No. 3 hot strip mill in Chiba Works of Kawasaki Steel started its operation in May 1995. The mill meets the strict quality requirements of customers in recent years and expands the product size of stainless steel. The dimensional and surface quality of stainless steel at No. 3 hot strip mill further advanced by introducing highly accurate and high-response thickness gauge control, set-up and dynamic control for optimizing crown and flatness at pair cross mill, equipped with on-line roll grinder, and edge-seam control. (1) Product size of hard steel strips such as stainless steel has been expanded and high accuracy in longitudinal thickness has been achieved over the full length of hot rolled strips. (2) Low crown of stainless steel has been able to be obtained by developing highly accurate crown and flatness control. (3) Reduction of the edge-seam defects of stainless steel has been developed by using the sizing press.

This work presents a novel framework based on a discriminative auditory feature extractor for speaker recognition over VoIP network. The auditory model that simulates the mid-external and inner ear is incorporated into the conventional Mel Frequency Cepstral Coefficients (MFCC) scheme to produce new parameters that we named Ear Frequency Cepstral Coefficients (EFCCs). The experiments are conducted on the TIMIT corpus and the EFCC, used as input parameters tothe i-vector algorithm. Results showed interesting performances compared to the conventional MFCC parameters. In addition, this improvement was obtained by using fewer parameters (43 EFCCs vs 60 MFCCs) in our experiment.

This paper describes the state-of-the-art ultrasonic and magnetic measuring techniques developed at Kawasaki Steel and used in the production proc.ss of steel sheets. Some examples shown here are as follows: (1) Magnetic flux leakage testing system for the detection of nonmetallic inclusions, (2) Nondestructive orientation measurement for secondary re-crystallized grains in grain-oriented electrical steel by ultrasonic interferometry, (3) Immersion testing method for the detection of nonmetallic inclusion, and (4) Surface wave probe for the detection of surface flaws in rolls used in rolling mills. The development of these techniques and their applications to actual steel sheets production proc.sses have contributed to advances in quality assurance and control. By means of these techniques, steel sheet products with advanced and uniform properties are being continuously produced to meet customers' needs.

Kawasaki Steel has been making efforts to develop new hot-rolled steel products by using fully continuous rolling technology, so-called `endless rolling', at No. 3 hot strip mill of Chiba Works. Stable rolling technology of ultra-thin hot rolled strips such as 1.0 mm, 0.9 mm, and 0.8 mm in thickness has been established, and the conventional minimum gauge of hot rolled strips (1.2 mm) has been lowered. The ultra-thin hot rolled strips have been provided to the market with a brand name `RTHC' (River thin hot coil commercial grade) since 1977. The ultra-thin hot rolled strips have excellent quality in dimensional accuracy and mechanical properties. In addition, the ultra-thin hot rolled strips meet current needs of energy saving and reducing CO2 emission. New market and more demands for the newly developed product strips are expected.

Kawasaki Steel started the operation of the No. 3 hot strip mill at its Chiba Works in May 1995. This is the first fully continuous hot strip mill in the world. To satisfy customer demands for the improvement of product qualities, the mill has the following features: (1) A high skid button was installed in reheating furnace to remove skid marks. (2) High speed proc.ssing, hydraulic edgers and long side guides were introduced in rougher mill. (3) A pair cross mill, a hydraulic screw down, an AC motor-drive and a low inertia looper were installed in finisher mill. (4) Subdivided control valves were installed in water cooling zone. These arrangements are controlled precisely and thus, improved product accuracy in strip gauge, crown and width and the quality of the material.
