This article proposes an encoder-decoder network model for Acoustic Scene Classification (ASC), the task of identifying the scene of an audio recording from its acoustic signature. We make use of multiple low-level spectrogram features at the front-end, transformed into higher level features through a well-trained CNN-DNN front-end encoder. The high level features and their combination (via a trained feature combiner) are then fed into different decoder models comprising random forest regression, DNNs and a mixture of experts, for back-end classification. We report extensive experiments to evaluate the accuracy of this framework for various ASC datasets, including LITIS Rouen and IEEE AASP Challenge on Detection and Classification of Acoustic Scenes and Events (DCASE) 2016 Task 1, 2017 Task 1, 2018 Tasks 1A & 1B and 2019 Tasks 1A & 1B. The experimental results highlight two main contributions;the first is an effective method for high-level feature extraction from multi-spectrogram input via the novel C-DNN architecture encoder network, and the second is the proposed decoder which enables the framework to achieve competitive results on various datasets. The fact that a single framework is highly competitive for several different challenges is an indicator of its robustness for performing general ASC tasks. Copyright © 2020, The Authors. Robust deep learning framework for predicting respiratory anomalies and diseases

This paper presents a robust deep learning framework developed to detect respiratory diseases from recordings of respiratory sounds. The complete detection process firstly involves front end feature extraction where recordings are transformed into spectrograms that convey both spectral and temporal information. Then a back-end deep learning model classifies the features into classes of respiratory disease or anomaly. Experiments, conducted over the ICBHI benchmark dataset of respiratory sounds, evaluate the ability of the framework to classify sounds. Two main contributions are made in this paper. Firstly, we provide an extensive analysis of how factors such as respiratory cycle length, time resolution, and network architecture, affect final prediction accuracy. Secondly, a novel deep learning based framework is proposed for detection of respiratory diseases and shown to perform extremely well compared to state of the art methods. Proposals of artificial intelligence (AI) solutions based on increasingly complex and accurate predictive models are becoming ubiquitous across many disciplines. As the complexity of these models grows, transparency and users' understanding often diminish. This suggests that accurate prediction alone is insufficient for making an AI-based solution truly useful. In the development of healthcare systems, this introduces new issues related to accountability and safety. Understanding how and why an AI system makes a recommendation may require complex explanations of its inner workings and reasoning processes. Although research on explainable AI (XAI) has significantly increased in recent years and there is high demand for XAI in medicine, defining what constitutes a good explanation remains ad hoc, and providing adequate explanations continues to be challenging. To fully realize the potential of AI, it is critical to address two fundamental questions about explanations for safety-critical AI applications, such as health-AI: (1) What is an explanation in health-AI? and (2) What are the attributes of a good explanation in health-AI? In this study, we examined published literature and gathered expert opinions through a two-round Delphi study. The research outputs include (1) a definition of what constitutes an explanation in health-AI and (2) a comprehensive list of attributes that characterize a good explanation in health-AI. © 2024, CC BY.

Speech-to-Noise Ratio and Voice-to-Noise Ratio of Voice Databases With Implications for Acoustic Voice Analysis

OBJECTIVES:This study aimed to examine the speech-to-noise ratio (SNR) and voice-to-noise ratio (VNR) in five freely available databases and one university voice database to clarify whether they meet the signal quality requirements for use in acoustic voice analysis. METHODS:This was a retrospective study that extracted the prolonged vowel /ɑ/, short phrases, and connected speech in 977 nondisordered and voice-disordered speakers from 6 preexisting voice and speech databases, including Advanced Voice Function Assessment Databases (AVFAD), Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary (MEEI), Perceptual Voice Qualities Database (PVQD), Saarbruecken Voice Database (SVD), Uncommon Voice, and University of Sydney Voice Assessment Clinic (USVAC). These vocal tasks were extracted from randomly selected study identitys and were used to measure SNR and VNR using a Praat script. SNR and VNR were described using descriptive statistics and compared across databases using multivariate analysis of variance. Vocal task effects and group effects within each database were calculated. RESULTS:There was great variability in signal quality across databases with wide ranges of SNR and VNR from low to high values. Except the Uncommon Voice database, in databases with measurable SNR and VNR from available tasks, there were statistically significant effects of tasks and groups on both SNR and VNR in AVFAD, USVAC, and PVQD. Overall, the vowel /ɑ/ and phrases had higher SNR and VNR than connected speech. In databases with single measurable task, group effects were significant for MEEI and not significant for SVD. CONCLUSIONS:These databases provided voice samples with variable signal quality, ranging from low to high levels compared with recommended values. The decreased values of SNR and VNR in connected speech tasks in these databases suggested the effects of articulation factors on these two measures. Semi-supervised bootstrapping of dialogue state trackers for task oriented modelling

