In LTE uplink systems, single-carrier frequency-division multiple access (SC-FDMA) has been employed. In SCFDMA, orthogonal frequency resources are assigned to different users to avoid intra-cell interference. However, inter-cell interference (ICI) caused by the users in neighboring cells significantly deteriorates the performance. Cooperation among base stations must be used to deal with ICI for multi-cell systems. In this paper, we investigate multi-cell scheduling in SC-FDMA for LTE uplink. We propose a novel cooperative scheduling algorithm that takes inter-cluster and intra-cluster interference into account. We first perform coordinated scheduling and then link adaptation to select modulation and coding scheme (MCS). Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm has significant gains over the single-cell proportional fair (PF) scheduling algorithm on both cell-edge and average throughput. It also outperforms the existing cooperative algorithm under full pathloss compensation and fractional open-loop power control (OLPC).
In this paper, we review and propose an improvement on an earlier proposed distributed delay and sum beamformer (DDSB). In the original DDSB, each pair of neighboring nodes updates their estimates asynchronously, whic...

The generic REMOS (Reverberation Modeling for robust Speech recognition) concept is extended in this contribution to cope with additional noise components. REMOS originally embeds an explicit reverberation model into a hidden Markov model (HMM) leading to a relaxed conditional independence assumption for the observed feature vectors. During recognition, a nonlinear optimization problem is to be solved in order to adapt the HMMs' output probability density functions to the current reverberation conditions. The extension for additional noise components necessitates a modified numerical solver for the nonlinear optimization problem. We propose an approximation scheme based on continuous piecewise linear regression. Connected-digit recognition experiments demonstrate the potential of REMOS in reverberant and noisy environments. They furthermore reveal that the benefit of an explicit reverberation model, overcoming the conditional independence assumption, increases with increasing signal-to-noise-ratios.

In real world facial expression recognition (FER) applications, it is not practical for a user to enroll his/her facial expressions under different pose angles. Therefore, a desirable property of a FER system would be to allow the user to enroll his/her facial expressions under a single pose, for example frontal, and be able to recognize them under different pose angles. In this paper, we address this problem and present a method to recognize six prototypic facial expressions of an individual across different pose angles. We use Partial Least Squares to map the expressions from different poses into a common subspace, in which covariance between them is maximized. We show that PLS can be effectively used for facial expression recognition across poses by training on coupled expressions of the same identity from two different poses. This way of training lets the learned bases model the differences between expressions of different poses by excluding the effect of the identity. We have evaluated the proposed approach on the BU3DFE database and shown that it is possible to successfully recognize expressions of an individual from arbitrary viewpoints by only having his/her expressions from a single pose, for example frontal pose as the most practical case. Overall, we achieved an average recognition rate of 87.6% when using frontal images as gallery and 86.6% when considering all pose pairs.
