The last decade has seen rapid growth of single-chip multiprocessors (CMPs), which have been leveraging Moore's law to deliver high concurrency via increases in the number of cores and vector width. Modern CMPs execute from several hundreds to several thousands concurrent operations per second, while their memory subsystem delivers from tens to hundreds Giga-bytes per second bandwidth. Taking advantage of these parallel resources requires highly tuned parallel implementations of key computational kernels, which form the back-bone of modern HPC. Sparse triangular solver is one such kernel and is the focus of this paper. It is widely used in several types of sparse linear solvers, and it is commonly considered challenging to parallelize and scale even on a moderate number of cores. This challenge is due to the fact that triangular solver typically has limited task-level parallelism and relies on fine-grain synchronization to exploit this parallelism, compared to data-parallel operations such as sparse matrix-vector multiplication. This paper presents synchronization sparsification technique that significantly reduces the overhead of synchronization in sparse triangular solver and improves its scalability. We discover that a majority of task dependencies are redundant in task dependency graphs which are used to model the flow of computation in sparse triangular solver. We propose a fast and approximate sparsification algorithm, which eliminates more than 90% of these dependencies, substantially reducing synchronization overhead. As a result, on a 12-core Intel® Xeon® processor, our approach improves the performance of sparse triangular solver by 1.6x, compared to the conventional level-scheduling with barrier synchronization. This, in turn, leads to a 1.4x speedup in a pre-conditioned conjugate gradient solver. © 2014 Springer International Publishing.

With the dramatic growing of mobile application markets, users can find apps with any function they desire in these markets. However, the huge amounts of apps make it quite a challenge for users to discover good applications efficiently. Previous studies recommend applications based on the download history, user ratings or app usage records. Most of these studies fail to capture users' personal interests in mobile applications precisely. In this paper, we leverage apps as features for describing user's personal interests and propose a novel approach to do personalized recommendation. We introduce a Small-Crowd model to distinguish apps at reflecting users' personal interests, and design a weighting method to rank the installed apps for users by combining the global download information with fine-grained app usage records. The extensive experiments validate the effectiveness of our approach which outperforms state-of-the-art method. Copyright 2014 ACM.

Multimedia data, especially image and video data, have become one of the most overwhelming data types on the Internet recently. Considering the user experience and real application requirements, multimedia data always demand a real-time processing speed. As a result, the huge amount of such data make retrieving useful information from them not only data-intensive, but also computation-intensive, which poses significant challenges to current system and architecture designs. Unfortunately, most prior studies focus only on text based retrieval systems or traditional multimedia processing applications. As far as we know, there is no systematic study on analyzing the characteristics of multimedia retrieval applications and how they might impact system and architecture designs. In this paper, we make the first attempt to construct a multimedia retrieval benchmark suite (called MMR Bench) to evaluate the corresponding system and architecture designs. To embody diverse multimedia retrieval applications, we collect eight state-of-the-art multimedia retrieval algorithms which cover the whole retrieval stages, including feature extraction, feature matching, and spatial verification. To satisfy diverse evaluation purposes, we implement multiple versions for each algorithm, including sequential version, pthread version for multi-core evaluation and data-parallel (i.e., Map-reduce) version for data-center evaluation. Moreover, MMR Bench provides flexible interfaces through retrieval stages, as well as a tool to adjust parameters and regenerating different scales of reasonable input. With such a flexible design, the algorithms in MMR Bench may be not only suitable for individual kernel-level evaluation, but also capable to be integrated into a complete infrastructure for system-level evaluation. Enhanced environment awareness is a key element of life protection in dangerous situations. Thus the Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) clothing industry is forced in the direction to develop highly innovative “intelligent” products, and equip their products with sensors and actuators combined with smart technologies. Besides basic functions of protection, thermal and ergonomic comfort, these new generation protective garments have additional functions such as monitoring and/or alarming for prevention in case of emergency situation. Such systems are costly because even if the clothing and engineering parts of the development are feasible, their combination is far from trivial. The different system parts have different requirements, and these requirements are sometimes not compatible with each other. Parameters such as cost, bulkiness, accuracy, independency, scalability, robustness are key parameters, which can cause high acceptance or usage prevention rapidly by the end-users. Our research is focusing on the seamless integration of the various subsystems to develop effective and user friendly, intelligent situation aware personal protection systems. Our solution helps to receive accurate information about user performance and activity conditions. The main goal of our work is to adapt the already existing monitoring solution and provide it to people working in harsh environment. The paper describes the results of our development with the description of the main functionalities.

