This paper describes a method for estimating the amplitude characteristics of poles common to multiple room transfer functions from musical audio signals received by multiple microphones. Knowledge of these pole characteristics would make it easier to manipulate audio equalizers, since they correspond to the room resonance. It has been proven that an estimate of the poles can be calculated precisely when a source signal is white. However, if a source signal is colored as in the case of a musical audio signal, the estimate is degraded by the frequency characteristics originally contained in the source signal. In this paper, we consider that an amplitude spectrum of a musical audio signal consists of its envelope and fine structure. We assume that musical pieces can be classified into several categories according to their average amplitude spectral envelopes. Based on this assumption, the amplitude spectral envelope of the musical audio signal can be obtained from prior knowledge of the average amplitude spectral envelope of a musical piece category into which the target piece is classified. On the other hand, the fine structure is identified based on its time variance. By removing both the spectral envelope and the fine structure from the amplitude spectrum estimated with the conventional method, the amplitude characteristics of the acoustical poles can be extracted. Simulation results for 20 popular songs revealed that our method was capable of estimating the amplitude characteristics of the acoustical poles with a spectral distortion of 3.11 dB. In particular, most of the spectral peaks, corresponding to the room resonance modes, were successfully detected. Image relighting is a very unique special visual effect which promises to have many important practical applications. Image relighting is essentially the process of, given one or more images of some scene, computing what that scene would look like under some other (arbitrary) lighting conditions, e.g., changing positions and colors of light sources. Image relighting can for example be used for interior light design. This paper describes an approach to image relighting which can be implemented to run in real-time by utilizing graphics hardware, as opposed to other state-of-the-art approaches which at best run at a few frames per second © The Eurographics Association 2005.

In this paper, we present a new dichromatic-based method for estimating illuminant chromaticity using a single image. In the proposed method, specular pixels are roughly extracted from an input image and projected into the three-dimensional dichromatic line space according to their image chromaticities and dichromatic slopes. Reliable dichromatic lines are then obtained by detecting local maxima in the dichromatic line space. Illuminant chromaticity is finally estimated by finding the intersections of the resulting dichromatic lines. The proposed method has some advantages. The proposed method can deal with highly textured images since it does not require precise color segmentation. In addition, the proposed method does not suffer from nearly parallel dichromatic lines and it can estimate artificial illuminant chromaticity. © 2005 IEEE.

Matching musical instrument tones is a classic problem in computer music. Previous work has shown various noniterative methods to be successful. Iterative methods, where the basis spectra are found one by one over several iterations, have received much less attention. Iterative methods are more efficient, with a linear running time. Several iterative methods are evaluated and compared. Matching results for a range of instruments show, surprisingly, that iterative local search can find matches comparable to near-optimal noniterative matches. As an added advantage, iterative local search offers real-time control of the number of wavetables, allowing computation and memory efficiency, and good matching accuracy.

This paper presents a new algorithm for detecting user-selected objects in a sequence of images based on adaptively lifted wavelet transforms. In our algorithm, we first select a set of object features in the wavelet transform domain and then build a new transform by using the selected features. The new wavelet transform is constructed based on adaptive prediction in a lifting scheme structure. Adaptive prediction is performed such that, the large coefficients in the high-pass component of the old transform, vanish in the high-pass component of the new transform. Finally, both of the old and new transforms are applied to a given test image and the transform domain coefficients are compared for detecting the object of interest. We have verified our claim with experimental results on real images. Copyright © 2005 Inderscience Enterprises Ltd.

In this paper, we propose a design of multi-view stereoscopic HD video transmission system based on MPEG-21 Digital Item Adaptation (DIA). It focuses on the compatibility and scalab.lity to meet various user preferences and terminal capabilities. There exist a large variety of multi-view 3D HD video types according to the methods for acquisition, display, and processing. By following the MPEG-21 DIA framework, the multi-view stereoscopic HD video is adapted according to user feedback. A user can be served multi-view stereoscopic video which corresponds with his or her preferences and terminal capabilities. In our preliminary prototype, we verify that the proposed design can support two deferent types of display device (stereoscopic and auto-stereoscopic) and switching viewpoints between two availab.e viewpoints.

An ECG signal is composed of many similar beats which makes it to behave semi-periodic. This paper deals with beat variation periods and exploits the correlation between cycles (inter-beat) and correlation within each cycle (intra-beat) for compression. For efficient compression a 2-dimensional array is constructed from the one dimensional ECG signal using decimation and interpolation in the discrete cosine transform (DCT) domain. Since reasonable results in image compression have been achieved by means of set partitioning in hierarchical trees (SPIHT) algorithm, we use SPIHT algorithm to code the 2-D wavelet transform of the ECG signals. Experimental results on selected records of ECG from the MIT-BIH arrhythmia database indicate that the proposed algorithm is significantly more efficient than those schemes previously proposed for ECG compression. In the H.264/AVC video codec, multiple reference frames are applied for motion estimation to provide good coding efficiency. However, multiple reference frames also require more memory cost than one reference frame used in a video codec. To minimize the amount of memory requirement, this work proposes to add a decision unit in the H.264/AVC codec to store these reference frames. The said decision unit would look closely at MacroBlock (MB) of the currently decoded frame to determine it's storage type to be compressed or reconstructed data, according to the encoding parameters of subblocks in this MB. Furthermore, an adaptive scheme is proposed to store the currently decoded frame as reconstructed picture for lowering the computational complexity and using the buffer in full. Experimental results reveal that the proposed memory reduction scheme requires lower complexity and better picture quality than the conventional work. Therefore, the proposed memory reduction scheme can be widely used in various applications of the H.264/AVC codec to minimize the memory requirement. © 2005 IEEE.

We present a new fast algorithm for background modeling and subtraction. Sample background values at each pixel are quantized into codebooks which represent a compressed form of background model for a long image sequence. This allows us to capture structural background variation due to periodic-like motion over a long period of time under limited memory. Our method can handle scenes containing moving backgrounds or illumination variations (shadows and highlights), and it achieves robust detection for compressed videos. We compared our method with other multimode modeling techniques. ©2004 IEEE.

Recently, there has been much progress in wearable computing. Input/output interface and security are important research areas in wearable computing. In this paper, we describe considerations which should be taken into account in designing a wearable interface and iris recognition system. One of the most important issues in designing a wearable iris recognition system is the radial lens distortion. We suggest a radial distortion elimination method which is simple but accurate. Experimental results show that the quality of the image captured by our system is good enough for iris recognition and we can achieve 0.18% of the EER by applying our proposed radial distortion elimination method. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2004.
