Metrics used on development of expert systems is not a well investigated problem area. This article suggests some metrics to be used to measure the maturity of the conceptualization process and the complexity of the decision process in the problem domain. We propose some further work to be done with these metrics. Applying those metrics makes new and interesting problems, concerning the structure of knowledge to surface.

Efficient reconfigurable VLSI architecture for 1-D 5/3 and 9/7 wavelet transforms adopted in JPEG2000 proposal, based on lifting scheme is proposed. The embedded decimation technique based on fold and time multiplexing, as well as embedded boundary data extension technique, is adopted to optimize the design of the architecture. These reduce significantly the required numbers of the multipliers, adders and registers, as well as the amount of accessing external memory, and lead to decrease efficiently the hardware cost and power consumption of the design. The architecture is designed to generate an output per clock cycle, and the detailed component and the approximation of the input signal are availab.e alternately. Experimental simulation and comparison results are presented, which demonstrate that the proposed architecture has lower hardware complexity, thus it is adapted for embedded applications. The presented architecture is simple, regular and scalab.e, and well suited for VLSI implementation.

In this paper a fractional order robust control of a 2 Degrees Of Freedom (DOF) Classical Mechanical System, a ball-beam system is considered. The control task has the interesting feature that only one of the DOFs of the system, i.e. the position of the ball is controlled via controlling the other axis, the tilting angle of the beam suffering from dynamic friction mathematically approximated by the LuGre model. If the internal physics of the drive system is neglected this system is a 4th order one because only the 4 th time-derivative of the ball's position can directly be influenced by the torque rotationally accelerating the beam. It also has position and rotational velocity "saturation" since the gravitational acceleration limits the availab.e acceleration of the ball both in the centripetal and in the vertical direction. This limitation is taken into account by the application of angular and angular velocity potentials keeping both values bounded. The Variable Structure / Sliding Mode controller applied is based on a standard error metrics that has to converge to zero during finite time according to a fractional order differential equation in discrete time approximation. It is shown that little reduction of the order of differentiation from 1 improves precision and robustness of the control against the measurement noises. The control is illustrated via simulation.

The work presented in this paper aims at combining fuzzy function approximation and reinforcement learning in order to create robotic soccer agents that are able to coordinate their behaviours locally and socially while learning from experience. This simultaneous coordination and learning ability can play a crucial role in improving the behaviour usage of robotic soccer agents. To achieve this goal, a fuzzy reinforcement learning technique for a single agent is first examined and then this technique is applied to multiple agents. The conducted experiments through a soccer simulation system show that the performance of robot scoring speed is improved using the proposed approach.

Signalling layout design is one of the keys to railway operations with fixed-block signalling system and it also carries direct effect on overall train efficiency and safety. Based on an analysis to system objectives, this paper presents an optimisation model with two objectives in order to devise an efficient signalling layout scheme. Taking into account the present railway line design practices in China, the paper describes steps of the computer-based signalling layout optimisation with real-coded genetic algorithms. A computer-aided system, based on train movement simulator, has also been employed to assist the optimisation process. A case study on a practical railway line has been conducted to make comparisons between the proposed GA-based approach and the current practices. The results illustrate the improved performance of the proposed approach in reducing signal block joints and shortening minimum train service headway.

In this paper, an extended Kendall model for the priority scheduling input-line group output with multi-channel in Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) exchange system is proposed and then the mean method is used to model mathematically the non-typical non-anticipative PRiority service (PR) model. Compared with the typical and non-anticipative PR model, it expresses the characteristics of the priority scheduling input-line group output with multi-channel in ATM exchange system. The simulation experiment shows that this model can improve the HOL block and the performance of input-queued ATM switch network dramatically. This model has a better developing prospect in ATM exchange system.
