Segmenting page images into text lines is a crucial pre-processing step for automated reading of historical documents. Challenging issues in this open research field are given e.g. by paper or parchment background noise, ink bleed-through, artifacts due to aging, stains, and touching text lines. In this paper, we present a novel binarization-free line segmentation method that is robust to noise and copes with overlapping and touching text lines. First, interest points representing parts of characters are extracted from gray-scale images. Next, word clusters are identified in high-density regions and touching components such as ascenders and descenders are separated using seam carving. Finally, text lines are generated by concatenating neighboring word clusters, where neighborhood is defined by the prevailing orientation of the words in the document. An experimental evaluation on the Latin manuscript images of the Saint Gall database shows promising results for real-world applications in terms of both accuracy and efficiency. © 2012 IEEE.

Augmented Reality systems that run interactively and in real time, using high quality graphical displays and sensational cues, can create the illusion of virtual objects appearing to be real. This paper presents the design and implementation of BurnAR, a demonstration which enables users to experience the illusion of seeing their own hands burning, which we achieve by overlaying virtual flames and smoke on their hands. Surprisingly, some users reported an involuntary warming sensation of their hands. © 2012 IEEE.

We propose a novel method to estimate a unique and repeatable reference frame in the context of 3D object recognition from a single viewpoint based on global descriptors. We show that the ability of defining a robust reference frame on both model and scene views allows creating descriptive global representations of the object view, with the beneficial effect of enhancing the spatial descriptiveness of the feature and its ability to recognize objects by means of a simple nearest neighbor classifier computed on the descriptor space. Moreover, the definition of repeatable directions can be deployed to efficiently retrieve the 6DOF pose of the objects in a scene. We experimentally demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method on a dataset including 23 scenes acquired with the Microsoft Kinect sensor and 25 full-3D models by comparing the proposed approach with state-of-the-art global descriptors. A substantial improvement is presented regarding accuracy in recognition and 6DOF pose estimation, as well as in terms of computational performance. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

This paper proposes a switched control algorithm for distributed cooperative manipulation of rigid bodies in a planar setting. More specifically, we consider the problem of making a grasped object follow a desired position and orientation path. The system contains N robots, possibly of heterogeneous designs, each of which consists of a manipulator arm and a nonholonomic mobile platform. Control is based on local information, is carried out on a kinematic level and partly utilizes inverse kinematics. We use Lyapunov-like arguments to prove that the algorithm is almost globally stable and also show that its parameters can be chosen so that any input saturation level is met. The time between certain switches is proved to be bounded below, and the system is shown to be free of any Zeno behavior. © 2012 IFAC.

Elderly usually have fears arising from themselves and their home environment. About 50 percent of the elderly suffer from fear of falling. A number of them suffer from fear of cooking as they can cause fire, fear of using water as they can cause flooding and so on. These fears in general yield in a low self-efficacy causing less activity. This paper presents the FEARLESS (fear elimination as resolution for loosing elderly's substantial sorrows) system that will help enhance the participation of elderly in social life and their mobility at home. Robust detection algorithms for falls, smoke and fire based on fusion of audio and image processing approaches, enable the emergency services and relatives to get automatically alerted in case of urgency. The system applies passive sensors for it to remain effective even in case of inability of pressing an alarm button and not to impair the mobility of the user as the wearable sensors do. The system able to detect automatically falls, fire, smoke and unusual behavior in the elderly environments will be developed. This system is conceived for a global deployment. The implementation of such a complex system will be enabled thanks to the features of the robust telematics platform. Moreover, the strategy for the fast adoption of the product by the market which consists of integrating an important part of the supply chain will be described. The proposed system will improve the feeling of safety for the elderly, thus reducing their fears. As a result, elderly will participate actively in the self-serve society which directly will influence their wellbeing. © 2012 IADIS.

Biologically inspired algorithms (neural networks, evolutionary computation, swarm intelligence, etcetera) are commonly applied in development of digital games. We argue that there are opportunities and possibilities for integrating real biological organisms inside computer games, with potential added value to the game's player, developer and integrated organism. In this approach, live organisms are an integral part of digital gaming technology or player experience. To spark further thought and research into the concept of hybrid biological-digital games, we present an overview of its opportunities for creating computer games. Opportunities are categorized by their mainly affected stakeholder: game player, game designer, and bio-digital integrated organism. We clarify the categorization via numerous examples of existing hybrid bio-digital games. Based on our review work we present conclusions about the current state and future outlook for hybrid bio-digital games. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

Aging progress of a person is influenced by many factors such as genetics, health, lifestyle, and even weather conditions. Therefore human age estimation from a face image is a challenging problem. Aging causes significant variations in facial shape and texture across years. In order to construct a general age classifier, shape and texture information of human face should be used together. In this paper, we propose a new age estimation system that uses a number of overlapping age groups and a classifier that combine geometric and textural facial features. The classifier scoring results are interpolated to produce the estimated age. We tested many geometric and textural facial features with age group classifiers. Comparative experiments show that the best performance is obtained using the fusion of Local Gabor Binary Patterns and Geometric features.

It is well known that it is difficult for local stereo algorithms to obtain correct disparities at occluded regions and depth discontinuities. In order to increase matching accuracy, current algorithms always use some disparity refinement measures. An adaptive algorithm to refine disparities based on color and distances has got good results but still not satisfactory. This paper proposes a simple and novel method which employs disparity inheritance within above algorithm, further improving the accuracy and robustness of stereo correspondence. According to our experimental results on Middlebury images, disparity inheritance can connect regions at different depths, and implement the diffusion of initial disparities from accurate areas to less accurate areas. Disparities are obviously improved especially at occlusion areas and depth discontinuities, and we get disparity maps with sharper edges. © 2012 IEEE.

There is an increasing desire to remain connected when physically distant and computer-mediated communication (CMC) is one means of satisfying this desire. In particular, there is a growing trend for individuals to use commercially availab.e technology to connect with friends and family in social and leisure settings. Drawing on this trend, performative arts and existing telecommunications research, we identify the social practice of sharing a meal together as ripe for reinterpretation within CMC. We explore the opportunities to design a technology platform that supports remote guests in experiencing togetherness and playfulness within the practices of a traditional dinner party. Through both visual and aural channels as well as remote agency, the dinner guests were able to share a holistic telematic dining experience comparable to a traditional co-presence dinner. Based on the findings, we propose that one must consider the social structure and cultural background of users to inform the design of a technological intervention. © 2012 ACM.

Image re-ranking aims at improving the precision of keyword-based image retrieval, mainly by introducing visual features to re-rank. Many existing approaches require offline training for every keyword, which are unsuitable for online image search. Other real-time approaches demand user interaction, which are inappropriate for large-scale image collection. To improve the accuracy of web image retrieval in a practicable manner, we propose a novel re-ranking algorithm to explore the cluster information of the image set. First, we build spectral graph on images that retrieved bysearch engine, and remove isolated nodes as noisy images. Then, we select positive samples from the most dominant cluster in initial top-ranked images, and the samples are used for semi-supervised learning and ranking. Our algorithm is online and non-feedback. Experiments on two public databases demonstrate that our algorithm outperforms the state-of-the-art approaches. © 2012 ACM.
