Considering reinforcement pad and the cylindrical shell as an integral model and a contact model, stress analysis for opening-reinforcement structures of a cylindrical shell is performed by elastic and elastoplastic FEM. By comparison of two sub-models and two material constitutive relations (elastic and elastoplastic), the stress distribution of cylindrical shell intersections by the contact model is similar to that by the integral model, but there are some differences of the stress at contact surfaces of the shell and the reinforcement pad between by the contact model and by the integral model. In general, the stress analysis of the integral model for pad reinforcement can approximately represent that of the contact model. Finite element analyses for different nozzle diameters and different oblique angles in nozzle and cylinder shell intersections are carried out. The stress distribution and the maximum stress are affected by oblique angle. But the difference of the maximum stress intensity among different diameters is small. Copyright © 2007 by ASME.

An improved single odor/gas source searching approach using a mobile robot by combining image recognition in complex environments is presented. First, color image segmentation of prospective visual candidates is achieved using support vector machines (SVM). Second, the features of those candidates, such as color, shape and orientation (the posture of the object) are extracted. Third, the robot finds a salient object according to the characteristics of analysis areas. Last, the robot moves towards the object which is the most likely to be an odor/gas source. The robot moves upwind if gas concentration is detected. Otherwise, the robot moves along the new direction obtained from the further analysis. Experimental results show the efficiency and practicality of the approach for localizing a leaking ethanol bottle in complex indoor environments.

Hailstone is one of the main meteorological disasters and it is very difficult to be forecasted effectively. A novel method of automatic recognition hail cloud is proposed base on association rules in this paper. Firstly, the method preprocesses the original reflectivity image. Then the color features and texture features are extracted from the radar echo image. Lastly, the association rules, which are used to distinguish hailstorm from rainstorm and super refract, are constructed, namely hail echo ensemble forecast model based on image mining is constructed. The results show that hail echo ensemble forecast model based on image mining has higher accuracy compared with the PUP products.

This paper addresses the problem of estimating the odor path which is most likely taken by the odor patch detected by the concentration sensor on a mobile robot moving in an indoor dynamic airflow environment. The odor path estimation is useful for plume tracing and odor source declaration. A novel algorithm for odor path likelihood mapping in the dynamic airflow environment is proposed. The algorithm has a low computation cost by importing the idea of dynamic window approach. Experiments are carried out on the mobile robot in which odor concentration sensor, airflow sensor, encoder and compass are equipped. To extract useable concentration information from the odor sensor, a practicable data preprocessing method is put forward. The experiment results in the indoor dynamic airflow environment show that the odor path can be well estimated online.

This note deals with the delay-dependent stability and stabilization of linear system with state and input delays. Firstly, for the nominal system, by introducing the augmented Lyapunov functional and some free-weighting matrices, new delay-dependent stability and stabilization criteria of the system are presented. Then, these new conditions are extended to handle norm-bounded uncertain systems with state and input delays, which show less conservativeness. Numerical examples are given to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed results.

This paper studies the robust stabilization problem for linear continuous-time systems with time-delay that are composed of polytopic uncertain subsystems. The approach followed in this note aims at the existence of common positive definite matrices for all convex combinations of the extreme points which belong to different subsystem matrices to check robust stability of the switched system. The stability condition of delay-dependent is analyzed by a new bounding method and is given in terms of bilinear matrix inequalities (BMI). Based on the obtained result, we also design the switching rule by the obtained common positive definite matrices.

The delay-dependent H ∞ control for switched systems with time-delay is discussed in this paper. Based on linear matrix inequalities (LMI), a new delay-dependent condition is then derived by employing Lyapunov-Razumikhin functional method, which can ensure that the switched system is asymptotically stable with a prescribed H infin performance. Moreover, a switching state feedback strategy is proposed to solve the H ∞ control problem for the linear switched systems. By state feedback, we mean that the switchings among subsystems are dependent on system states. Finally, a simulation example is given to illustrate the validity of the result.

This note deals with the absolute stability of Lur'e control systems with time-varying delay. An augmented Lyapunov functional is introduced to establish some new stability criteria. First, for the nominal system, we develop some new stability conditions, by considering the additional useful terms and introducing some free-weighting matrices. In the proof of our results, we introduce some useful lemmas which have shown better effectiveness. Then, these new criteria are extended to the robust stability for uncertain systems with norm-bounded or polytopic-type uncertainties. The time-invariant and rate-independent delay criteria are obtained as some additional corollaries. Numerical examples show that the results obtained in this note improve the estimation of the stability limit over the existing ones.

Aiming at the difficulty of designing weighting matrices for linear quadratic regulator (LQR), a multi-objective evolution algorithm (MOEA) based approach is proposed. The LQR weighting matrices, state feedback control rate and optimal controller are obtained by means of establishing the multi-objective optimization model of LQR weighting matrices and applying MOEA to it, which makes control system meet multiple performance indexes simultaneously. controller of double inverted pendulum system is designed using the proposed approach. Simulation results show that it has shorter adjusting time, smaller amplitude value deviating from steady-state than the pole assignment LQR weighting matrices design approach. So the validity of the proposed approach is confirmed.
