One of the widely used models for studying economics of climate change is the Dynamic Integrated model of Climate and Economy (DICE), which has been developed by Professor William Nordhaus, one of the laureates of the 2018 Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences. Originally a single-objective optimal control problem has been defined on DICE dynamics, which is aimed to maximize the social welfare. In this paper, a bi-objective optimal control problem defined on DICE model, objectives of which are maximizing social welfare and minimizing the temperature deviation of atmosphere. This multi-objective optimal control problem solved using Non-Dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm II (NSGA-II) also it is compared to previous works on single-objective version of the problem. The resulting Pareto front rediscovers the previous results and generalizes to a wide range of non-dominant solutions to minimize the global temperature deviation while optimizing the economic welfare. The previously used single-objective approach is unable to create such a variety of possibilities, hence, its offered solution is limited in vision and reachable performance. Beside this, resulting Pareto-optimal set reveals the fact that temperature deviation cannot go below a certain lower limit, unless we have significant technology advancement or positive change in global conditions. Part error will cause the assembly contact state between parts to deviate from the nominal state, resulting in error accumulation and propagation. Therefore, reasonable tolerance has to be applied to control the corresponding errors. Currently there are a number of tolerance analysis methods, however, most of them typically only consider dimensional and geometrical tolerances in the design phase. Analysis results without considering part deformation which was commonly observed in the realistic working conditions could lead to possible assembly failures. In this paper, both manufacturing and deformation errors are taken into account to establish a more comprehensive deviation calculation model based on Polytope-Skin Model Shape method. The total assembly error can be determined by calculating the Minkowski sum. The effectiveness of the proposed method is verified in a case study about an assembly of one-joint manipulator in which the external force is the cause of the change on part shape and size. © 2020 The Authors. Modeling and simulation of electromagnetic devices, such as mobile phones, operating at millimeter wavelengths, e.g., at 30GHz, is challenging because the dimensions of the platform are typically large as compared to the operating wavelength. In this work, we propose several strategies for addressing the issue of CPU time and memory consumption, while preserving the accuracy of the computation. This include geometry simplification as well as application of a numerical algorithm for memory reduction and GPU acceleration. Memory reduction is achieved by employing an efficient iteration-free technique called the Characteristic Basis Functions Method (CBFM) proposed in [1] , to solve problems involving a large number of degrees of freedom. The CBFM has been extensively investigated by a number of authors, including [2] , to analyze objects embedded in multi-layered media.

Cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) has become a mainstream technology for solving spatial structures of biomacromolecules, while the processing of cryo-EM images is a very challenging task. One of the great challenges is the high noise in the images. A common method is to cluster the images with close projecting angles to get mean images, which are used for 3D reconstruction. However, due to the extremely low signal-to-noise-ratio, common clustering methods often fail to obtain high-quality mean images, leading to poorly reconstructed structures. In this study, we present a new unsupervised learning framework, called NiuEM, to discriminate images captured from different angles and yield cluster-mean images. NiuEM first generates pseudo-lab.ls and then exploits both contrastive loss and cross-entropy loss for training convolutional layers to learn feature representations. Moreover, the pseudo-lab.ls are updated iteratively to enhance the reliability of lab.ls. We assess the performance of NiuEM on four data sets via both visualized and quantitative experiments. Especially, two kinds of metrics are adopted to measure the performance, regarding the clustering quality and the resolution of reconstructed 3D models, respectively. The experimental results show that NiuEM achieves very competitive clustering accuracy in the comparison with the state-of-the-art image clustering methods. Moreover, the cluster mean images yielded by NiuEM lead to better initial 3D models compared with the mainstream reconstruction tools. © 2020 IEEE.

This paper proposes integrated guidance and control design to intercept a non-maneuvering target at a pre-specified time of interception. The problem is addressed considering nonlinear engagement kinematics and the interceptor is steered using the combined effects of canard as well as tail configurations (dual control interceptors). Different formulations of time-to-go, without the restrictive assumption of interceptor’s small heading angle, have been used in deriving the guidance commands, allowing the proposed strategies to remain effective over a wide range of impact time values. A weighted effort allocation scheme, in canard and tail deflections, has been proposed to generate the required lateral acceleration. The overall design uses sliding mode control owing to its simplicity of design. Finally, simulations are presented for various scenarios, including impaired actuator, vindicating the efficacy of the proposed technique. © 2020, CC BY-NC-SA.

