With high speed data sampling technology development, fault generated high-frequency signals can be got, in which fault generated traveling waves reflects fault location, fault type and faulted equipment so on from different ways of traditional power-frequency information. Fault generated traveling waves may help to improve protection relaying. The paper will review fault generated traveling waves and its physical base at first. Then two cases will be presented to exemplify the advantage of traveling waves based protection relaying. One is that fault generated traveling waves with the speed of light can be used to protect UHV long transmission lines independent of capacitive charging current. The other is traveling wave will be applied to detect single-phase-to-ground fault in power distribution system with neutral non-effectively grounded. At last the paper will conclude with implementation of traveling wave based protection relaying. © 2011 IEEE.

Travelling-wave starting element is an integral part of the ultra high-speed protection. Existing design method depends on engineering experience, low accuracy in travelling-wave signal recognition, easy to trip frequently or refuse to trip. To solve these problems, through mass of starting signal simulation and analysis under different fault conditions, this paper focuses on the travelling-wave starting element and figures out the travelling-wave identification method. This paper summarizes the frequency and voltage characteristics of travelling-wave head, puts forward a new method in real-time travelling-wave fault identification. In addition, the analysis course included in this paper is a useful attempt that can be used in similar fault travelling-wave analysis. © 2011 IEEE.

Power grid and communication network, which depends on each other to provide proper functionality, are becoming more and more coupled together. Failure of a fraction of nodes in communication networks may lead to a failure even a cascade of failures in power grid. Wide area protection is highly dependent on communication. The failure of communication in some part of wide area protection system will affect the realization of the function to prevent cascading outages and result in serious consequences. Based on Manchester, OPA and hidden failure cascading failure models and considered the feature of relay protection, an improved cascading failure model is established. Then it is used to analyze the dynamic process of communication fails in wide area protection system and IEEE 30 bus system is employed to demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed method. Results show that communication failure in protection system will accelerate the cascading outages of power grid. Effective solutions to reduce the communication risk are discussed. The work of this paper is availab.e for reference to analyze the process of cascading outages and design protection system preventing cascading outages. © 2011 IEEE.

How to rationally allocate the limited advertising budget is a critical issue in search auctions. However, due to the heterogeneousness of major search markets in terms of auction mechanisms, ranking algorithms and advertising structures, it is becoming increasingly difficult for an advertiser to manipulate advertising budget simultaneously across several search markets. In this paper, we establish a novel optimal budget allocation model across search advertising markets, under a finite time horizon. By considering distinctive features of search auctions, we introduce the quality score q and the dynamic advertising effort u to extend the advertising response function to fit budget decision scenarios. We also provide a feasible solution to our model and study some desirable properties: (a) the marginal return is non-increasing with respect to the advertising budget;(b) the optimal budget solution satisfies the condition that the advertising effort u is positively proportional to the product of the change of accumulated revenue in a market ∂V, the change of market share ∂ θ and the advertising elasticity α. Computational experiments are made to evaluate our model and identified properties. Experimental results show that the advertiser with increasing advertising elasticity is suggested to invest more budget in the late stages, but the advertiser with decreasing advertising elasticity should invest more budget in the initial stage, in order to maximize net profits.

In this paper, novel event-triggered strategies for the design of model predictive (MPC) controllers are presented. The MPC framework consists in finding the solution to a constraint optimal-control problem at every time-step. The case of triggering the optimization of the MPC only when is needed, is investigated. The centralized case is treated first and the results are then extended to a decentralized formulation. We consider a system composed by a number of interconnected subsystems, each one of them controlled by a robust MPC algorithm. Using the Input-to-State (ISS) property of the decentralized MPC controller we reach to an event-triggering rule, for each of the subsystems. © 2011 IFAC.

In this paper, a discontinuous projection-based output feedback adaptive robust learning control (OARLC) scheme is constructed for a class of nonlinear systems in a semi-strict feedback form by incorporating an observer and a dynamic normalization signal. Since only output signal is availab.e for measurement, an observer is firstly designed to provide exponentially convergent estimates of the unmeasurable states. Using certain known basis functions to capture the characteristics of unknown general periodic disturbances, the discontinuous projection type adaptation law can then be used to tune the amplitudes of those basis functions on-line to recover the unknown general periodic disturbances asymptotically. The estimation errors due to the unknown initial states, uncompensated disturbances, and the uncertain nonlinearities are also effectively dealt with via certain robust feedback at each step of the proposed OARLC backstepping design. The resulting controller achieves a guaranteed transient and a prescribed final tracking accuracy for output tracking performance. In addition, when the general periodic disturbances fall within the approximation ranges of the periodic basis functions, asymptotic output tracking performance is achieved as well. © 2011 IFAC.

In this paper, we describe how we integrated an artificial intelligence (AT) system into the PubMed search website using angmented browsing technology. Our system dynamically enriches the PubMed search results displayed in a user's browser with semantic annotation provided by several natural language processing (NLP) subsystems, including a sentence splitter, a part-of-speech tagger, a named entity recognizer, a section categorizer and a gene normalizer (GN). After our system is installed, the PubMed search results page is modified on the fly to categorize sections and provide additional information on gene and gene products identified by our NLP subsystems. In addition, GN involves three main steps: candidate ID matching, false positive filtering and disambiguation, which are highly dependent on each other. We propose a joint model using a Markov logic network (MLN) to model the dependencies found in GN. The experimental results show that our joint model outerforms a baseline system that executes the three steps separately. A new framework to design immersion and invariance adaptive controllers for nonlinearly parameterized, nonlinear systems was recently proposed by the authors. The key step is the construction of a monotone mapping, via a suitable selection of a controller tuning function, which has to satisfy some integrability conditions|this translates into the need to solve a partial differential equation (PDE). In this paper this result is extended providing some answers to the questions of characterization of "monotonizable" systems and solvability of the PDE. First, adding to the design a nonlinear dynamic scaling, we obviate the need to solve the PDE. Second, for the case of factorizable nonlinearities, the following results are established. (i) It is shown that the monotonicity condition is satisfied if a linear matrix inequality is feasible. (ii) Directly verifiable involutivity conditions that ensure the solution of the PDE are presented. (iii) An explicit formula for the required tuning function is given, provided the regressor matrix satisfies some rank conditions. Hence, adding a dynamic scaling, this yields a constructive solution to the problem. © 2011 IFAC.

The implementation of non-communication protection of double circuit line systems based on two independent relays has disadvantages like information shareless,complex connection and lack of economic. This paper researched the implementation of non-communication protection of double circuit line systems based on one relay - the integrated protection platform. Hardware structure of the integrated protection platform is described, and software flow of non-communication protection of double circuit line systems which implemented on the integrated protection platform is also described. Large number of RTDS experiments proved that, according to various asymmetrical fault and symmetrical fault, this protection scheme has reliable and sensitive action performance. It is proved that the implement non-communication protection of double circuit line systems based on the intergrated protection platform is feasible. © 2011 IEEE.

This article proposes a new approach to stability analysis of linear systems with sampled-data inputs. The method, based on a variation of the discrete-time Lyapunov approach, provides stability conditions using functional variables subject to convex constraints. These stability conditions can be solved using the sum of squares methodology with little or no conservatism in both the case of synchronous and asynchronous sampling. Numerical examples are included to show convergence. © 2011 IFAC.
