We investigate the use of facial depth data of a speaking subject, captured by the Kinect device, as an additional speech-informative modality to incorporate to a traditional audiovisual automatic speech recognizer. We present our feature extraction algorithm for both visual and accompanying depth modalities, based on a discrete cosine transform of the mouth region-of-interest data, further transformed by a two-stage linear discriminant analysis projection to incorporate speech dynamics and improve classification. For automatic speech recognition utilizing the three availab.e data streams (audio, visual, and depth), we consider both the feature and decision fusion paradigms, the latter via a state-synchronous tri-stream hidden Markov model. We report multi-speaker recognition results on a small-vocabulary task employing our recently collected bilingual audio-visual corpus with depth information, demonstrating improved recognition performance by the addition of the proposed depth stream, across a wide range of audio conditions.

Measuring word similarities is a fundamental issue in NLP, while the measuring procedure is always aided by dictionaries or corpus. However, when figurative or metaphor usages are considered, the situation becomes more complicated. Therefore, based on the Chinese-English bilingual lexical cognitive property knowledgebase we constructed, we design several algorithms to compute word similarities by metaphorical properties. Through experiments based on four different algorithms and over 200 word pairs in the knowledgebase, we find the algorithm DSOMP yields better results despite of the differences of word semantic classes and languages. © 2012 IEEE.

This paper presents a new approach for Arabic non-vocalized texts disambiguation based on a possibilistic classifier. A morphological analyzer provides all the possible solutions and the values of the morphological features of words. When texts are vocalized, the number of solutions is reduced and in many cases, we can identify the correct analysis of the input word. The main idea of this paper is to exploit this type of texts in order to learn contextual dependencies between the different values of morphological features modeled as a possibilistic network. This knowledge is used later to disambiguate non-vocalized texts. In order to evaluate our approach, we perform experiments on a corpus of arabic stories. In this paper, we present results concerning the Part-Of-Speech (POS) which is the main morphological feature. Our results are compared to the SVM-based system called MADA.

Spectral envelopes of speech signals are typically obtained by making stationarity assumptions about the signal which are not always valid. The Adaptive Quasi-Harmonic Model (AQHM), a non-stationary signal model, is capable of capturing the time-varying quasi-harmonics in voiced speech. This paper suggests the use of AQHM in a multi-layer scheme which results in a high-resolution time-frequency representation of speech. This representation is then used for the recovery of the evolving spectral envelope and thus, a time-frequency spectral envelope estimation algorithm is introduced related to the Papoulis-Gerchberg algorithm for data extrapolation. Results on voiced speech sounds show that the estimated spectral envelopes are smoother than those estimated by state-of-the-art spectral envelope estimators, while maintaining the important spectral details of the speech spectrum.

Recently, sparse representation has been utilized in many computer vision tasks and adapted for visual tracking. Sparsity-based visual tracking is formulated as searching candidates with minimal reconstruction errors from a template subspace with sparsity constraints in the approximation coefficients. However, an intensity template is easily corrupted by noise and not robust for target tracking under a dynamic environment. The recently proposed covariance region descriptor has been proven robust and versatile for a modest computational cost. Further, the covariance matrix enables efficient fusion of different types of features, where the spatial and statistical properties as well as their correlation are characterized, and its dimension is small. Although the covariance matrix lies on Riemannian manifolds, its log-transformation can be measured on a Euclidean subspace. Based on the covariance region descriptor and using the sparse representation, we propose a novel tracking approach on the Log-Euclidean Riemannian subspace. Specifically, the target region is characterized by a covariance matrix which is then log-transformed from the Riemannian manifold to the Euclidean subspace. After that, the target tracking problem is integrated under a sparse approximation framework, where the sparsity is achieved by solving an 1- regularization problem. Then the candidate with the smallest approximation is taken as the tracked target. For target propagation, we use the Bayesian state inference framework, which propagates sample distributions over time using the particle filter algorithm. To evaluate our method, we have collected several video sequences and the experimental results show that our tracker can achieve robustly and reliably target tracking. © 2011 Springer-Verlag.

The public health system is plagued by inefficient use of resources. Frequently, the results are lengthy patient treatment waiting times. While many solutions for patient scheduling in health systems exist, few address the problem of coordination between independent autonomous departments. In this study, we describe the use of a distributed dynamic constraint optimisation algorithm (Support Based Distributed Optimisation) for the generation and optimisation of schedules across autonomous units. We model the problem of scheduling radiotherapy patients across several independent oncology units as a dynamic distributed constraint optimisation problem. Such an approach minimises the sharing of private information such as department operation details as well as patient privacy information while taking into consideration patient preferences as well as resource utilisation to find a pareto-optimal solution. © 2011 ICST Institute for computer science, Social informatics and Telecommunications Engineering.

Brain functional network studies have demonstrated the small-world topology as the nature of large-scale spontaneous brain activity. Studies have also revealed that the temporal coherence of spontaneous activity could be reshaped during task-dependent (or post-task) resting states within local spatial patterns such as task-related and the default-mode networks. However, to our best knowledge, it is still a lack of rigorous investigations that whether the small-world topology of spontaneous intrinsic organization remains robust and stable during different resting states. To address the problem, we recorded blood oxygen level-dependent (BOLD) signals from two rests (namely, pre- and post-task resting states) before and after a simple semantic-matching task, and investigated the preceding task influences on the topology of the large-scale spontaneous intrinsic organization during the post-task resting state. The major findings are that the small-world configuration of spontaneous intrinsic organization remains robust and stable during resting states regardless of preceding task influences. © 2011 Springer-Verlag.

Biped walking by using all joint movements and DOFs in both directions (sagittal plane and coronal plane) is one of the most complicated research topics in robotics. In this paper, angular trajectories of a stable biped walking for a humanoid robot are generated by a Truncated Fourier Series (TFS) approach. The movements of legs and arms in sagittal plane are implemented by an optimized gait generator and a new model is proposed that can also produce the movement of legs in coronal plane based on TFS. Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) is used to find the best angular trajectories and optimize TFS. Experimental results show that the using joints movements in sagittal and coronal planes to compose the walking skill allowed the biped robot to walk faster than previous methods that only used the joints in sagittal plane. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2011.
