In recent years, methods from network science are gaining rapidly interest in economics and finance. A reason for this is that in a globalized world the interconnectedness among economic and financial entities are crucial to understand and networks provide a natural framework for representing and studying such systems. In this paper, we are surveying the use of networks and network-based methods for studying economy related questions. We start with a brief overview of graph theory and basic definitions. Then we discuss descriptive network measures and network complexity measures for quantifying structural properties of economic networks. Steam turbine fault diagnosis is a significant issue in fault diagnosis technology, which has made remarkable progress in the area of electromechanical engineering. Although many studies based on fuzzy approaches are developed on this topic, they can only cope with incomplete and uncertain information, but have limitations in processing indeterminate and inconsistent information in practical decision-making procedures. In addition, it is beneficial to solve problems under group decision-making background that aims to aggregate each expert's preference to reach a final conclusion by consensus and unanimity. To deal with these difficulties in steam turbine fault diagnosis, by combining multigranulation rough sets over two universes with single-valued neutrosophic sets theories, a single-valued neutrosophic multigranulation rough set over two universes is investigated in this paper. Then, we construct a general decision-making rule through using single-valued neutrosophic multigranulation rough sets over two universes within the background of steam turbine fault diagnosis. Finally, the validity of the decision-making method is verified by an illustrative case. © 2016 - IOS Press and the authors. All rights reserved.

In this paper, we propose a new texture descriptor, completed local derivative pattern (CLDP). In contrast to completed local binary pattern (CLBP), which involves only local differences at each scale, CLDP encodes the directional variation of the local differences of two scales as a complementary component to local patterns in CLBP. The new component in CLDP, with regarded as the directional derivative pattern, reflects the directional smoothness of local textures without increasing computation complexity. Experimental results on the Outex database show that CLDP, as a uni-scale pattern, outperforms uni-scale state-of-the-art texture descriptors on texture classification and has comparable performance with multi-scale texture descriptors.

A Study of Statistical Machine Translation Methods for Under Resourced Languages

This paper contributes an empirical study of the application of ﬁve state-of-the-art machine translation to the trans- lation of low-resource languages. The methods studied were phrase-based, hierarchical phrase-based, the operational sequence model, string-to-tree, tree-to-string statistical machine translation methods between English (en) and the under resourced languages Lao (la), Myanmar (mm), Thai (th) in both directions. The performance of the machine translation systems was automatically measured in terms of BLEU and RIBES for all experiments. Our main ﬁndings were that the phrase-based SMT method generally gave the highest BLEU scores. This was counter to expectations, and we believe indicates that this method may be more robust to limitations on the data set size. However, when evaluated with RIBES, the best scores came from methods other than phrase-based SMT, indicating that the other methods were able to handle the word re-ordering better even under the constraint of limited data. Our study achieved the highest reported results on the data sets for all translation language pairs.

The accuracy of the Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) navigation system determines whether they can safely operate and return. Traditional Dead-reckoning (DR) relies on the inertial sensors such as gyroscope and accelerometer. A major challenge for DR navigation is from measurement error of the inertial sensors (gyroscope, accelerometer, etc.), especially when the AUV is near or at the ocean surface. The AUV's motion is affected by ocean waves, and its pitch angle changes rapidly with the waves. This rapid change and the measurement errors will cause great noise to the direction measured by gyroscopes, and then lead to a large error to the DR navigation. To address this problem, a novel DR method based on neural network (DR-N) is proposed to explore the time-varying relationship between acceleration measurement and orientation measurement, which leverages acoustic localization and neural network estimate timely pitch angle through the explored time-varying relationship. This method enables AUV's DR navigation with a single acceleration, without relying on both acceleration and gyroscope. Most importantly, we can improve the accuracy of AUV navigation through avoiding DR errors caused by gyroscope noise at the sea surface. Simulations show DR-N significantly improves navigation accuracy.

Automatic categorization of bioscience literature containing QTL information

In this paper we introduce text categorization methods to address the classification problem of literature containing Quantitative Trait Locus, QTL information. Our work focused on building an automatic categorization system targeting the QTL information of various species based on Support Vector Machines, SVM. A text representation strategy is proposed combining words and phrases that effectively improve the classification accuracy. Through studying literature containing QTL information and other species-related publications, we determined representative phrases and detected abbreviations in order to form another set of features. Together with the words selected by Chi value, the two sets of features were both used to represent text samples. We employed a portion of particular species’ QTL-related literature data to conduct an experiment regarding the system’s construction, and then tested our system using the data of multiple plants and species. The experiment results indicate that our work may help further research on constructing QTL information databases. © 2016, UK Simulation Society. All rights reserved.

This work presents a new array geometry, which is capable of providing O(M~2N~2) degrees of freedom (DOF) using only MN physical sensors via utilizing the second-order statistics of the received data. This new array is composed of multiple, identical minimum redundancy subarrays, whose positions follow a minimum redundancy configuration. Thus the new array is a minimum redundancy array (MRA) of MRA subarrays, and is termed as nested MRA. The sensor positions, aperture length, and the number of DOF of the new array can be predicted if these parameters of MRA subarrays are given. Numerical simulations demonstrate the superiorities of the proposed array geometry in resolving more sources than sensors and DOA estimation.

In this paper, we propose a sampling approach of reference points used for performance metrics of multi-objective evolutionary algorithms. Traditional reference point sampling methods, such as the Das and Dennis method, usually sample the reference points via a set of uniformly distributed weight vectors generated on an ideal hyper-plane in objective space, which however often ignore the geometric shape of a specific Pareto front. Therefore, we propose a novel reference point sampling approach by taking the specific shape of the Pareto optimal front to be tackled into account for measuring the performance of multi-objective evolutionary algorithms. The performance of the proposed reference point sampling method against the other two state-of-the-art sampling methods is tested on six test instances in various conditions, which clearly demonstrate the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed sampling method.

Despite numerous recent efforts, 3D object retrieval based on partial shape queries remains a challenging problem, far from being solved. The problem can be defined as: given a partial view of a shape as query, retrieve all partially similar 3D models from a repository. The objective of this track is to evaluate the performance of partial 3D object retrieval methods, for partial shape queries of various scan qualities and degrees of partiality. The retrieval problem is often found in cultural heritage applications, for which partial scans of objects query a dataset of geometrically distinct classes. © 2016 The Eurographics Association.

In this paper, a novel blocking artifacts reduction algorithm for low-bit-rate compressed images is proposed. The proposed algorithm adaptively adjusts Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT) coefficients of the shifted blocks to remove the significant blocking artifacts. Then, the bilateral filter is introduced to smooth the subject DCT blocks. The subject DCT block is predicted via the weighted average of overlapping neighboring blocks in DCT domain. The weights are determined according to both the similarity between the subject coded block and the spatial distance of the overlapped neighboring blocks. Image fidelity has been further improved via a quantization constraint. Experimental results illustrated that the proposed method achieves better results in both subjective and objective quality.
