A new methodology for perceptual quality measure is presented. The new method defines the bark coherence function (BCF) as a new cognition module. False prediction errors are occasionally observed in previously developed perceptual measures when they are applied to the end-to-end speech quality measurement of communication systems. Those errors are mainly caused by the linear distortion of the analogue interface of the system being evaluated. The BCF itself normalizes those effects of linear filtering, so that it is ideal for the speech quality assessment of mobile communication systems. In addition, the proposed scheme does not require the local as well as global scaling, so that it is robust to the difference between the original and received speech levels. To evaluate the performance of the new perceptual model, the regression analysis was performed with CDMA digital cellular, CDMA personal communication service (PCS) and speech codec's. The correlation coefficients computed using the BCF showed noticeable improvements over the PSQM that is recommended by ITU-T. Robustness of the BCF to various conditions was also tested.

The segmentation of a signal based on a piecewise polynomial model is reexamined here in light of the recent advances in applying the MDL principle to the exponential density family. The critical case of discriminating between short segments is handled very efficiently by using the exact MDL formula for small sample size, whereas MAP or AIC methods result in drastic over-segmentation. The simulation result for ECG segmentation shows that the piecewise linear approximation obtained with the proposed method preserves well the location of the QRS complex.

The electric guitar has been developed to withstand electric amplification and utilize (mostly analog) signalprocessing in order to create a multitude of timbres and sound types. Sometimes it would be desirable to play the same electric guitar, yet with a sound that resembles a good acoustic guitar or some other member of the plucked string instrument family. In this study we have investigated DSP techniques that can be used to shape the magnetic pickup output of the electric guitar to simulate acoustic instruments. This includes linear filtering for body simulation, time-varying modulation to generate beating of the harmonic components, and techniques to simulate the general temporal envelope of the plucked notes.

This paper describes an efficient algorithm for the design of multiplierless approximately linear-phase lattice wave digital (LWD) filters (parallel connection of two all-pass filters). The coefficient optimization is performed in two basic steps. First, a nonlinear optimization algorithm is used for determining a parameter space of the finite-precision coefficients including the feasible space where the filter meets the given amplitude and phase specifications. The second step involves finding the filter parameters in this space such that the resulting filter meets the given criteria with the simplest coefficient representation forms. The proposed algorithm guarantees that the optimum multiplierless finite-wordlength solution can be found. This is illustrated by means of an example.
