Convolution kernels support the modeling of complex syntactic information in machinelearning tasks. However, such models are highly sensitive to the type and size of syntactic structure used. It is therefore an important challenge to automatically identify high impact sub-structures relevant to a given task. In this paper we present a systematic study investigating (combinations of) sequence and convolution kernels using different types of substructures in document-level sentiment classification. We show that minimal sub-structures extracted from constituency and dependency trees guided by a polarity lexicon show 1.45 point absolute improvement in accuracy over a bag-of-words classifier on a widely used sentiment corpus. © 2012 Association for Computational Linguistics.

Energy consumption is an important issue in the design and use of networks. In this paper, we explore energy savings in networks via a rate adaptation model. This model can be represented by a cost-minimization network routing problem with discrete cost functions. We formulate this problem as an integer program, which is proved to be NP-hard. Then a constant approximation algorithm is developed. In our proposed method, we first transform the program into a continuous-cost network routing problem, and then we approximate the optimal solution by a two-step rounding process. We show by analysis that, for uniform demands, our method provides a constant approximation for the uniform network routing problem with discrete costs. A bicriteria network routing problem is also developed so that a trade-off can be made between energy consumption and network delay. Analytical results for this latter model are also presented. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

This paper presents an extension of Chiang's hierarchical phrase-based (HPB) model, called Head-Driven HPB (HD-HPB), which incorporates head information in translation rules to better capture syntax-driven information, as well as improved reordering between any two neighboring non-terminals at any stage of a derivation to explore a larger reordering search space. Experiments on Chinese-English translation on four NIST MT test sets show that the HD-HPB model significantly outperforms Chiang's model with average gains of 1.91 points absolute in BLEU. © 2012 Association for Computational Linguistics.

In recent years, WSN (Wireless Sensor Network) technology has been developed rapidly, and been widely used in the fields of industry, agriculture, medicine and so on. To solve the low communication rate and short-distance data transmission in the current temperature and humidity monitoring system, this paper designs a temperature and humidity remote monitoring system based on WSN technology. In this system, microprocessor Atmega128L is adopted as the control core of network node, and wireless transceiver module nRF905 is used to realize wireless data transmission. The data of temperature and humidity is sampled by using digital temperature sensor DS18B20 and humidity sensor SHT75 in the system. The proposed network protocol in this paper not only can realize long-rang wireless data transmission, but also can realize self-organizing and manual networking. The results of practical test show that this system has the stable and reliable performance and the advantage of scalab.lity.

Chiang's hierarchical phrase-based (HPB) translation model advances the state-of-the-art in statistical machine translation by expanding conventional phrases to hierarchical phrases - phrases that contain sub-phrases. However, the original HPB model is prone to overgeneration due to lack of linguistic knowledge: the grammar may suggest more derivations than appropriate, many of which may lead to ungrammatical translations. On the other hand, limitations of glue grammar rules in the original HPB model may actually prevent systems from considering some reasonable derivations. This paper presents a simple but effective translation model, called the Head-Driven HPB (HD-HPB) model, which incorporates head information in translation rules to better capture syntax-driven information in a derivation. In addition, unlike the original glue rules, the HD-HPB model allows improved reordering between any two neighboring non-terminals to explore a larger reordering search space. An extensive set of experiments on Chinese-English translation on four NIST MT test sets, using both a small and a large training set, show that our HDHPB model consistently and statistically significantly outperforms Chiang's model as well as a source side SAMT-style model. ©2012 Association for Computational Linguistics.

In this paper, an efficient two-stage segmentation framework was proposed to address the plant leaf image with overlapping phenomenon, which is built based on the leaf approximate symmetry and level set evolution theory. In the pre-segmentation stage, a straight line was manually set on the target leaf to approximate the principal leaf vein and the Local Chan-Vese (LCV) model was used on the global image region to help searching the so-called un-overlapping contour in target leaf. In the formal segmentation stage, the symmetry detection was performed based on the pre-defined approximated principal vein to obtain the narrow-band evolution region and the second initial contour. Next, the LCV model was once again used to find the complete target leaf contour in the narrow-band evolution region. Finally, experiments on some real leaf images with overlapping phenomenon have demonstrated the efficiency and robustness of the proposed segmentation framework. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

There are a number of leaf recognition methods, but most of them are based on Euclidean space. In this paper, we will introduce a new description of feature for the leaf image recognition, which represents the leaf contour with the ordered sequence. For a leaf image, points on the contour represent the most important information of the leaf. Thus, by extracting serial points of the leaf contour, the unique corresponding ordered sequence can be obtained for a contour. Then, we can compute the amplitude-frequency feature by performing the Discrete Fourier transform on the ordered sequence. Since the low-frequency part of the Fourier transform represents the global information and the high-frequency part the local details, we can adopt the amplitude-frequency feature for leaf image recognition. Experimental results on the famous Swedish library and ICL library show that the proposed feature is effective for leaf image recognition. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

Block transform coding using discrete cosine transform is the most popular approach for image compression. However, many annoying blocking artifacts are generated due to coarse quantization on transform coefficients independently. This paper proposes an effective blocking artifacts reduction method by estimating the transform coefficients from their quantized version. In the proposed scheme, we estimate the transform coefficients based on an image statistic model and non-local similarity among blocks in transform domain. The parameters used in our proposed scheme are discussed and adaptively selected. Extensive experimental results show that our proposed method significantly reduces blocking artifacts and improves the subjective and the objective quality of block transform coded images. © 2012 IEEE.

The conventional differential space-frequency codes (DSFC) based on cyclic delay diversity (CDD) only could achieve the same transmission rate with that of a single transmit antenna system, the spectral efficiency was low. To improve the spectral efficiency in a non-coherent multiple antenna system, the advantage of CDD is considered fully in this paper and then a rate-embedded differential space-frequency coding scheme based on grouped CDD is proposed. In the proposed scheme, all transmit antennas are partitioned into several groups firstly, the conventional cyclic delays are adopted to achieve spatial diversity in each group, those symbols among different groups are transmitted differentially with low rate and high rate message matrices alternately, consequently high rate transmission is obtained. Simulation results verify that, compared with the conventional DSFC based on CDD, the proposed coding scheme can achieve obviously higher transmission rates and better error performances. © 2012 Binary Information Press January 2012.

PLSA(Probabilistic Latent Semantic Analysis) is a popular topic modeling technique for exploring document collections. Due to the increasing prevalence of large datasets, there is a need to improve the scalab.lity of computation in PLSA. In this paper, we propose a parallel PLSA algorithm called PPLSA to accommodate large corpus collections in the MapReduce framework. Our solution efficiently distributes computation and is relatively simple to implement. © 2012 IFIP International Federation for Information processing.