Dialogue systems benefit greatly from optimizing on detailed annotations, such as transcribed utterances, internal dialogue state representations and dialogue act labels. However, collecting these annotations is expensive and time-consuming, holding back development in the area of dialogue modelling. In this paper, we investigate semi-supervised learning methods that are able to reduce the amount of required intermediate labelling. We find that by leveraging un-annotated data instead, the amount of turn-level annotations of dialogue state can be significantly reduced when building a neural dialogue system. Our analysis on the MultiWOZ corpus, covering a range of domains and topics, finds that annotations can be reduced by up to 30% while maintaining equivalent system performance. We also describe and evaluate the first end-to-end dialogue model created for the MultiWOZ corpus. Copyright © 2019, The Authors. All rights reserved.

For delay-sensitive applications in mobile edge computing (MEC), task admission approach is of vital importance, and there has been a lot of researches in this field. But previous works focus on the situation with only one MEC server that is a simplification of the real world. In multi-servers situation, some devices may be within the service range of multiple MEC servers, so that they could choose which MEC server to offload. We formulate this problem to a multiple-choice integer program (MCIP) and utilize Ben's genetic algorithm to solve it. The simulation results show that our approach can significantly reduce energy consumption and every task can catch its deadline under almost all experiments.

This article's main contributions are twofold: 1) to demonstrate how to apply the general European Union's High-Level Expert Group's (EU HLEG) guidelines for trustworthy AI in practice for the domain of healthcare and 2) to investigate the research question of what does 'trustworthy AI' mean at the time of the COVID-19 pandemic. To this end, we present the results of a post-hoc self-assessment to evaluate the trustworthiness of an AI system for predicting a multiregional score conveying the degree of lung compromise in COVID-19 patients, developed and verified by an interdisciplinary team with members from academia, public hospitals, and industry in time of pandemic. The AI system aims to help radiologists to estimate and communicate the severity of damage in a patient's lung from Chest X-rays. It has been experimentally deployed in the radiology department of the ASST Spedali Civili clinic in Brescia, Italy, since December 2020 during pandemic time. The methodology we have applied for our post-hoc assessment, called Z-Inspection®, uses sociotechnical scenarios to identify ethical, technical, and domain-specific issues in the use of the AI system in the context of the pandemic. © 2020 IEEE.

In this paper, we present a review of how the various aspects of any study using an eye tracker (such as the instrument, methodology, environment, participant, etc.) affect the quality of the recorded eye-tracking data and the obtained eye-movement and gaze measures. We take this review to represent the empirical foundation for reporting guidelines of any study involving an eye tracker. We compare this empirical foundation to five existing reporting guidelines and to a database of 207 published eye-tracking studies. We find that reporting guidelines vary substantially and do not match with actual reporting practices. We end by deriving a minimal, flexible reporting guideline based on empirical research (Section "An empirically based minimal reporting guideline").

The fields of music, health, and technology have seen significant interactions in recent years in developing music technology for health care and well-being. In an effort to strengthen the collaboration between the involved disciplines, the workshop “Music, computing, and Health” was held to discuss best practices and state-of-the-art at the intersection of these areas with researchers from music psychology and neuroscience, music therapy, music information retrieval, music technology, medical technology (medtech), and robotics. Following the discussions at the workshop, this article provides an overview of the different methods of the involved disciplines and their potential contributions to developing music technology for health and well-being. Furthermore, the article summarizes the state of the art in music technology that can be applied in various health scenarios and provides a perspective on challenges and opportunities for developing music technology that (1) supports person-centered care and evidence-based treatments, and (2) contributes to developing standardized, large-scale research on music-based interventions in an interdisciplinary manner. The article provides a resource for those seeking to engage in interdisciplinary research using music-based computational methods to develop technology for health care, and aims to inspire future research directions by evaluating the state of the art with respect to the challenges facing each field. © The Author(s) 2021.
