The paper proposes a throughput and energy-aware medium-access-control protocol for wireless sensor networks. The proposed approach provides a sleeping-time adjustment scheme to flexibly adjust the sleep time to reduce the wasted energy in a low-traffic network and increase the throughput in a high-traffic network. The sleeping and waking durations are determined using time counters rather than time slots. A waking-time sharing scheme is responsible for establishing the common waking time among a group of neighbors for group communication. The proposed protocol solves the energy inefficiency caused by idle listening. Simulation experiments have been performed to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach compared to some other energy-aware medium-access-control protocols.

Some of the key issues in building services for large scale distributedsystems, realizing Vishwa, a peer-to-peer (P2P) middleware architecture for developing grid applications are discussed. Researchers are producing large amounts of scientific data and believe that distributed computations on the data must be scheduled and availab.e to a large number of scientists. It is suggested that the platform must scale up to a large number of nodes and data units in the system and must also be scalab.e geographically. A scalab.e, reconfigurable shared-object space over the two-layer architecture can be developed that incorporates mechanisms to maintain replicated data and must also provide a shared-object abstraction over a wide-area distributed system.

Scalab.lity is an important issue in the construction of distributedsystems. A number of theoretical and experimental studies have been made on scalab.lity of distributedsystems. However, they have been either studies on specific technologies or have studied scalab.lity in isolation. The main conjecture of our work is that scalab.lity must be perceived along with the related issues of availab.lity, synchronization and consistency. In this context, we propose a scalab.lity model which characterizes scalab.lity as being dependent on these factors as well as the workload and faultload. The model is generic and can be used to compare scalab.lity of similar systems. We illustrate this by a comparison between NFS and AFS, two well known distributed file systems. The model is also useful in identifying scalab.lity bottlenecks in distributedsystems. We have applied the model to optimize Virat, a wide-area shared object space that we have built.
