In this paper, we employ normalized modulation spectral features for objective voice quality assessment regarding grade (hoarseness). Modulation spectra usually produce a high-dimensionality space. For classification purposes, the size of the original space is reduced using Higher Order Singular Value Decomposition (SVD). Further, we select most relevant features based on the mutual information between subjective voice quality (the degree of hoarseness) and the computed features, which leads to an adaptive to the classification task modulation spectral representation. The adaptive modulation spectral features are used as input to a Naive Bayes (NB) classifier. By combining two NB classifiers based on different feature sets a global classification rate of 73.93% for hoarseness was achieved. ©2010 IEEE.

We present new results from a real-user evaluation of a data-driven approach to learning user-adaptive referring expression generation (REG) policies for spoken dialogue systems. Referring expressions can be difficult to understand in technical domains where users may not know the technical 'jargon' names of the domain entities. In such cases, dialogue systems must be able to model the user's (lexical) domain knowledge and use appropriate referring expressions. We present a reinforcement learning (RL) framework in which the system learns REG policies which can adapt to unknown users online. For real users of such a system, we show that in comparison to an adaptive hand-coded baseline policy, the learned policy performs significantly better, with a 20.8% average increase in adaptation accuracy, 12.6% decrease in time taken, and a 15.1% increase in task completion rate. The learned policy also has a significantly better subjective rating from users. This is because the learned policies adapt online to changing evidence about the user's domain expertise. We also discuss the issue of evaluation in simulation versus evaluation with real users. © 2010 Association for Computational Linguistics.

Sinusoidal model and its variants are commonly used in speech processing. In the literature, there are various methods for the estimation of the unknown parameters of sinusoidal model such as Fourier transform based on FFT algorithm and Least Squares (LS) method. Least Squares method is more accurate and actually optimum for Gaussian noise, thus, more appropriate for high-quality signal processing, however, it is slower compared with FFT-based algorithms. In this paper, we study the source of computational load of LS solution and propose various computational improvements. We show that the complexity of LS solution as well the execution time are highly improved. © 2010 ISCA.

Software tools are used to compare multiple versions of a textual document to help a reader understand the evolution of that document over time. These tools generally support the comparison of only two versions of a document, requiring multiple comparisons to be made to derive a full history of the document across multiple versions. We present Deep Diffs, a novel visualisation technique that exposes the multiple layers of history of a document at once, directly in the text, highlighting areas that have changed over multiple successive versions, and drawing attention to passages that are new, potentially unpolished or contentious. These composite views facilitate the writing and editing process by assisting memory and encouraging the analysis of collab.ratively-authored documents. We describe how this technique effectively supports common text editing tasks and heightens participants' understanding of the process in collab.rative editing scenarios like wiki editing and paper writing. Network modelling and simulation is an important approach to implement effective traffic control strategies and management policies for urban mobility. With much advance in communication and information technologies, and as ubiquitous computing becomes part of most people's lives, both infrastructure and user experiment a new dimension of their relationship that demands for a proper behaviour from control and management systems. In this paper we use the autonomous agent metaphor to implement intelligent control through a fuzzy Q-learning approach. The controller decision-making mechanisms and some preliminary simulation experiments are set up so as to assess the feasibility of our model to cope with urban traffic coordination and management. ©2010 IEEE.

In this paper we review the concept of Ambient Intelligence (AmI) and investigate its inherent technological services in the light of potential applications to ITS-related scenarios. Albeit AmI and ITS may seem to overlap in many aspects, they are indeed different and their true synergetic and mutual benefits have not been fully explored nor exploited. Therefore, coupling these two emerging fields might foster a cross-fertilization of opportunities, both for researchers in the scientific community and engineers as well as practitioners in charge of traffic operations. Bearing in mind such a challenging motivation, we propose an integrated research framework where AmI meets ITS requirements in the real world, is analysed in a virtual environment and support decision-making within virtual control strategists and management policy makers modelled under the metaphor of autonomous agents. Issues are still to be addressed and are discussed as future work opportunities. ©2010 IEEE.

This paper presents a new method of extracting LF model based parameters using a spectral model matching approach. Strategies are described for overcoming some of the known difficulties of this type of approach, in particular high frequency noise. The new method performed well compared to a typical time based method particularly in terms of robustness against distortions introduced by the recording system and in terms of the ability of parameters extracted in this manner to differentiate three discrete voice qualities. Results from this study are very promising for the new method and offer a way of extracting a set of non-redundant spectral parameters that may be very useful in both recognition and synthesis systems. © 2010 ISCA.

The paper presents a context-based arithmetic coder's VLSI architecture used in SPIHT with reduced memory, which is used for high speed real-time applications. For hardware implementation, a dedicated context model is proposed for the coder. Each context can be processed in parallel and high speed operators are used for interval calculations. An embedded register array is used for cumulative frequency update. As a result, the coder can consume one symbol at each clock cycle. After FPGA synthesis and simulation, the throughput of our coder is comparable with those of similar hardware architectures used in ASIC technology. Especially, the memory capacity of the coder is smaller than those of corresponding systems. © 2010 SPIE.