In order to describe a structured region of memory, the routines in the MPI standard use a (count, datatype) pair. The C specification for this convention uses an int type for the count. Since C int types are nearly always 32 bits large and signed, counting more than 231 elements poses a challenge. Instead of changing the existing MPI routines, and all consumers of those routines, the MPI Forum asserts that users can build up large datatypes from smaller types. To evaluate this hypothesis and to provide a user-friendly solution to the large-count issue, we have developed BigMPI, a library on top of MPI that maps large-count MPI-like functions to MPI-3 standard features. BigMPI demonstrates a way to perform such a construction, reveals shortcomings of the MPI standard, and uncovers bugs in MPI implementations. © 2014 IEEE.

Insider threat has become a serious information security issues within organizations. In this paper, we analyze the problem of insider threats with emphases on the Cloud computing platform. Security is one of the major anxieties when planning to adopt the Cloud. This paper will contribute towards the conception of mitigation strategies that can be relied on to solve the malicious insider threats. While Cloud computing relieves organizations from the burden of the data management and storage costs, security in general and the malicious insider threats in particular is the main concern in cloud environments. We will analyses the existing mitigation strategies to reduce malicious insiders threats in Cloud computing.

Trust management has been identified as vital component for establishing and maintaining successful relational exchanges between e-commerce trading partners in cloud environment. In this highly competitive and distributed service environment, the assurances are insufficient for the consumers to identify the dependable and trustworthy Cloud providers. Due to these limitations, potential consumers are not sure whether they can trust the Cloud providers in offering dependable services. In this paper, we propose a multi-faceted trust management system architecture for cloud computing marketplaces, to support customers in identifying trustworthy cloud providers. This paper presents the important threats to a trust system and proposed a method for tackling these threats. It described the desired feature of a trust management system. It security components to determine the trustworthiness of e- commerce participants to helps online customers to decide whether or not to proceed with a transaction. Based on this framework, we proposed an approach for filtering out malicious feedbacks and a trust metric to evaluate the trustworthiness of service provider. Results of various simulation experiments show that the proposed multi-attribute trust management system can be highly effective in identifying risky transaction in electronic market places.

Service Level Agreements for the Digital Library

Digital libraries offer a massive set of digital services to geographically distributed library patrons. The digital services are commonly sourced from third-party service providers for charge. As externally sourced digital services are becoming prevalence, issues regarding their quality assessment are gaining critical importance. Unfortunately, sourcing digital services from external providers has brought with it stringent quality of service (QoS) demand from the library service users. Currently, there is no way for ensuring QoS between the digital service providers and the library management. In this paper, we propose service level agreements (SLAs) to capture the QoS requirements of the digital service users and the commitments, as well as adherence of the digital service providers.

In service-oriented computing applications, trust management systems are emerging as a promising technology to improve the e-commerce consumers and provider's relationship. Both consumers and providers need to evaluate the trust levels of potential partners before engaging in interactions. The accuracy of trust evaluation greatly affects the success rate of the interaction. This paper addresses the threats and challenges that can compromise the reliability of the current trust management system. This paper studies and examines the importance of the trust factors of the trust management framework, specifically in dealing with malicious feedback ratings from e-commerce users. To improve the reliability of the trust management systems, an approach that addresses feedback-related vulnerabilities is paramount. A multilevel trust management system computes trust by combining different types of information. Using this combination, we introduce a multilevel framework for a new interactive trust management to improve the correctness in estimate of trust information.

With the introduction of digital library services, the quality of service (QoS) has become paramount importance for evaluating the performance of the digital library service provisioning. Various models and frameworks have been proposed to evaluate digital library QoS. However, the prevalent research concentration in QoS for digital library is on the dimensions of the perspective of users’ perception. In this paper, we address the same research problem from a different dimension which is from the perspective of the digital service providers. To this end, we propose a new model suitable for evaluating the performance of digital library services. We argue that the level of QoS provided by the digital service providers have direct impact on the perception and satisfaction of the digital service end-users.
