To enhance classification performance by making use of easily availab.e unlab.lled data to overcome the scarcity of lab.lled data, this paper proposes an Embedded Co-Adaboost algorithm that integrates multi-view learning into the Adaboost learning framework and at the same time leverages the advantages of Co-training algorithm for performance enhancement. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm in terms of the convergence rate, the accuracy, and the steady performance as compared to the original AdaBoost algorithm, without relying on redundant and sufficient feature sets. As a algorithm application in software engineering, the Embedded Co-AdaBoost has been applied to the classification of software document relations to improve the quality of the architecture design documents and the reusability of design knowledge. © 2012 IEEE.

We introduce a model considering the single-leg revenue management problem from the perspective of online algorithms and competitive analysis. In this model, the price and limitation of bookings are both decision variables. Assuming the process of the customers meets the low-before-high manner and the expected value of customer falls in a closed interval, we analyze the upper bound for deterministic online joint pricing and booking policy and propose one optimal policy for each case. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

In this paper, the discrete-time exponential forgetting factor observer for state affine systems is specialized for the joint estimation of state and parameters, leading to an adaptive observer in which the decay rates of the estimation errors for the two distinct objects to be estimated can be disjoined. Experimental results for the adaptive observation of rotor time constant and stator resistance of an induction motor are presented as example of application. © 2012 IFAC.

Schmid pendulum on the wheeled platform has been designed to demonstrate the advantages of adaptive hybrid control approaches. Innovative micro hole machining with minimum burr formation by the use of newly developed micro compound tool

The study focuses on the efforts for minimization of burr formation and improvement of hole surface roughness in micro through-hole machining. It deals with the development of micro compound tool which is consisting of a micro flat drill as the drilling part and a micro diamond-electroplated-grinding part for hole finishing. The finishing diameters of each drilling and grinding parts of the fabricated micro compound tool are 90 μm and 100 μm, respectively. The study focuses mainly on the effect of drill point angle and ultrasonic vibration applied during micro hole machining to the hole entrance and exit burrs formation. The used workpiece is made of stainless steel (SUS304) with a thickness of 100 μm. From the experiment, it was found that the tool having drill point angle of 118° resulted in a smaller burr formation although hole machining was conducted for 600 holes. Furthermore, the application of ultrasonic vibration during hole machining could improve the performance of the developed micro compound tool and decreased the burr size, especially the exit burr. © 2012 The Society of Manufacturing Engineers.

Recently, a variety of robotic systems have been studied under the umbrella term of modular reconfigurable robotics [7,6]. Unlike conventional fixedmorphology robots, whose performance is usually confined by the operating environment and their own size, modular reconfigurable robots have the potential advantage of being able to change their morphology by rearranging the connectivity of their modular units [3]. This project investigates the development and improvement of a self-reconfigurable modular robot designed in previous work to study the emergence of robotic life-forms in a controllab.e physical environment [4]. The system contains 7 cm x 7 cm square robot units. Each unit is externally propelled and moves stochastically on an air table [2,1]. Each unit can establish, and break, up to four physical connections with other units by means of swiveling permanent magnets [4,1]. Connected units can communicate using infra-red transceivers. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

Many machine learning algorithms rely on feature descriptors to access information about image appearance. Using an appropriate descriptor is therefore crucial for the algorithm to succeed. Although domain- and task-specific feature descriptors may result in excellent performance, they currently have to be hand-crafted, a difficult and time-consuming process. In contrast, general-purpose descriptors (such as SIFT) are easy to apply and have proved successful for a variety of tasks, including classification, segmentation, and clustering. Unfortunately, most general-purpose feature descriptors are targeted at natural images and may perform poorly in document analysis tasks. In this paper, we propose a method for automatically learning feature descriptors tuned to a given image domain. The method works by first extracting the independent components of the images, and then building a descriptor by pooling these components over multiple overlapping regions. We test the proposed method on several document analysis tasks and several datasets, and show that it outperforms existing general-purpose feature descriptors. © 2012 IEEE.

Recently biosensors based on silicon nanowire field-effect transistors (SiNW-FETs) have drawn huge amounts of attention, due to their ultrasensitivity, selectivity, lab.l-free and real-time detection abilities. As people know more and more knowledge of the structure and function of nucleic acid molecules, DNA detection has gained importance increasingly. Here, we briefly summarize major fabrication methods in synthesising SiNW-FETs and selectively describe some applications of SiNW-FET biosensors in DNA detection over the past few years. Some key results from each article are summarized, involving the concept and mechanism behind each sensor, with the aim of stimulating more efforts in developing SiNW-FET biosensors for detecting DNA. © 2012 Crown Copyright.

Modern vehicles with semi-autonomous (driver-assistance systems) and autonomous capabilities require sophisticated on-board and off-board diagnostics for safe operation, and to reduce unnecessary component replacements at the service garage. We present a diagnostic approach that strategically fuses different sources of instrumentation availab.e in a time-triggered automotive network (Flex Ray) for vehicle control, and learns patterns or signatures of different faults. These patterns ease the classification of faults during runtime or in the service garage. We evaluate our approach through fault-injection experiments on an automotive test bench, and demonstrate that by fusing different sources of instrumentation we can diagnose protocol-level and physical faults with over 98% accuracy. We also show that our approach is applicable across different network topologies. © 2012 IEEE.

A two-level distributed state estimation method for substation-dispatch center is proposed. After zero impedance three-phase state estimation based on KCL has been applied in substation, up load ripe data are treated in dispatch center level and the single-phase state estimation for all grid implemented. The detailed discussions about the architecture, algorithm, ripe data transmission, time setting and period selection, transmission protocol and transition scheme for the method are given. The results of calculation example show that this method is in favor of simultaneously identifying three-phase bad data and topology error, reducing communication burden, and increasing the reliability of the dispatch center state estimation for all grid. © 2012 State Grid Electric Power Research Institute Press.
