Recently, there has been an increase of interest in the social impact of virtual reality technologies, as virtual worlds experienced an increase of their popularity in various social groups (teenagers, businesses). The growing trend for people to spend more time in suchlike virtual spaces implies a demand for intelligent virtual environments, that could mimic the real world as a simulation and provide functionalities and tools for behaviour analysis and adaptation to user preferences. Within the context of e-government, this paper presents the ongoing project +Spaces, which is developing a range of virtual environment tools. The platform architecture is presented and technical challenges involved in creating intelligent virtual spaces for e-government as well as draft policies to be used in role-playing simulations are discussed.

Optical flow switching is a promising technology for future optical network data transport. This paper presents the research on control and management mechanism of an optical network testbed based on flow switching. A control and management system of this testbed is designed and implemented to perform routing and network resource scheduling. The functional modules of the control and management plane in the testbed and related critical design issues are presented. In addition, the network performance of the testbed is experimentally tested and compared with the simulation results. Furthermore, we analyze the key factor influencing the network performance based on the control and management mechanism. © Springer-Verlag 2012.

The integration of post-wimp computer interfaces arises as an alternative to meet the individual limitations of each modality, considering both interaction components and the feedbacks to users. Tangible interfaces can present restrictions referring to physical space on tabletop architectures, which limits the manipulation of objects and deprecates the interactive process. Hence, this paper proposes the integration of techniques of mobile Augmented Reality with tabletop tangible architecture for blending real and virtual components on its surface, aiming to make the interactive process richer, seamless and more complete. © 2012 IEEE.

Among several techniques proposed for indoor positioning using IEEE 802.11 Wireless Fidelity (Wi-Fi) based networks, those that rely on fingerprinting have been demonstrated to outperform those based on lateration, angulation, and cell of origin in terms of accuracy. We compare and evaluate three Wi-Fi fingerprinting techniques that use the K-Nearest Neighbor (k-NN), Naive Bayes Classifier (NBC) and Support Vector Machine (SVM) algorithms. Our experiments show that SVM-based fingerprinting outperformed both k-NN and NBC-based fingerprinting, achieving accuracies of 2 meters or better within our testbed. © 2011 IEEE.

Self-healing optical access networks (SHOAN) operated by optical switching technologies

An optical access network should offer low-cost reliable services to its end users. To address this problem, an optimal solution is needed which can turn an optical access architecture into a self-healing system. Hence, we propose the Self-Healing Optical Access Network (SHOAN), in which two or more optical access architectures are partners of each other, and they are interconnected by elementary optical crossbar switches into a simple mesh network. In SHOAN, the crossbar switches can keep each access architecture as an independent and closed system for only serving its own end users in normal state. But the crossbars become open in fault scenarios. Whenever a failure occurs in the network, the fault can be monitored and affected services can be recovered by the partner of the access architecture that is affected. Such an interconnected optical access network can withstand failures in its transmission paths, and recover network services in a self-healing way. Compared to existing solutions (e.g., dual-home architecture), illustrative examples demonstrate that SHOAN has many desirable properties: (1) it is robust because risks are disjointed, (2) it is reliable because service recovery is given top priority, and (3) it has low cost because redundant backup components are not necessary since the partner's resources act as backup resources. Analysis results show that SHOAN can minimize disruption duration and network cost for broadband access services. © 2011 IEEE.

This paper presents a new approach to coordinating clusters of fail-over storage servers. The proposed protocol is designed for supporting large scale on-line storage services which positioned for strong consistency and high availab.lity. Without sacrificing much performance, the protocol requires only one round-trip message communication with redundant servers. A distributed file system with single centralized master extended with this protocol confirms its efficiency as tens of thousands of operations per second and high availab.lity of 99.9995%. © 2011 IEEE.

In future high-capacity wavelength division multiplexed (WDM) optical networks;the failure of a network component such as a fiber link can lead to severe disruption in the networks' traffic. Hence, it is imperatively important to provide fast and 100 protection in WDM optical networks. In this paper, a Hop-Limited p-Cycle-based approach is employed for protected working capacity envelope (PWCE) design. The results reveal the cycle hop not only affects the total protected working units but also the blocking probability performance. © 2011 The Journal of China Universities of Posts and Telecommunications.
