Impact of Black Swan Events on Ethereum Blockchain ERC20 Token Transaction Networks

The Ethereum blockchain and its ERC20 token standard have revolutionized the landscape of digital assets and decentralized applications. ERC20 tokens developed on the Ethereum blockchain have gained significant attention since their introduction. They are programmable and interoperable tokens, enabling various applications and token economies. Transaction graphs, representing the flow of the value between wallets within the Ethereum network, have played a crucial role in understanding the system’s dynamics, such as token transfers and the behavior of traders. Here, we explore the evolution of daily transaction graphs of ERC20 token transactions, which sheds light on the trader’s behavior during the Black Swan Events – 2018 crypto crash and the COVID-19 pandemic. By using the tools from network science and differential geometry, we analyze 0.98 billion of ERC20 token transaction data from November 2015 to January 2023. Our analysis reveals that ERC20 financial ecosystem has evolved from a localized wealth formation period to a more mature financial ecosystem where wealth has dispersed among the traders in the network after the crypto crash and during the pandemic period. Before the crash, most sellers only sell the tokens, and buyers only buy the tokens. However, after the crash and during the pandemic period, sellers and buyers both performed buying and selling activities. In addition, we observe no significant negative impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on user behavior in the financial ecosystem. © 2023, CC BY.

LiDAR-based 3D detectors perform well on particular autonomous driving benchmarks, but may poorly generalize to other domains. Existing 3D domain adaptive detection methods usually require annotation-related statistics or continuous refinement of pseudo-labels. The former is not always feasible for practical applications, while the latter lacks sufficient accurate supervision. In this work, we propose a novel unsupervised domain adaptive framework, namely Adaptation Via Proxy (AVP), that explicitly leverages cross-domain relationships to generate adequate high-quality samples without any target statistics, thus mitigating domain shifts for existing LiDAR-based 3D detectors. Specifically, we first train the detector on the source domain with curriculum example mining to enhance its generalization capability. Then, we fine-tune the pre-trained detector on the instance-aware proxy that is a data collection with stronger supervision. The instance-aware proxy utilizes the profitable instances from the source domain to provide more robust supervision for optimizing the detector to overcome domain gaps. Note that AVP is architecture-agnostic thus it can be easily injected with any LiDAR-based 3D detectors. Extensive experiments on Waymo, nuScenes, KITTI and Lyft demonstrate the superiority of the proposed method over the state-of-the-art approaches for different adaptation scenarios. © 2023, The Authors. In this letter, an accelerated quadratic programming (QP) algorithm is proposed based on the proximal gradient method. The algorithm can achieve convergence rate O(1/pα), where p is the iteration number and α is the given positive integer. The proposed algorithm improves the convergence rate of existing algorithms that achieve O(1/p2). The key idea is that iterative parameters are selected from a group of specific high order polynomial equations. The performance of the proposed algorithm is assessed on the randomly generated model predictive control (MPC) optimization problems. The experimental results show that our algorithm can outperform the state-of-the-art optimization software MOSEK and ECOS for the small size MPC problems. Copyright © 2021, The Authors. Motivated by recent surprising experimental findings, we develop a strong-coupling theory for Bose-Fermi mixtures capable of treating resonant inter-species interactions while satisfying the compressibility sum rule. We show that the mixture can be stable at large interaction strengths close to resonance, in agreement with the experiment but at odds with the widely used perturbation theory. We also calculate the sound velocity of the Bose gas in the 133Cs-6Li mixture, again finding good agreement with the experimental observations both at weak and strong interactions. A central ingredient of our theory is the generalization of a fermion mediated interaction to strong Bose-Fermi scatterings and to finite frequencies. This further leads to a predicted hybridization of the sound modes of the Bose and Fermi gases, which can be directly observed using Bragg spectroscopy. © 2023, CC BY.

