Existing linear projection based hashing methods have witnessed many progresses in finding the approximate nearest neighbor(s) of a given query. They perform well when using a short code. But their code length depends on the original data dimension, thus their performance can not be further improved with higher number of bits for low dimensional data. In addition, in the case of high dimensional data, it is not a good choice to produce each bit by a sign function. In this paper, we propose a novel random forest based approach to cope with the above shortcomings. The bits are obtained by recording the paths when a point traversing each tree in the forest. Then we propose a new metric to calculate the similarity between any two codes. Experimental results on two large benchmark datasets show that our approach outperforms its counterparts and demonstrate its superiority over the existing state-of-the-art hashing methods for descriptor retrieval.

In this paper, a framework on 3D in Style rendering based on 2D texture library is proposed. The major contributions of this paper are speeding up the process of 3D rendering with Chinese ink-style, and presenting a novel way to use the existing ink-painting work. The framework will be helpful for Chinese ink painting's propagation, promotion, and revival. In addition, the proposed framework will benefit the rapid production of cartoon, movies and games with Chinese ink-style. The preliminary experiments show that our method can be successfully provided with fast 3D Chinese ink rendering capability as well as satisfactory rendering results. © 2013 Springer Science+Business media.

Censorship of parts of written text was and is a common practice in totalitarian regimes. It is used to destroy information not approved by the political power. Recovering the censored text is of interest for historical studies of the text. This paper raises the question, whether a censored postcard from 1942 can be made legible by applying multispectral imaging in combination with laser cleaning. In the fields of art conservation (e.g. color measurements), investigation (e.g. analysis of underdrawings in paintings), and historical document analysis, multispectral imaging techniques have been applied successfully to give visibility to information hidden to the human eye. The basic principle of laser cleaning is to transfer laser pulse energy to a contamination layer by an absorption process that leads to heating and evaporation of the layer. Partial laser cleaning of postcards is possible;dirt on the surface can be removed and the obscured pictures and writings made visible again. We applied both techniques to the postcard. The text could not be restored since the original ink seems to have suffered severe chemical damage. © 2013 Springer-Verlag.

Abnormal inactivity indicates situations, where elderly need assistance. Systems detecting the need for help models the amount of inactivity using inactivity profiles. Depending on the analysis of the profiles, events (e.g. falls) or long-term changes (decrease of mobility) are detected. Until now, inactivity profiles are only used to detect abnormal behavior on the short-term (e.g. fall, illness), but not on the long-term. Hence, this work introduces an approach to detect significant changes on mobility using long-term inactivity profiles, since these changes indicate enhanced or decreased mobility of elderly. Preliminary results are obtained by the analysis of the motion data of an elderly couple over the duration of 100 days and illustrates the feasibility of this approach. © Springer International Publishing 2013.

Falls are a major risk for the elderly and where immediate help is needed. The elderly, especially when suffering from dementia, are not able to react to emergency situations properly, thus falls need to be detected automatically. An overview of different classes of fall detection approaches is presented and a vision-based approach is introduced. We propose the use of a Kinect to obtain 3D data in combination with fuzzy logic for robust fall detection and show that our approach outperforms current state-of-the-art algorithms. Our approach is evaluated on 72 video sequences, containing 40 falls and 32 activities of daily living. © 2013 Springer-Verlag.

The recent use of attributes for various problems like object classification, object description and image retrieval produced promising results. The data sets are developed in which images are annotated with the attributes of objects instead of the category names. Attributes performed better than low-level features for cross-category generalization on several data sets. These data sets opened the avenues for potential research in computer vision and image understanding based on attributes. Therefore it is quite necessary to get an overview of the attributes, the way they work and data sets annotated with attributes. In this work we provide an overview of various solutions based on attributes, the availab.e data sets that are annotated with the attributes and future directions for some potential problems where attributes may perform better than low-level features.

The increasing amount of medical imaging data acquired in clinical practice holds a tremendous body of diagnostically relevant information. Only a small portion of these data are accessible during clinical routine or research due to the complexity, richness, high dimensionality and size of the data. There is consensus in the community that leaps in this regard are hampered by the lack of large bodies of data shared across research groups and an associated definition of joint challenges on which development can focus. In this paper we describe the objectives of the project Visceral. It will provide the means to jump-start this process by providing access to unprecedented amounts of real world imaging data annotated through experts and by using a community effort to generate a large corpus of automatically generated standard annotations. To this end, Visceral will conduct two competitions that tackle large scale medical image data analysis in the fields of anatomy detection, and content-based image retrieval, in this case the retrieval of similar medical cases using visual data and textual radiology reports. © 2013 Springer-Verlag.

Facial aging effects can be perceived in two main forms;the first one is the growth related transformations and the second one is the textural variations. Therefore, in order to generate an efficient age classifier, both shape and texture information should be used together. In this work, we present an age estimation system that uses the fusion of geometric features (ratios of distance values between facial landmark points) and textural features (filter responses of the face image pixel values). First the probabilities of a face image belonging to each overlapping age groups are calculated by a group of classifiers. Then an interpolation based technique is used to produce the final estimated age. Many different textural features and geometric features were compared in this study. The results of the experiments show that the fusion with the geometric features increases the performance of the textural features and the highest age estimation rates are obtained using the fusion of Local Gabor Binary Patterns and Geometric features with overlapping age groups. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2013.

Information about people, places and events are examples of social data. These social data, widely spread on the Internet, are also displayed by directories directly in the physical world, enhancing interactivity and guiding people at a specific location. However, they are usually large, and reading these directories is time-consuming because they are not personalized, with information unrelated to a person's needs. Moreover these social data are static and may be irrelevant for many readers. This paper presents a new cyber-physical system: the cyber-physical directory, which provides a user with a customised and dynamic visualization of social data. An algorithm, based on the similarity between people and social data, finds which data are relevant to a specific user and displays them by using tag cloud techniques. The system is successfully tested with a real dataset from Foursquare, and an implementation is presented. © 2013 IEEE.

Finding a parking place in a busy city centre is often a frustrating task for many drivers;time and fuel are wasted in the quest for a vacant spot and traffic in the area increases due to the slow moving vehicles circling around. In this paper, we present the results of a survey on the needs of drivers from parking infrastructures from a smart services perspective. As smart parking systems are becoming a necessity in today's urban areas, we discuss the latest trends in parking availab.lity monitoring, parking reservation and dynamic pricing schemes. We also examine how these schemes can be integrated forming technologically advanced parking infrastructures whose aim is to benefit both the drivers and the parking operators alike. © 2013 IEEE.
