Confronting conflicts and coping with them is part of social life, since conflicts seem to arise in almost every context and developmental stage of human life. The personal and collective gains that follow conflict resolution have motivated scholars across many research fields to advocate the use of pro-social mechanisms for resolution. The Siren serious game aims to support teachers' role to educate young people on how to resolve conflicts, by employing affect-aware, user- and cultural adaptivity to provide interesting and relevant conflict scenarios and resolution approaches. © 2012 IEEE.

A comprehensive rule based method for substation topology error identification

A substation topology error identification method based on comprehensive rules, including rules in different spatial scales such as element level, bay level and voltage level as well as rules in time sequence, is presented. Utilizing the superiority in multi-source, redundancy and rapid measurement in the substation, the multi spatial scale relevant rules of element, bay and voltage level as well as multi time sequence rules are proposed, and concrete implementation approach for such a method is given. The proposed method can improve the ability to identify the topology error, especially ability to identify switches without analog measurement, thus more reliable topological structure can be provided to control centre to improve the reliability of state estimation for the whole power system. Results of simulation and practical application show that the proposed method is effective.

Frequency dependent network equivalent based electromagnetic and electromechanical decoupled hybrid simulation

Neither electromechanical transient stability analysis (TSA) program nor electromagnetic transient (EMT) programs can be used individually for the transient stability studies of the large scale AC/DC systems. This paper presented an electromagnetic and electromechanical hybrid simulation system, based on a frequency dependent network equivalent. Firstly, the framework and the main modules of the proposed hybrid simulation system were introduced. Secondly, the methods to calculate the equivalents of the electromagnetic side and the electromechanical side were introduced. The discussion on the difference between the traditional method and frequency dependent network equivalent (FDNE) and the flowchart of the hybrid simulation were also given. In the last part of the paper, AC system and AC-DC hybrid system are both used as examples to demonstrate the accuracy of the proposed hybrid simulation system's simulation results. © 2012 Chinese Society for Electrical engineering.

Image segmentation based on trickle-up and trickle-down visual pathway in primate

To locate the object accurately in a scene for further vision processing, a novel bio-inspired model for image segmentation is proposed, which closely follows the computation of trickle-up and trickle-down processing in primate visual pathways. The trickle-up stage is a parallel modular structure consisting of three segmenting operators implementing the function as the parvocellular, magnocellular and koniocelluar pathways. The computation model of trickle-down path, predicts incoming stimuli based on the prior knowledge of the scenes. The proposed approach is applied to several segmentation experiments of clustering conditions, the results demonstrate that the performance of the proposed approach surpasses those achieved by previous top-down or bottom-up schemes on figure-ground segmentation. © 2011 by Binary Information Press.

Positive-sequence component based three-phase unbalanced power flow solution for distribution system with PV nodes

The traditional power flow methods aren't appropriate to the electrical distribution systems with distributed generators (DG). Therefore, a direct unbalanced three-phase power flow algorithm was presented in this paper. The proposed approach which was developed based on the path matrix, utilized the special topological structure of distribution systems and established the incident matrix of node voltages and injection currents. Based on the assumption that the positive-sequence voltage magnitudes of PV nodes are invariable, the relation of reactive power and compensation voltage for the PV nodes had been derived by the positivesequence component and path matrix. As a result, a new approach handling PV nodes of DG had been proposed and could be integrated into the proposed power flow method. It needn't introduce any additional active power at PV nodes and kept the positive-sequence voltage magnitudes on their scheduled values, considering that reactive power limits were not violated. The results of the 6-bus and the 69-bus test systems verified the validity and universality of the proposed methods. © 2012 Chin. Soc. for Elec. Eng.

This paper discusses period properties of some linear maps which are employed in various applications such as image encryption, public key cryptography and watermarking. Conditions for the bijectiveness of such maps and the existence of a period are presented. Period structure is also given. Then, the recurrence equation theory is adopted to address the period distribution problem. Finally, a framework to solve the problem is proposed with a demonstration of its effectiveness and efficiency into some applications.

In this paper, two synthesis approaches are proposed to stabilize the fractional order chaotic Lu system. In the first approach, the equilibrium point of the system is stabilized locally while the second approach is based on the Lyapunov technique which guarantees global asymptotically stability of the origin. Simulation results demonstrate validity and effectiveness of the proposed approaches.

In this paper, the problem of robust H∞ fuzzy observer-based tracking control for the uncertain T-S fuzzy systems with external disturbances is addressed. The robust stability synthesis is based on the descriptor redundancy approach. Linear matrix inequalities (LMIs) are proposed for the design of the observer-based controller. Less conservative design conditions are obtained using a multiple Lyapunov function approach. It is assumed that the derivatives of the grades of the fuzzy membership functions exist and have lower bounds. This assumption is not restrictive in many T-S fuzzy models. Unlike the previous design method for robust H∞ fuzzy observer-based tracking controller which needs four prescribed scalar variables, the proposed method in this paper gives strict linear matrix inequalities. Moreover, in order to cover a more general problem, it is assumed that there exist uncertainties in local system, input and output matrices simultaneously for the uncertain T-S fuzzy system. A numerical example is used to show the effectiveness of the proposed method. © 2011 IEEE.

The objective of this paper is to combine the composite nonlinear feedback and integral sliding mode strategies for fast and accurate robust tracking of a class of linear systems subject to uncertainties. In fact, the theory of integral sliding mode-based composite nonlinear feedback method is presented such that the resulting controlled output would track a target reference as fast as possible with small overshoot and without any steady state bias. The proposed control method retains the actual structure of composite nonlinear feedback controller in following the reference trajectory within a given accuracy and the invariance property of integral sliding mode method in rejecting disturbances and at the same time preserves the stability of the whole system. Also, a collection of nonlinear functions in different forms are studied to improve the reference tracking performance of the system. Simulation results show that the control law designed by this approach yields excellent performance. © 2011 IEEE.

A novel recursive singularity free FTSM (Fast Terminal Sliding Mode) strategy for finite time tracking control of nonholonomic systems is proposed. As a result, the singularity problem around the origin resulting from the fractional power of conventional terminal sliding mode is resolved. Simulation results are given for two benchmark examples of extended chained-form nonholonomic systems: a wheeled mobile robot and an underactuated surface vessel. The results show the effectiveness of the proposed strategy. © 2011 AACC American Automatic control Council.
