect external factors influencing user mobility in reality by associating trajectory pattern changes with public events, and there shows an interesting connection between group pattern changes and real-world principles such as the weekday calendar or public events such as the May Day holiday. © 2013 ACM.

The paper presents the electromyogram (EMG)-based neural network control of an upper-limb power-assist exoskeleton robot, which is proposed to control the robot in accordance with the user's motion intention. The upper limb rehabilitation exoskeleton is with high precision for co-manipulation tasks of human and robot because of its backdrivability, precise positioning capabilities, and zero backlash due to its harmonic drive transmission (HDT). The novelty of this work is the development of an adaptive neural network modeling and control approach to handle the unknown parameters of the harmonic drive transmission in the robot to facilitate motion control. We have conducted the experiments on human subject to identify the various parameters of the harmonic drive system combining sEMG information signals. © 2013 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

Brain-computer interface (BCI) controlled wheelchair robots can serve as powerful aids for severely disabled people in their daily life, especially to help them move voluntarily. In order to better understand human “thought”, owing to the development of the hybrid brain/muscle interface technique, in this paper, we present a real-time hybrid brain/muscle interface to control a wheelchair directly to keep the disables recovering several motion capabilities by using noninvasive motor imagery Electroencephalography (EEG) and Electromyography (EMG). The EMG and EEG signals from the users are extracted to control the motion of an intelligent wheelchair. Both signals processing consists of off-line training, online control evaluation, and real-time control. An algorithm called the common spatial patterns (CSP) is used in this human-robot system to extract the most discriminative spatial patterns pairs as features. The extensive experiments were conducted on the developed human-wheelchair systems to verify the proposed approaches.
