While sentiment analysis in English has achieved significant progress, it remains a challenging task in Arabic given the rich morphology of the language. It becomes more challenging when applied to Twitter data that comes with additional sources of noise including dialects, misspellings, grammatical mistakes, code switching and the use of non-textual objects to express sentiments. This paper describes the "OMAM" systems that we developed as part of SemEval-2017 task 4. We evaluate English state-of-the-art methods on Arabic tweets for subtask A. As for the remaining subtasks, we introduce a topic-based approach that accounts for topic specificities by predicting topics or domains of upcoming tweets, and then using this information to predict their sentiment. Results indicate that applying the English state-of-the-art method to Arabic has achieved solid results without significant enhancements. Furthermore, the topic-based method ranked 1st in subtasks C and E, and 2nd in subtask D. © 2017 Association for Computational Linguistics

Research software has become a central asset in academic research. It optimizes existing and enables new research methods, implements and embeds research knowledge, and constitutes an essential research product in itself. Research software must be sustainable in order to understand, replicate, reproduce, and build upon existing research or conduct new research effectively. In other words, software must be available, discoverable, usable, and adaptable to new needs, both now and in the future. Research software therefore requires an environment that supports sustainability. Hence, a change is needed in the way research software development and maintenance are currently motivated, incentivized, funded, structurally and infrastructurally supported, and legally treated. Failing to do so will threaten the quality and validity of research. In this paper, we identify challenges for research software sustainability in Germany and beyond, in terms of motivation, selection, research software engineering personnel, funding, infrastructure, and legal aspects. Besides researchers, we specifically address political and academic decision-makers to increase awareness of the importance and needs of sustainable research software practices. In particular, we recommend strategies and measures to create an environment for sustainable research software, with the ultimate goal to ensure that software-driven research is valid, reproducible and sustainable, and that software is recognized as a first class citizen in research. This paper is the outcome of two workshops run in Germany in 2019, at deRSE19 - the first International Conference of Research Software Engineers in Germany - and a dedicated DFG-supported follow-up workshop in Berlin. Statistical Parametric Speech Synthesis Using Generative Adversarial Networks under A Multi-Task Learning Framework

In this paper, we aim at improving the performance of synthesized speech in statistical parametric speech synthesis (SPSS) based on a generative adversarial network (GAN). In particular, we propose a novel architecture combining the traditional acoustic loss function and the GAN's discriminative loss under a multi-task learning (MTL) framework. The mean squared error (MSE) is usually used to estimate the parameters of deep neural networks, which only considers the numerical difference between the raw audio and the synthesized one. To mitigate this problem, we introduce the GAN as a second task to determine if the input is a natural speech with specific conditions. In this MTL framework, the MSE optimization improves the stability of GAN, and at the same time GAN produces samples with a distribution closer to natural speech. Listening tests show that the multi-task architecture can generate more natural speech that satisfies human perception than the conventional methods. Copyright © 2017, The Authors. To study and implement a computer evaluation system for spoken English pronunciation is important for learners to improve their spoken English. This paper introduces an undergraduate-oriented evaluation model of spoken English pronunciation and its related system, with four evaluation parameter of accuracy, speed, rhythm and intonation. This paper illustrates the necessity of each evaluation index, its computer realization method, and its weight in the overall evaluation model. Verified by experiments, the evaluation index and the model method adopted in this paper are reasonable and reliable.

OpenMP has become a successful programming model for developing multi-threaded applications. However, there are still some challenges in terms of OpenMP’s interoperability within itself and with other parallel programming APIs. In this paper, we explore typical use cases that expose OpenMP’s interoperability challenges and report our proposed solutions for addressing the resource oversubscription issue as the efforts by the OpenMP Interoperability language subcommittee. The solutions include OpenMP runtime routines for changing the wait policies, which include ACTIVE(SPIN BUSY or SPIN PAUSE), PASSIVE (SPIN YIELD or SUSPEND), of idling threads for improved resource management, and routines for supporting contributing OpenMP threads to other thread libraries or tasks. Our initial implementations are being done by extending two OpenMP runtime libraries, Intel OpenMP (IOMP) and GNU OpenMP (GOMP). The evaluation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach to address the CPU oversubscription challenge and detailed analysis provide heuristics for selecting an optimal wait policy according to the oversubscription ratios. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2016.

A new question representation method is proposed for automated question matching over accumulated question-answer data archive. The representation defines four kinds of question words as question-type words, user-centered words, shareable-pattern words, and irrelevant words for question analysis. These question words are further annotated by a semantic labeling ontology to enhance the semantic representation for the purpose of word ambiguity reduction. We tested the matching precision on 5,000 questions with respect to various generators and the result demonstrated the stability of the method. We further compared the method with Cosine similarity and WordNet-based semantic similarity as baselines on a standard TREC dataset containing 5,536 questions. The results presented that our method improved MRR by 8.6% and accuracy by 9.6% on average, indicating its effectiveness. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2015.

When tweeting on a topic, Twitter users often post messages that convey the same or similar meaning. We describe TweetingJay, a system for detecting paraphrases and semantic similarity of tweets, with which we participated in Task 1 of SemEval 2015. TweetingJay uses a supervised model that combines semantic overlap and word alignment features, previously shown to be effective for detecting semantic textual similarity. TweetingJay reaches 65.9% F1-score and ranked fourth among the 18 participating systems. We additionally provide an analysis of the dataset and point to some peculiarities of the evaluation setup. © 2015 Association for Computational Linguistics

The neural network method is one of the most important methods in the field of speech recognition. In this paper, we propose a new speech recognition method, probabilistic neural network (PNN) ensembles, where the Bagging ensembles method is used to form a speech recognition model with probabilistic neural networks integrated, to implement a speaker-independent English speech recognition system. This paper also demonstrates that before speech recognition, applying segment clustering algorithm to the extracted speech data, i.e., the process of time warping, can ensure the validity of dataset and the performance of PNN. Through experiments, the experimental results show that the PNN ensembles method has faster modeling speed and higher recognition rate than the single BP (Back Propagation) and the BP ensembles method, and has higher recognition rate than the traditional PNN method.

In recent years, next-generation sequencing technologies have been widely used, and are rapidly changing the landscape of genetics with unimaginable speed. However, the preliminary quality control regulations including trimming adaptor sequences, quality statistics, and depth and coverage statistics need to be applied to raw reads before further analysis. QACtools implements various utilities for processing raw reads in the FASTQ format and alignments in the BAM *** analyzes some relevant properties of next-generation sequencing data such as average read length, base quality scores, and so on. Additionally, to our knowledge,none of the other tools support depth and coverage statistic that have been provided in our tool for analysis of large DNA sequencing data. It is crucial for overcoming errors in base calling and assembly. We suppose tool is useful for the quality control of NGS data to perform further analysis. This software is an open source application freely available at https://***/projects/qactools/.