The performance of mobile multi-robot systems dramatically depends on the mutual awareness of individual robots, particularly the positions of other robots. GPS and motion capture cameras are commonly used to acquire and ultimately communicate positions of robots. Such sensing schemes depend on infrastructure and restrict the capabilities of a multi-robot system, e.g., the robots cannot operate in both indoor and outdoor environments. Conversely, peer-to-peer localization algorithms can be used to free the robots from such infrastructures. In such systems, robots use on-board sensing to infer the positions of nearby robots. In this approach, it is essential to have a model of the motion of other robots. We introduce a flocking localization scheme that takes into account motion behavior exhibited by the other robots. The proposed scheme depends only on the robots' on-board sensors and computational capabilities and yields a more accurate localization solution than the peer-to-peer localization algorithms that do not take into account the flocking behavior. We verify the performance of our scheme in simulations and demonstrate experiments on two unmanned aerial vehicles.

In order to optimize the orthogonal design of MIMO radar waveform, an improved algorithm based on niche genetic algorithm is proposed. The algorithm is able to eliminate individuals with similar structures in the population or data, maintain a certain distance between individuals, and effectively hold the diversity of them It thus eliminates the phenomenon of premature convergence, strengthens the global search ability of the algorithm, and improves its convergence speed. It is shown that the algorithm has both the advantages of overall search ability of genetic algorithm and the ability of the niche genetic algorithm to discover multiple optimal solutions. Simulation was given to show that the algorithm was cable to reduce the side-lobe of the auto-correlation function of the orthogonal polyphase code and the peak value of the cross-correlation function of the code with good performance of autocorrelation and cross-correlation obtained

ESND: An embedding-based framework for signed network dismantling

Network dismantling aims to maximize the disintegration of a network by removing a specific set of nodes or edges and is applied to various tasks in various domains, such as cracking down on crime organizations, delaying the propagation of rumors, and blocking the transmission of viruses. Most of the current network dismantling methods are tailored for unsigned networks, which only consider the connection between nodes without evaluating the nature of the relationships, such as friendship/hostility, enhancing/repressing, and trust/distrust. We here propose an embedding-based algorithm, namely ESND, to solve the signed network dismantling problem. The algorithm generally iterates the following four steps, i.e., giant component detection, network embedding, node clustering, and removal node selection. To illustrate the efficacy and stability of ESND, we conduct extensive experiments on six signed network datasets as well as null models, and compare the performance of our method with baselines. Experimental results consistently show that the proposed ESND is superior to the baselines and displays stable performance with the change in the network structure. Additionally, we examine the impact of sign proportions on network robustness via ESND, observing that networks with a high ratio of negative edges are generally easier to dismantle than networks with high positive edges.

Resonant beam communications (RBCom) is capable of providing wide bandwidth when using light as the carrier. Besides, the RBCom system possesses the characteristics of mobility, high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), and multiplexing. Nevertheless, the channel of the RBCom system is distinct from other light communication technologies due to the echo interference issue. In this paper, we reveal the mechanism of the echo interference and propose the method to eliminate the interference. Moreover, we present an exemplary design based on frequency shifting and optical filtering, along with its mathematic model and performance analysis. The numerical evaluation shows that the channel capacity is greater than 15 bit/s/Hz. Copyright © 2021, The Authors. All rights reserved.

A coupled computational approach to simultaneously learn a vector field and the region of attraction of an equilibrium point from generated trajectories of the system is proposed. The nonlinear identification leverages the local stability information as a prior on the system, effectively endowing the estimate with this important structural property. In addition, the knowledge of the region of attraction plays an experiment design role by informing the selection of initial conditions from which trajectories are generated and by enabling the use of a Lyapunov function of the system as a regularization term. Numerical results show that the proposed method allows efficient sampling and provides an accurate estimate of the dynamics in an inner approximation of its region of attraction.