With the rise of foundation models, there is growing concern about their potential social impacts. Social science has a long history of studying the social impacts of transformative technologies in terms of pre-existing systems of power and how these systems are disrupted or reinforced by new technologies. In this position paper, we build on prior work studying the social impacts of earlier technologies to propose a conceptual framework studying foundation models as sociotechnical systems, incorporating social science expertise to better understand how these models affect systems of power, anticipate the impacts of deploying these models in various applications, and study the effectiveness of technical interventions intended to mitigate social harms. We advocate for an interdisciplinary and collaborative research paradigm between AI and social science across all stages of foundation model research and development to promote socially responsible research practices and use cases, and outline several strategies to facilitate such research. Medical dialogue generation (MDG) has gained increasing attention due to its substantial practical value. Previous works typically employ a sequence-to-sequence framework to generate medical responses by modeling dialogue context as sequential text with annotated medical entities. While these methods have been successful in generating fluent responses, they fail to provide process explanations of reasoning and require extensive entity annotation. To address these limitations, we propose the method Bootstrap Prompting for Explicit Reasoning in MDG (BP4ER), which explicitly model MDG’s multi-step reasoning process and iteratively enhance this reasoning process. We employ a least-to-most prompting strategy to guide a large language model (LLM) in explicit reasoning, breaking down MDG into simpler sub-questions. These sub-questions build on answers from previous ones. Additionally, we also introduce two distinct bootstrapping techniques for prompting, which autonomously correct errors and facilitate the LLM’s explicit reasoning. This approach eliminates the need for entity annotation and increases the transparency of the MDG process by explicitly generating the intermediate reasoning chain. The experimental findings on the two public datasets indicate that BP4ER outperforms state-of-the-art methods in terms of both objective and subjective evaluation metrics. With serverless computing offering more efficient and cost-effective application deployment, the diversity of serverless platforms presents challenges to users, including platform lock-in and costly migration. Moreover, due to the black box nature of function computing, traditional performance benchmarking methods are not applicable, necessitating new studies. This article presents a detailed comparison of six major public cloud function computing platforms and introduces a benchmarking framework for function computing performance. This framework aims to help users make comprehensive comparisons and select the most suitable platform for their specific needs.

Quenching of oscillations, namely, amplitude and oscillations death, is an emerging phenomenon exhibited by many real-world complex systems. Here, we introduce a scheme that combines dissimilar couplings and repulsive feedback links for the interactions of Stuart-Landau oscillators and analytically derive the conditions required for the amplitude death. Importantly, this analysis is independent of the network size, presents a generalized approach to calculate the stability conditions for various different coupling schemes, and befits nonidentical oscillators as well. Last, we discuss the similarities of the quenching of oscillations phenomenon with the postictal generalized Electroencephalogram (EEG) suppression in convulsive seizures.

To optimize interventions for improving wellness, it is essential to understand habits, which wearable devices can measure with greater precision. Using high temporal resolution biometric data taken from the Oura Gen3 ring, we examine daily and weekly sleep and activity patterns of a cohort of young adults (N = 582) in their first semester of college. A high compliance rate is observed for both daily and nightly wear, with slight dips in wear compliance observed shortly after waking up and also in the evening. Most students have a late-night chronotype with a median midpoint of sleep at 5AM, with males and those with mental health impairment having more delayed sleep periods. Social jetlag, or the difference in sleep times between free days and school days, is prevalent in our sample. While sleep periods generally shift earlier on weekdays and later on weekends, sleep duration on both weekdays and weekends is shorter than during prolonged school breaks, suggesting chronic sleep debt when school is in session. Synchronized spikes in activity consistent with class schedules are also observed, suggesting that walking in between classes is a widespread behavior in our sample that substantially contributes to physical activity. Lower active calorie expenditure is associated with weekends and a delayed but longer sleep period the night before, suggesting that for our cohort, active calorie expenditure is affected less by deviations from natural circadian rhythms and more by the timing associated with activities. Our study shows that regular sleep and activity routines may be inferred from consumer wearable devices if high temporal resolution and long data collection periods are available.
